My name's Yemi Akinyeye. Welcome to the page. To help get yourself familiarized with my brand, I want to let you know a few basic things about me.

I'm currently in my sophomore year of college studying journalism, but more specifically, broadcast journalism! Why'd I choose this major? Because I was born to do it. More details on that later, though.

I love all things bold, maximalist, and exciting! I'm a very social person. To put a technical label to it, I am indeed an extrovert. I thrive off being around people.

Now, to get into interests. I LOVE the arts. Music, paintings, expression, and more. That's just me. I'm not very much of a math person...at all. Don't ask me what the quadratic formula is. I won't be able to tell you.

I also have two YouTube channels. First one is: ~yemi's dumb digital diary~ and the other one is CHOCO VANILLA SWORL with my friend Cassandra! They're pretty cringey but also just as interesting, so I'm not going to force you, but if you ARE interested, you should totally check both of them out.

This is the official page of ~yemisthetic~, of course. What does that even mean, though? This is the official digital diary of Yemi Akinyeye! This is the rant corner, the goofy corner, the vent corner, the realism corner. This is the official world of YEMI AKINYEYE; an aesthetic and lifestyle like no other.

I will be taking you through the crazy, hectic, and mixed-up jungle and journey of my life as a young adult. It's gonna be like...flipping through the real-time autobiography of my life and TRUST. Today was a lonely Saturday...

I woke up to a phone call coming from my mother that a very special event that my whole family was going to attend had just recently been cancelled.

Right. GREAT. T_T

The event was scheduled earlier in April, but later got moved to a TBD date due to issues occurring within a specific part of the globe.

Additionally, we had paid a lot of money to have a beautiful dress sewn for the event.

Just for the event TO NOT HAPPEN...

Great.

Additionally, I have noticed that a lot of plans I had for this weekend didn't go according to plan.

For example, one of my special childhood friends was supposed to drive up to where I live this weekend. I was extremely excited to see her, and we had a thrilling phone call discussing all the future ideas we had in store.

However, life had other plans. She, in fact, didn't come.

Additionally, my other friends who are currently in town are way too preoccupied with their own lives to truly hang out.

And additionally? My boyfriend, whom I love and hang out with the most, is out of town for the weekend.

And look, this is not me saying that I don't have my own life, priorities, or tasks.

It's just to show that sometimes what we have in mind doesn't necessarily work out as we imagined.

So as I sat in my room thinking about all of the things that didn't go my way, I came to terms with another uncomfortable epiphany:

"WE'RE ALL MOVING ON."

Life is not stagnant. It is a constantly operating machine that will never stop for your own self-pity.

Think about it this way. Does the river cease to flow for the rocks lying at the bottom of its stream, or does the sun ever fail to set as the moon slowly shifts into the night sky?

No.

All of our lives are moving.

We're all locked into our own ideals of self-growth, enjoyment, and development.

Ever since high school ended, I have witnessed the many new stages and milestones my generation has hit.

Some are getting married.

Some have joined the army.

Some are student-athletes.

Some are on the cusp of cutting-edge research.

Some are starting families.

Some are in college.

Some just don't know what they're doing.

And that is just life.

All the people who have come into my life serve a certain purpose, and then when their role is done, they move along.

Family becomes more distant. Friends become strangers. Close voices become remote, and life shifts into a more innate and closed bubble (well, at least in my own experience).

It's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just the way it is...although it can feel lonely...and it does hurt. A lot.

As I am shifting into the modern adult version that I am becoming, diverging from the youthful spirits of child-like exuberance into the stark reality of physical existence, I need to realize that these mere filler days... the days that don't always go according to plan...are sometimes crafted as lessons to teach me something.

However, I must also remember that as the old leaves, the new has yet to begin.

There are so many more life experiences I have yet to encounter, places I have yet to discover, and people I have yet to meet that will all inevitably change my life.

Like for example, one day, my own special nuclear family.

Or a random person who will become my next close buddy.

I don't know what is to come.

But all I know is that in the end, it will be beautiful, and truthfully, all is working out for my good.

And that is the solitude I can rest with for tonight.

Oh yes! It's sooo happening.

THEE Cynthia Erivo, has come out with her new book "Simply More: A Book For Anyone Who Has Been Told They're Too Much."

And let me tell you...I'm goosified. So goosified that I just HAD TO BUY IT!...and so I did!

Here I am, proudly posted up with this fantastic piece of literature.

If some of you have been here before, you may know that I expressed in my last post how much the movie Wicked has changed my life. How the complex themes, characters, and my strong connection to Elphaba has ultimately impacted my worldview.

