Jazz hastily typed her answer back.

( no need! we’re already clear to go )

She thought for a moment.

( plus her parents are out of town plus we’re 18 so I don’t think we need any babysitting )

( If you say so. What time should I pick you up tomorrow? )

Jazz went back and forth with him for a bit before he finally said “I love you” and “stay safe.”

She looked up from where she standing inside Lakeside Mall. The last stragglers were on their way out before the mall closed for the day. She’d put herself by the central fountain to be as visible as possible but nerves were preventing her from sitting down. Omg! She was really here! She was really doing this!

The old book weighed down her tote bag, combined with a couple other resources she deemed necessary. How does one go about hunting ghosts? Or looking for eldritch cult secrets?

She did her best to shake off the nerves and took another lap around the fountain. She had to chill. It’s not like they were doing anything extreme. Just keeping an eye out for anything weird. It wasn’t even ghost hunting, per se. It was just… ghost observing. Like bird watching. But scarier.

He flicked on the flashlight, checking his surroundings and squinting into the distance. His eyes finally caught a figure standing by the fountain. That chemist girl, Jazz! He called over to her and waved his hand, flicking the flashlight back off and speedwalking over.

Yep, here I am…!

She had a flashlight but fear of being discovered by security kept her from turning it on. Not saying she’d never snuck into somewhere she didn’t belong, but never in a place so public.

Is this.. safe? I just— I’m new to actually investigating.

“Investigating” was her way of saying “trespassing on potentially supernaturally charged grounds.” And she couldn’t deny that learning there may be some truth to the dark secrets claimed by the old library book had her a little freaked.

I brought the book, by the way.

She handed it to Derek.

And uh... It's kinda safe? I mean, I've never gotten hurt but... If you hear laughing just lock yourself in the bathroom. Trust me.

I don't know if we need a specific store but, I there's some weird shit going on around the employee's only hall near the Subway.

She let Derek lead them through the mall. The darkness was suffocating. A couple emergency or machine lights could be spotted here and there but the bulk of the mall was black.

She kept her tote clutched close to her side. What happens if they find something? What would that even look like? She had her phone on her. Should she record it? That’s something ghost hunters did. Always wanting to get proof on camera like that actually proves anything in an age of Photoshop and AI.

It certainly is creepy. Maybe not as creepy as the Waylon place but it’s just so eerie. Like a.. a liminal space! That’s what they’re called.

And, hey, if you really do have time to listen-- Derek began to explain his story about the Lakeside Mall to her, clearly on edge when he finished explaining as they arrived infront of the closed-up subway.

A creeping malaise started to spread throughout her bones. Anxiety? No, she was already nervous. This was somehow worse. It felt like they were no longer alone.

Shadows played tricks on her eyes and danced in the corners of her vision. She turned to look behind her, hoping it came off as more casual than it felt. No need to let this Nighthawk know she was so freaked by the mall.

Whatever happened to you was probably just a prank. I have friends who have had bad encounters with Jagerman and that Brad Callahan. It was probably something stupid they set up to mess with you.

Let’s go farther in. What about the food court? That’s practically center of the mall, right?

Sorry... Anyway-- Food court, good idea, maybe we can sorta start from the food court and work our way around the mall with an EMF reader? Or the laser thermometer? We cant get into any stores since they're all shuttered... but that should shave at least an hour off of our exploration. Plus what happened to me was in the main area so there's no need to check any back rooms.

Derek flicked his flashlight off seeing as Jazz had pulled out her own. Stuffing it back in his back and removing the EMF reader from his bag, so they could check for where ghost activity was strongest.

Yeeesssh... Definitely the Lakeside Mall Incident. That's my name for it anyway. Nobody ever believes me when I tell them this happened because it seems SO elaborate, or they say it was a prank but I cannot believe it was just some dumb prank.

Me and Grace were out at the mall pretty late, I still had some things to get but she had to go back home, cuz her parents have this real strict curfew.

And there wasn't really any people around, like there was a few cashiers who's stores hadn't closed yet and I think I saw Pete's brother?? (I don't remember his name, sorry!! I'm not really one of Pete's friends...) kinda across the mall at one point?

