Both Hibbert and Holmes attribute his pre-Waterloo catnap to the 17th, rather than the 18th, but honestly he'd been getting such little sleep (midnight to three am on the 18th), he'd have deserved a nap if he got one. (Hibbert 176, 180; Holmes 234-36) Also, it wouldn't have been out of character for him.
Wellington once said, "Luckily, I have the power, very generally, of going to sleep when I choose." (Hibbert 122) He used this ability a few times in the Peninsula, sleeping on the ground for a bit before Talavera and again in the lead up to Salamanca. (Hibbert 122) If there wasn't a newspaper to nap under, he'd wrap himself in his cloak. (Holmes 178)
"If Wellington's importunate officers would not let him sleep in bed there was always the remedy of a nap snatched on a hot hill-top, aromatic with thyme and lavender. His staff well remembered one day of pitiless windings by the two armies locked together like angry serpents, when their Commander-in-Chief suddenly flung himself down with a newspaper over his head and strict instructions about calling: "Watch the French through your glass, FitzRoy.... When they reach that copse near the gap in the hill, wake me." (Longford 282)
While Wellington absolutely had a dramatic streak, this wasn't part of it.