Additionally, if you didn't know, Cynthia Erivo is the actor behind Elphaba, but not only is she a singer and actor. She's also an author! I mean, how amazing.

She recently released her autobiography, which I believe is already a New York Times Bestseller. So many people are buying it and of course, I just had to join in.

What prompted me to buy her book, though? Well, automatically off reading the title, I knew the book was addressing people like me. "SIMPLY MORE: A Book For Anyone Who Has Been Told They're Too Much."

And let me tell you, OH. Trust me. I know A LOT about what it feels like to be told that you're too much. That you're too extravagant. That to be taken seriously, you need to CALM DOWN. That you need to tone it down. That YOU need to do the incomprehensible: YOU NEED TO DIM YOUR LIGHT.

But to that horrendous rhetoric? I say NO. I rebuke it. I simply disregard it.

An excerpt from the book quite LITERALLY shows us why we should not conform to society's close-minded standards in the prologue portion of her book:

"In order to be fully ourselves, we have to release ourselves from the fear of their judgments and ask ourselves, What do I really believe?

And then, we follow that." - (Cynthia Erivo, 1)

Wow. How inspiring.

Many of the fantastic BIG people with WORLD RENOWNED names and ideas that we know today are people who decided to show up as their TRUE SELVES, even when seeming delusional or deranged. They have complex and hard stories that could have pushed them back, but instead of succumbing to the standard, they fought, and they built something out of nothing! I mean, just look at Thomas Edison! Martin Luther King! Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, and so many more! You may not like all of them, but you CANNOT deny that they've made a profound impact upon this globe.

To you, reader, I encourage you not just today but EVERY DAY to truly dive into yourself. We're constantly changing all the time, and remember, to be human is to be changed. Search into your own biases. View yourself from an alternate perspective. Look at yourself in five years, ten years, or however many hours, days, or eternities you need to analyze yourself from and ask this question:

If your future self were to be looking at you now, would that version of you be proud?

If you cannot honestly say yes, then it's time to do some deep diving.

Basically, my whole point is to say BE FREE! BE FREE TO BE YOU! Show up as your truthful and authentic self every day. It's truly so liberating to live for you. To strive for your happiness. To show up as honestly as possible and to ultimately challenge the status quo.

Anyways, I am very, very grateful that I purchased Cynthia Erivo's book and I can't wait to be changed FOR GOOD even more! (Ya see what I did there? Hehe...Wicked fans will understand 😉) Anyway, that's all! If you made it this far...thank you for reading! Until next time, see ya!

No. I am not joking.

The first Wicked movie (the adaptation of the original musical) was released in 2024 during my freshman year of college. I decided to go watch it with my sister in theatres during December, and guess what? The movie impacted me so much that right after it ended and we got out, I ran into my car and immediately blasted the soundtrack, moved so deeply by the composition, lyrics, depth, and genuineness of each and every song. That love and astonishment followed me throughout the months that I played the soundtrack NON-STOP. WITHOUT CEASE. Completely obsessulated.

So you can imagine my excitement when Wicked: For Good was officially released in November of this year, 2025, and, yes. As soon as I came back home for Thanksgiving Break, you know DANG well that I instantaneously GRABBED my sister and dragged her to watch the movie with me, and let me TELL YOU.

THAT MOVIE?!

CHANGED. MY. LIFE.

It changed me so much that I got the nails, inspired by Glinda, the Good Witch, and Elphaba, the "Wicked Witch" of the West.

To the regular eye, the obsession won't make sense. Some will say I'm doing too much. Some will state that it's never that serious. To those lame remarks, I personally say...I don't care.

What regular people fail to understand is that this movie was an ode. An ode to us. An ode to those who have been scared to be their true and authentic selves. To those who have wanted to challenge authority but didn't have the platform to do so. For those who have struggled with the constant internal battle of deciding which side they belong on. For those of us who don't have the privilege of just staying silent. A movie for those who have been discriminated against by society for their difference. For those who just don't fit in and never truly did.

I also feel that the movie was a shoutout to people like me. Elphaba, the beautiful green empress, was taunted for being different ever since she was a child. Banished by society for speaking her mind. The woman who believed she could never truly be loved. The woman who never truly fit in.

Because for many years...that's how I was treated. That's how I felt and even still now...that's me.

When I was young, I was teased by my peers for being different. People used to call me names. Isolated themselves from me. I was made fun of by the boys I thought would love me. I was hypersexualized. Diminished by others. Ridiculed. Hurt.

And even now, people still try to dim my light. Even at my own 20th birthday, I had invited people who did not have my best interests in mind. At my own table, people were wishing for my ill will.

