In “Still Life, Vase of Flowers”, Severin Roesen fills the painting with details that reward a closer look: dew on rose petals, a deep purple iris and a white calla lily catching the light. Nothing feels accidental.

After moving from Germany to America in the 1840s, Roesen became known for these rich still lifes. Different flowers and fruits appear together, creating a picture of abundance that celebrates nature at its most generous.
