Approximately 300,000 fandom groups have been saved. The Yahoo Gedden project is working on identifying the fandoms of the mailing lists and can use your help. You can work at your own pace and the work can be done in small chunks of time. Attention to detail, the ability to work in Google Sheets/Docs, and the willingness to ask questions when in doubt are all you need. Questions are answered on Discord. No software or other tools needed besides your phone/computer and access to the Internet.

Approximately 300,000 fandom groups have been saved. The Yahoo Gedden project is working on identifying the fandoms of Persian language mailing lists and can use your help. We need people who can read Persian/Farsi natively* right now to help us identify the Unknown groups. You can work at your own pace and it is a low time commitment. Work is done on Discord, just reading the group description and a few messages and summarizing the messages in English, maybe answering a question of clarification ("is it talking about X or Y?"). No software or other tools needed besides your phone/computer and access to Discord.

I just saw someone say "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" as an argument for boycotting AO3
Babe AO3 is a nonprofit. They do not exist under the ethics of capitalism. Fanfiction is legal because no money is ever exchanged around it. (All the money given to AO3 is used to maintain their servers and pay their lawyers to help keep fanfiction legal.)
Fanfiction is one of the few things in this world - probably the one singular form of entertainment that does not exist within the confines of capitalism. So by your own logic, even if you hate some of the content on AO3, it's inherently the only ethical thing to consume in the whole world.

From Doranwen, lead volunteer: "Tagging has slowed somewhat, as people have gotten busy with school and work. There are still over 5000 tabs to tag. However, experienced taggers have tagged nearly 50 apiece. If we had 100 taggers tackle the project right now and stick with it the way some of our volunteers have, it would be finished very shortly!
So this is once more a call to those of you who are interested in seeing this complete: If you want to help, consider either tagging a tab, advertising/recruiting others to tag (see the boost text from this post if you need it), or both!
I spent several years working on the metadata at the expense of working on projects that would help support me financially, so I've had to step back from actively working on it for now. However, if all the tabs get tagged, I will absolutely be there to sort the actual data. I'd love to see it organized and uploaded!

From 2020:“Between the #ArchiveTeam volunteers and the Yahoo Groups Fandom Rescue Project, we saved 960,233 unique groups through Yahoo’s GetMyData method (not counting what was saved through the Python script and PGOffline). Wow! And hopefully some more is yet to come as there are a few people who have promised to send us their GMDs but haven’t yet.”
“How much of that is #fandom? At this point, all I can estimate is "somewhere around 300,000?” It is really impossible to know yet. I finished working on the metadata and will be uploading it soon, and sometime next spring (I hope!) we might begin on the more finely-detailed analysis that would let us identify individual fandoms and all of that.“

What you're doing is terrific, and I'm thrilled! So much was lost when Yahoo!Groups was closed down. I have a request: About twenty-odd years ago, I ran a Group called psychedelic_monkees, a Monkees-Beatles RPG. If it's at all possible, could you please see if you can archive it? I'd love to be able to store it safely. Thank you!
