BBC Radio 5 live
This speech-based radio show covers both news and sport. Music is used to introduce which radio station you’re listening too. The music is high-pitched and light/not loud therefore it dosen’t distract you from what they’re saying in the background. The introduction music is used to add a familiar house style to the station.
A voice over is used to add clarity to the listeners, for example in the extract I listened to I heard someone translating what a foreign reporter was saying into English. This enables listeners to hear about foreign affairs in a clearer way. This is of interest to the target listeners because when people tune into radio 5 they expect to hear current news and talks about that. Another example of a voice over is getting the head of the LGBT group point of view from a previous recording to give a second view point on the Elton John Vs dolce and gabbana incident.

Representations h/w
Ethnicity: The Ethnicity Theory states that race is a social category and is one of other factors that determine ethnicity. Some other criteria include: religion, language, nationality, and political identification.
The Alvarado theory (1987) is the idea that in media race is represented in 4 ways: Pitied, exotic, humorous and dangerous. This theory could apply to Nicki Minajs ‘Anaconda’ video as she and others of the same race are shown to be wearing little clothing that show off their bodies. They are being represented as exotic.
Tokenism is where a minority race is shown to be included as the ‘token’ character. For example in Friends, Charlie was the only black character in an all white cast. The producers may only of included her to show that they weren't discriminating.
Age: The Hypodermic Needle Theory can be applied to age, for example in the ‘McDonald's advert’ both an elderly man and young boys are presented. At the end the advert says ‘We all have McDonalds.’ To a passive audience the media may influence or ‘inject’ them with the idea that regardless of age everyone can enjoy the same thing.
Gender: Laura Mulveys’s ‘The Male Gaze Theory’ is the idea that in Hollywood males dominate film. The women in the films are just objects used whereas males move the narrative along. For example, In James Bond ‘Skyfall’ Miss Moneypenny shoots him accidentally showing that women aren't as skilled with weapons, also the character who Bond forms a romantic attachment with gets killed off.
Ariel Levy beliefs that woman also objectify themselves. In Robin Thickes’ music video for ‘Blurred lines’ the women in it are wearing very little to nothing at all in the explicit version whereas the men are all wearing suits and coming across as dressed smartly. The women take on a passive role in this music video.

Regional representation
Birmingham- In Jimmy Carr’s ‘ regional accents of the UK’ he represents Birmingham as being uneducated. This can be backed up as slightly accurate because of the show ‘Benefit’s street.’ Which is set in rural Birmingham. (this doesn't represent everyone from Birmingham, only a minority.)
Radio
i was listening to 'Heart.'
It played mostly pop music from different eras, it had radio presenters (a man and a woman). There was also a lot of advertisements which is a convention of the radio. The adverts appealed to regional events.