But guess what? As Maya Angelou said,

"You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt

But still, like dust, I'll rise."

(I highly recommend that you read that poem.)

Overall though, Wicked has taught me so much. I just wanted to tell you, reader. See, people will always have their own internal biases about us, boxing us into what they think we should be. You mustn't conform. Ever. You must stand your ground. Be loud. Be proud. Take up SPACE. Use your giftings to positively impact the world and people around you. Never say no to a challenge. Stand up and FIGHT for what you want!

Additionally, as an up-and-coming journalist, this is ever more real. I have to be a voice for the public. I have to fight against adversity and use my powers for good. I have to accuse the unjust and question those who are advocating for wrong. People may slander my name, wish bad for me, and even pray for my death, but just like Elphaba, I will fight forever, even if they label me wrongly.

So, yes. Wicked has a profoundly deep meaning to me.

I hate that dang subject. For real.

As a matter of fact, I'm actually sitting at my desk, in pain and strife, trying to solve stupid hypothetical math equations in advance of my upcoming test, and let me tell you...my brain feels so FRIED.

You know, I've never truly been strong in math. Ever since 3rd Grade, it's been a power struggle. Anytime they passed out those "THINK FAST" math sheets or gave us word problems to solve, all of a sudden, my brain INSTANTLY shut down, and all my thinking faculties went numb. It's like I'm operating off two brain cells, and each one is actively trying to fight for first base, but to no avail. Don't even get me started on when they passed out those state-mandated standardized tests, either. That was to my absolute DEMISE.

Anytime I have to study math, my brain looks like this:

Deep friiiied brain, dude. Deep fried.

Ever since they started introducing letters and the alphabet into math, that's when things took a turn for the worse. My brain just goes into panic mode, and I either A. COMPLETELY GIVE UP or B. CRY.

I think the reason why I have such a deep disdain for math is because of my past trauma. Ever since I was a kid, I have always felt behind compared to my peers when it came to mathematics. Every other child in class seemed to comprehend the complex topics put in front of them, except for me. Teachers would call on me, expecting me to give a clear and concise answer, but most of the time, of course, I got it wrong, and you could always hear the disappointment in their breath or see the pure cringe that was plastered across their face. It got so bad throughout my elementary to high school years that I had to go through countless special educators and tutors both in and out of school just to try and get on the same page with everybody else. It was bad. Also, if you have strict parents like I do, you know the pain.

Don't get me wrong, though, I have tried and tried to teach myself, but every single time without fail, I slip up. The numbers look like straight mumbo-jumbo, and it feels like a trick that some mean joker tried to put on me, but you know what else?! As soon as I'm finally on the road to grasping just one more concept, everybody else moves IMMEDIATELY to the next unit and I'm once again left in the dust, lost on my whereabouts and losing all made progress.

You know...when you have to endure that kind of crap on a constant day-to-day basis, you end up feeling pretty slow, stupid, and weird inside. Decimals, formulas, and math vocab now all seem like one big blur to me. Now, in college, I don't even raise my hand in any of my math classes or even try to make an effort to respond because I know without a doubt, I am probably wrong, and I usually am. It's really affected my progress, and I have never had anyone willing enough to truly sit with me long enough and say, "Hey. It's okay. I'll teach you." I guess it now all relies on myself since I'm an adult, but it still pains me that just one subject has really caused me so much turmoil.

To all the people out there who have struggled with math or are GOOD at math (lucky you), how has math changed your life?

Have you guys ever watched Love Island?

Whether you've watched all the seasons, some episodes, or a few clips from random online sources, there's absolutely no doubt that the popular reality TV show is quite captivating and taking the world by STORM. Yes, it's CRAZY for sure, but in a really alluring way. Like...woah. I would personally never do these things, but I still want to see what's going to happen next, you know?

But...I'm not here to discuss the characters or the dramatic elements within the show. I'm here to talk about THE THEME SONG. The official 2024/2025 Love Island Theme Song?! It's so good. Like....so good. (I'm a big music fan, so yes...I am always going to focus on the music first.)

The theme song is part of the reason why I like electronic/house music so much. It's something about the way the music PULSATES. It's electrifying. It's eccentric. It has personality, and it truly captures the vibe of the show. Now, the song is like a certified trademark. Anytime I hear that tune, I immediately think "MHM. That's the Love Island theme song" and I can't help but JAM, BOOGIE, STOMP MAH FEET, or bop my head to the rhythmmm. It's actually so fire. As a matter of fact, I added it to my house music playlist. Yup. That's how good it gets.

The musical composers really put that show on the map. They need to receive their flowers and accolades STAT because wow. Who knew a theme song could be so ENCHANTING?
