Special Interview: Sont Les Bienvenues, Justice!
Interview with BLING Magazine / February 2012
(Note: I took an interest in this interview because it gives me an opportunity to explain a few Korea-specific things about Justice and the things they’ve mentioned. Here’s the interview and I’ll add some notes as a different post. This interview was uploaded originally by @yeraming (original post here) and I was going to stick the translation there but it was going to get really long and messy so here it is instead, with credit.)
When one initiates an interview with an artist during a festival, one can’t help but feel a little like one has become a member of the paparazzi. Interview schedules and times may be set, but circumstances always make it so that there’s never enough time. We expected this and gave ourselves plenty of time to head over to the waiting room; after ten or so minutes, with less than an hour to go before they were due on stage, we were able to meet Justice in advance. The interview began with us showing them a picture that was taken of us at the afterparty of Summer Sonic Rock Festival last year:
(Showing a picture on an iPhone) This was taken last summer! Do you remember? Mm. We’re sorry, we’re not sure. But please don’t worry. It’s not that we just don’t remember this precise occasion, the whole half-day we were in such a daze. (Laughter)
When Justice first came to South Korea, Club ANSWER was filled to bursting point. Were you surprised? Immensely so! We had no idea an Asian country that wasn’t Japan would greet us like that. Everywhere but the DJ-booth was full. It was our first time being here and yet everyone knew who we were - it was really surprising.
You were amazing during Global Gathering Korea as well. Do you remember that time? Ah yes! It was incredible, we made so many friends there - we don’t know where they might have all gone, but we’re sure they’ll come to see us today. Someone there gave us a military jacket as a gift [TRANSLATOR’S NOTE: I’ve explained this incident in this post] and we took turns wearing it, that’s really clear in our minds. A good memory, that one.
It’s not long before you go onstage. How’s your condition today? (Emptying a glass) Excellent. We’re getting excited already!
How does the live set differ exactly from the DJ set? If a DJ set is what a DJ plays through a record or CD, a live set is basically like setting up a studio onstage. It’s live inasmuch as every individual part can be controlled; not quite like how rock bands play live, I suppose, but it’s in a similar vein.
What’s your favourite Korean food, if you have one? Kimchi and Korean barbecue - maybe it’s because we’re used to that sort of food, but Korean food tends to have a heavy feel to it. It’s fine, though, we cleared our plates with satisfaction. Also, if we may say so, makguli [TRANSLATOR’S NOTE: Korean rice wine] is amazing!
Compared to audiences from other countries, how does the Korean audience compare? Crazy would be the word! (Laughter) We’re ready to go crazy, too, today we’re really looking forward to going all out together.
Any plans for a new album? Nothing solid just yet. We’ll tour at least for the beginning of this year, and once we’re done, we plan to start working on the next album.
Apparently K-pop is trending in Europe right now - is that true? Oh! We know K-pop, alright! It’s making a huge sweep through Paris at the moment.
Really? Might you know any K-pop songs? None, sorry, haha! It can’t be that all Koreans like K-pop, though, right?
Not at all. And as one last thing, could we have a word for the fans? Happy New Year, everyone! We’re not quite sure why or how but we’ve heard that it was the Year of the Dragon this year? Thank you very much for always listening to and enjoying our music! And we’ll make sure to adore K-pop plenty from now on! (Laughter)
