It's no secret that Odysseus is an unreliable narrator, especially with how The Odyssey's first line calls him a "man of twists and turns," but that doesn't necessary have to always mean a bad thing.

Take his last scene with Calypso. When she says it isn't right for a mortal like Penelope to be more beautiful, he agrees, but remember that he's talking to a goddess.

A goddess who has kept him on her island for years.

A goddess who has power over him.

And a goddess who is explicitly comparing herself to his wife.

What is he supposed to say? "Actually, my wife is prettier"?

Romantic, yes, but also stupid.

It's extremely dangerous for any poor sap to compare a god's beauty, so him agreeing doesn't mean he believes what she says, but rather him wanting to navigate out of a dangerous situation.

And look what he says afterward:

"Nevertheless I long—I pine, all my days— to travel home and see the dawn of my return." - Line 242-243

The whole point of this is for Penelope, and if it means telling his immortal former captor exactly what she wants to hear while keeping his real thoughts to himself for him to leave safely, he'd do it.

He'd play her game, but the one thing he won't deny is his longing for Penelope.

Yeah... I mean, didn't Psyche go through hell because some people thought she was prettier than Aphrodite? Saying a mortal is prettier than a god is basically signing their/your death warrant. It sounds cute to do that, until you remember how psychotic the gods can be over the smallest slights.

That entire myth is like, a massive example of why you DON'T do that.

As an undergrad, former lab-mate has done something it takes graduate students and professors years to accomplish (make an enemy of every single person in his field)

I don’t know all the exact details, but basically his project is analyzing the DNA of invasive apple snails in Belize. Finding out where they came from and whatnot.

There’s been a bunch of other studies over the years like that but each one gives conflicting results. A bunch of different species names have been proposed, except no one can agree on which species lives where or is called what. To make matters worse somebody would reuse somebody else’s species name for a completely different population. Lot of confusion going on.

Anyways this dude basically went “y’all are all wrong, this is very likely just one species of snail”