But yeah uh, Grace had left to get back home before her parents got worried, so I was alone when I came out of Subway, and I hear like, a shit ton of laughter in the distance that kinda sounds like Max and his friends, So I ducked out into this employees only hallway just because getting caught out for trespassing is miles better than whatever the fuck Jägerman has up his sleeves. And you know how sounds get quieter the further you get from them??? Yeah I closed that door and would've expected it to get muffled but instead as SOON as I started walking after shutting that door it was RIGHT outside the door. And it didn't even sound like Max anymore, not like it was Jason or Kyle or someone else, it just sounded like some absolutely hysterical lunatic, like some JOKER shit

So of course I run FULL SPEED down this hallway because like, what if it's some insaneo dude who wants to rip my face off??? And I hear the door SLAM open behind me and what sounds like hooves or some shit running down the corridor behind me???

and I ran into this employees only bathroom, and locked myself in one of the stalls because I mean what else am I supposed to do??? And I just hear it start BANGING on the stall doors, the laughter is SO much louder than it was before, and the bathroom just starts absolutely stinking like something or someone was rotting in there. And I kinda look at the shadow that's being cast on the floor and it genuinely looks like the fucking devil. I'm not even kidding, it looks like a massive goat standing on two legs or a goat with a person's torso or something.

And its laughter starts like, sounding more like it was screaming "DEREK! DEEEEREEEKK!" over and over and over again after a while, and it was SO loud, like METAL vocalist loud and I thought my eardrums were gonna straight up burst. And I was so confused on how NOBODY, not even the Subway cashier or Pete's bro had heard the laughter, or the screaming, and come in or like called the police or something. But after like, I think it was only like 5 or 6 minutes?? (it felt like HOURS) it just stopped. Like completely. It didn't stop and then leave or anything. It just straight up vanished. The shadow was still there on the floor after it stopped but as soon as I opened the stall the shadow and whatever was casting it were just completely gone?? And like, it had been SCRATCHING and BANGING on the door so loud it nearly broke the door in and yet there was no marks or anything on the door???

So I came out of the bathroom and I kinda snuck down the corridor to the emergency exit, and I went around to the front of the mall to see if there was anyone leaving that could've done it or anyone I could ask if they heard the screaming,

And I saw Pete's bro like JUST walking out, so he had been in the mall the WHOLE time this was happening, so I asked him If he had heard any screaming or laughing and he just spoke to me like I was some little kid making up stories and PUSHED PAST ME!!

Hatchetfield is a strange town full of strange people and stranger happenings. One must be careful whom and what they run into.

Perhaps your proximity to others called forth an entity that grew curious with you. Most likely Theodore... But it could just be curiosity or torment on the creatures mind. It was wise if you to hide and endure it. If it happens again, think of light, dear Derek.

Think of brightness and warmth and the gentle string of a spiders' web.

Though for your peace of mind, one can assume the devils of this world are indeed afraid of that spider. Like flies in a giant web, they fear being caught because the string would prevent them from acting as they please.

I’ve had this for about a week now. I was looking for a book at the library when I accidentally— [she clears her throat]— knocked a couple books onto the floor. But, hidden behind them, way, way back in this weird nook in the shelf, this was tucked away.

I’ve looked the whole thing over and it’s mostly gibberish. At least, I can’t make sense of the writing. Except for this particular page…

I've investigated that place before, really creepy...

And I talked with someone recently who actually has connections to that whole thing! The Waylon Place is sort of ritualistic cult grounds for people who worship the "Lords In Black". Which are considered a sort of "Greater Power", actually, so... ... ......... Holy shit... Are these ALL connected to the cult?

I’ve been to the high school and I’ve heard about the Waylon Place, but the rest of those are new to me. What’s up with the mall?

Found out because I put out a flier asking people to share their ghost stories, and there was this one old dude, the biology professor at the college I think? He was literally JUMPING at the chance to share it with someone who'd believe him. He was waxing lyrical for like, a solid two hours about these guys. It was EPIC. I don't think I've ever had anyone that enthusiastic before!

It can be hard to believe, I get that... Most would never believe that ghosts exist ...until they see them in-person.

And, yeah. Far too many people have called me a crazy loser or just say its fairytales but I'm real glad there are other people who see what I see!

Like, did you know there's actually multiple?

Found out because I put out a flier asking people to share their ghost stories, and there was this one old dude, the biology professor at the college I think? He was literally JUMPING at the chance to share it with someone who'd believe him. He was waxing lyrical for like, a solid two hours about these guys. It was EPIC. I don't think I've ever had anyone that enthusiastic before!

It can be hard to believe, I get that... Most would never believe that ghosts exist ...until they see them in-person.

And, yeah. Far too many people have called me a crazy loser or just say its fairytales but I'm real glad there are other people who see what I see!

...Lightning storm, by the way. Just clarifying. It was a lightning storm. Read about it somewhere.

(But lightning doesn't- shouldn't do that?! It's been haunting me for years...)

Could say I'm a little interested in the paranormal myself...
