A PSA as we hit band camp season
Please make sure you take care of yourself - band camp is intense even for everyone, whether your band is competitive or not.
Make sure youโre hydrating all day every day - donโt leave for camp without drinking a couple glasses of water, and keep drinking water all day.ย
If you start the day hydrated, youโre A LOT less likely to get crazy thirsty throughout the day, and youโll just need to maintain your hydration rather than try to establish it while youโre sweating buckets.
Since weโre headed into band camp season againโฆ
Another year, another band camp season (yes, I know I'm late this year).

Do the work
Hey everyone - your friendly color guard instructor blogger here.
To all of you still performing, I want to say a few things that boil down to three words. Do. The. Work. It isnโt your instructorโs job to make you successful. Itโs their job to give you the tools to be successful. It is your job to do the work and use those tools to make yourself successful.
When your instructor gives you a correction, itโs a compliment - theyโre sayingย โI know you can do this correctly.โ When they sayย โagain,โ theyโre giving you a chance to lock in the things that are correct and to fix your mistakes.ย
That being said - if they give you a chance to show them you can be better, take it. That opportunity is a gift because they know you can do better, and theyโre allowing you to show it. In theory, we all want to do our best - nobody wants to do poorly. So please take every opportunity to be the best you can be. We love seeing you succeed.

I miss Ancora so much.
Missing Rehearsal
So, my BIGGEST pet peeve when it comes to coaching is when kids minimize the impact that missing rehearsal (or part of rehearsal) will have.
Believe me, I do get the fact that stuff comes up. But hereโs the thing: you not being there is a PROBLEM.
In some cases, yes, the problem of you being there may be bigger than the problem of you being absent. If youโve got a contagious flu bug, please donโt bring it and share it. But understand that itโs still a problem that youโre not there. If you absolutely MUST study for a midterm because you didnโt manage your time well and you wonโt be able to spin if you fail, itโs obviously preferable that you pass the midterm and continue to be able to spin. BUT UNDERSTAND THAT ITโS STILL A PROBLEM THAT YOUโRE NOT THERE. (And please, learn from the experience so it never happens again - learn to manage your time so youโre not cramming the night before the midterm).
The absence of one person sets everyone else behind. No matter what, you will have to be taught what you miss and that delays learning other things. Your hole in the drill throws off those around you and when you return and are reinserted into the drill, your presence may cause issues that couldnโt be seen before because you werenโt there. Your designer canโt see what effect is happening because thereโs a hole. Your absence doesnโt just affect what you know - it affects EVERYONE involved - staff and students alike.
If you MUST miss a rehearsal/part of a rehearsal, you should NEVER sayย โItโs just one rehearsalโ orย โItโs just one hour,โ because itโs more than that. It affects every facet of the show for the rest of the season. It throws off plans that have been in place from before the season began. It can negate hours of work on the staffโs part.
If you MUST miss a rehearsal/part of a rehearsal, understand that itโs a problem and that there will be consequences. If there are consequences laid out by your teamโs handbook/rules/bylaws (not allowed to perform, solos/features given to others, etc.), accept them gracefully. Donโt get defensive, because you should have known these consequences were a thing already.ย
Work harder to make up for what youโve missed. Make sure it doesnโt happen again.
Guard means family and family means bitch you better know your counts cause I will not have my work watered down got that?
Why do we spin? To change lives <3 spread your talent, spread your joy. Make the world a better place. Love, @youdeservehappiness
Doesn't really need an answer, but it's a nice sentiment :-)

Hi! I'm kinda new to the color guard world. I did my first year of marching band this year, so I've only had one year of actual color guard experience. I did really well though, and during the entire marching band season I was dreaming of being in a winter guard. I finally found one that is the closest possible (it's a half hour away) and a couple girls from my marching band color guard are joining. The thing is, my parents aren't sure about me joining. Any ways that I can convince them? (:
It depends on what their concerns are - are they worried about the distance? the cost? the impact on your school work? etc. The distance can be an issue (although, compared to the distance many travel for independent units, half an hour is pretty good - I know people who drive/drove 2+ hours one way). Money can DEFINITELY be an issue - the activity isnโt cheap.
I would suggest figuring out what the issues they have are and presenting solutions. Carpooling with other girls if itโs a matter of not being sure they can get you there, coming up with ways to fundraise the money needed (check with the unit - they might already have fundraisers planned that can help you offset the cost), figuring out when youโll get homework done if youโre at rehearsal all the time, etc. Showing your parents that youโve thought about how to make it work and come up with viable solutions is probably the best way to convince them to let you spin.
Hope that helps - let me know if thereโs anything else I can help with!
I'm from Michigan as well! I spin for a D1 school and I'm in a collegiate winterguard (:
Well that narrows it down to 2 schools, since the other two D1 schools with winterguards have an A or Open class guardI used to spin at one of those schools and live nearish to the other :-)
