the maleo is a large bird species endemic to sulawesi and the nearby smaller island of buton. the maleo is a unique species that incubates their young by burying their eggs, to let them incubate through solar or volcanic heat. males and females look very similar, with females being slightly smaller and duller. these birds are omnivorous and mainly feed on ants, fruits, and seeds. their eggs are five times the size of a domestic chicken, to allow the maleo young to grow to almost full size within, hatching and becoming independent only a few hours afterwards.
