Glass and PVC enclosures look similar on a shelf but behave very differently once substrate, lighting and an animal are inside.

Glass is heavier, loses heat and humidity faster, and gives full visibility. PVC insulates better and is lighter, but has opaque side panels — which can actually help a shy or newly acquired animal feel more secure.

For tropical, humidity-dependent species, PVC's insulation is a real practical advantage. For species that need strong airflow and full visibility, glass usually wins.

These three get used interchangeably by beginners, but they solve different problems.

A heat mat warms substrate from below for belly heat. Never run one without a thermostat — unregulated heat mats are a common cause of burns.

A ceramic heat emitter radiates heat with no visible light, the only one of the three that can safely run overnight without disrupting a day-night cycle.

A basking bulb combines heat and light — standard for diurnal, sun-basking species — but should be switched off at night.

A musty smell or constant condensation on the glass usually isn't a humidity problem — it's a ventilation problem.

Stagnant, humid air is one of the more common causes of mold, fungus gnats and respiratory issues, even when the humidity percentage on your hygrometer looks exactly right.

Full mesh lids maximize airflow but make humidity harder to hold. Vented glass or PVC panels sit in the middle. Mostly sealed, front-opening builds hold humidity best but rely entirely on small vents.

Crested geckos are one of the few beginner-friendly reptiles that don't need supplemental heating in most homes — they do fine at normal room temperature and can even overheat above 85°F.

That single fact changes everything about their setup. The priority is vertical space — crested geckos are arboreal and rarely touch the ground by choice.

The part people get wrong is humidity. It's a swing: mist heavily after lights-out so humidity climbs to 70-80% overnight, then let it dry back down to 50-60%. Permanently soaked substrate raises the risk of skin and respiratory problems.

Lighting and heating is often the single biggest cost — UVB fixtures, basking bulbs, thermostats — and UVB bulbs need replacing every 6-12 months regardless of how they look.

Both get recommended to first-time keepers, but they're almost opposite animals to care for.

Handling: Leopard geckos tolerate handling reasonably well. Chameleons mostly don't — most chameleons tolerate handling rather than enjoy it, and frequent handling stresses them out.

Humidity: Leopard geckos want it low (30-40%), with a humid hide just for shedding. Chameleons need consistently high humidity delivered through daily misting.

If your isopods or springtails keep dying off instead of multiplying, the substrate or setup is usually the problem, not the animals.

1. Adding livestock before the colony establishes. A clean-up crew needs 3-4 weeks to build a stable breeding population before it can handle waste from a full-sized animal. Add the pet too early and the crew gets overwhelmed and crashes.

2. Mismatched substrate for the species. Tropical isopods need moisture-retentive substrate; arid species need it to drain fast. 3. No drainage layer. Without one, excess water pools at the bottom and sours the whole substrate column, killing the very organisms meant to keep it clean.
