Though not expected by me, it was refreshing to see America move forward in the cause of equal rights. Now the Supreme Court stands poised to deny civil liberties previously extended to gay folk, and move America backward instead of forward. At the time it was my opinion that America was not ready for same-sex marriage, and it appears I was right. 

Such a move, while being arbitrary and unjust, would send a message to society at large resulting in widespread discrimination with impunity, harassment and violence against gay and trans folk. The word ‘threat’ hardly approximates the real effect of such an action. The stink of bigotry is being demonstrated by U.S. Supreme Court justices, who are placing ordinary Americans at risk of all manner of injury and even death. The court has ruled in favor of same-sex marriage, and overturning the measure would be disastrous in terms of the safety and well-being of gay and trans Americans. This would not simply be a change in the law, it would encourage discrimination and violence.
