The top and bottom photos were taken in Croatia when he was 20 during his stint in the Merchant Marines in 1947. Rejected from the U.S. Navy due to the partial blindness he developed at the age of three caused by a rare form of ocular cancer which required his right eye to be surgically removed and replaced with a glass replica, Peter enlisted in the Merchant Marines instead where he served as a cook and a mess boy for a year and a half. "There they don't care if you're blind or not," he later recalled, adding with his usual blunt humor: "The only one on a ship who has to see is the captain. And in the case of the Titanic, he couldn't see very well, either."
