Cost of Knowing Sketchbook pages
Sketchbook pages for figuring out the game. I glad I did these pages at the beginning of the project as when I started to make assets it was good to refer back to the sketch book for ideas. Some o the stuff that I may have dismissed in ideation I ended up using as ideas for other areas (eg. a border that didn't work for the cards I used a similar design for the card lock) .
Mainly used it to get a feel for the style (wanted a nordic folk art/alchemy/with some element of whimsy kind of feel, and wanted to deviate away from the traditional mystic in a tent direction for fortune tellers. I also did some ideation for tarot card borders and the icons. I tried to do some for the characters, but it was so late in the jam for the characters, I ended up just clutching a fashion book and winging the character designs
I wish there was more time to give then more iterations. I felt that the character from the past had better poses - I took those from illustrations in the fashion book, while the modern characters had stances are more online references - I do think they work for their time periods. Dr.Logic was changed from a man to a older woman. I think she balances out the cast much better as otherwise I felt, as a man, he would have shared too similar energy to Ethan Li the entrepreneur or Lord Alderic. This way I think all six characters have a more unique identity. It was also a relief that the sketchy style worked with the rest of the game.
One thing I would do for the next game jam would be to think about UI/UX a lot earlier or suggest bringing in someone dedicated to that on board. For Flavedo, the coder the UI/UX takes the longest to plan out, while updating images is a quick job. For myself, making the images take the longest, while making windows and text boxes is relatively quick. I think the process would have been smoother if I had thought about UI earlier and got that completed first so not to delay flavedo. The other issue is font - I didn't expect that to be that much of a problem, but it's one of these things I find quite difficult to decide on if I didn't had a picture of how everything is going to look. In addition many of the free fonts online might have broken elements like a hypen that doesn't work - this would have been better tested earlier so there was more time to find a replacement.
ScreamJam 2025 - "Cost of Knowing"
First gamejam ina long time, it was a whirlwind. Most of the characters and art was completed within a weekend.
Carried on with the layout from the rough flavedo had programmed into unity. We went for a standard card game layout. I had suggested moving cards to the side as it would have provided more space for information, but I think it was a little late and time was a factor. It would have taken flavedo some effort to change they layout at that point in time and we already had don testing with the original layout. We also decided to keep it black and white for simplicity - although later on there had been some difficulty balancing those two colours (making sure there isn't any overlap or cards merging into the table 0 like what had been going on with the tests)
The end result was the above. I think the colour scheme worked overall. The cards looked nicer than expected - they were the last things I made, and it was quite a rush even if they were simple designs. They were loosely based on tarot cards. Originally I was thinking we could have used an original deck, and had the tarot names as placeholders. In the end it was more straightforward to make the card pictures based on placeholder names. I tried to simplify them as much as possible to keep. My favourite one is the magician - it had the infinity symbol that is synonymous with the original tarot cards with a bird which I felt was associated with magicians (doves in magic tricks, freedom etc). For most of these cards I tried to keep some aspect or association with the original tarot so that they are at least be loosely recognisable.
basic mood board - going with an occult/alchemy flavour
test game by Flavedo. Basic gameplay is to adjust stats by flipping two of the cards for the customer.

2025
A lot has happened this year. I returned to a community college (BCot) for a course on Game Art and Design - I think ideally I'd like to be there for one year. So far, I think the best thing about this experience is seeing how open all the others are with their ideas, and how they can talk without overthinking if an idea is good or not - openly discuss their interests without mortifying self-consciousness
Day 1 - Scream Jam 2025
Calling this my first official day of ScreamJam. Thought it would be good to add a game to my portfolio, and also have something to stand on for GlobalJam 2026. It could be something I can talk about in the GDL meetings, as well as the course I'm on. I went looking for a team on the 21st Sept. And thought I had one complete with T-- and Flavedo. We had a discord server for a short while, but there was a lot of trouble deciding on gameplay. There might have been disagreements based on communication style, so it resulted in just Flavedo and me. We are going to work on a card based game, where you play as a fortune teller. I'm now in the position where I'm the lead artist. ngl It's kinda scary, I've never carried a project like this with another person. Let's see how it goes, as my tutor Peter as said - the important thing is to walk the walk. I've always wanted to lead a art design project like this, and have been given many opportunities in the past. I think the difference this time is I will grab it by the horns and make something cool!
