Day One: Happy Birthday

“Happy Birthday!”

Yachi screeches, jumping back into the storage closet. Confetti in her face, she has to blink for a second to for her eyes to register what is happening.

Before her stands the entire team with a random assortment of presents and a small cupcake adorning Kageyama’s palm. Around them are balloons that look fit for a two-year-old’s party. Their faces are decorated with grand smiles, colorful party hats atop their heads. Nishinoya and Tanaka are blowing on those, um, party blowers? What were those called? She doesn’t know. Right now all that’s in her head is that people care.

All day she wondered if anyone remembered. It had felt like no one even wanted to talk to her all day. It was her birthday, and yet it was one of the saddest days of her school career. Even Hinata didn’t bring it up. Hinata!

Now it makes sense. Tsukishima shoving a napkin in Hinata’s mouth after bringing up party hats, the Mysterious Bag that Yachi was absolutely NOT allowed to touch, the stuttered speech she got from practically all of her teammates that day. That no one brought up her birthday. That no one even so much as mumbled a happy birthday, that no one cared.

Only, people do care. Her entire team cares. Her birthday was not forgotten, not lost. After what she had believed to be the worst day out of all her worst days it was such a relief to see her friends, with wide smiles and open arms.

“I-I’m so glad!” She can feel her eyes start to water and tears start to fall. And for the first time in what feels like forever, they’re happy tears.
