Prompt: “Everyone keeps telling me you’re the bad guy.”
Hypocrisy is a strange animal. Bonnie's known this for some time. She's spent years being called judgmental all while being judged for her own opinions and beliefs. Those views hadn't stopped her from saving everyone's ass time and time again. But that was a form of hypocrisy too, wasn't it? Being pigeonholed in the role of hero even while being told and shown that your own life has no value beyond what you can do for those around you.
"And what of those around you, Bonnie?" he often asks, his tone having the effect of a sharpened blade across skin, "What are they to you really? I've taken away more than they've ever given you. Given you more than the thought of you has ever even crossed their minds. Who do you really have without me?"
No one, in truth. There was no one to have unless she could be had. Unless she could be drained of her power so that she could die and bleed for them. Kai may be a Siphoner but they were parasites. They'd sucked the life out of her even before she and Kai met. And he has, in his own way, brought it back. Even if rage was at the center. The burning of it was warm enough to kill the chill of emptiness. Warm enough to remind her that part of her was human. Not just witch. Not just machine.
He knows loneliness. Abandonment. Hypocrisy. Knows Bonnie in the way that they cannot because of it. In a way they've never made an effort to know her. Obsession aside. Stalking aside. Because they cause the harm that makes her up, the unseen gaping wound that is now her being, but cannot feel it. That pain is hers alone. Cannot even see their own bullshit. The consequences of it are hers alone. Cannot comprehend what's wrong with holding Bonnie to some moral high ground when it comes to saving their lives, to not taking their lives, to living her life or not living it, but never, never, never, when it comes to allowing them to live theirs.
Elena can fuck a murder. A rapist. An addict. "Which Salvatore are we talking about, again?" Kai asks.
Bonnie shrugs. "Flip a coin."
Caroline can bait and bed the villain. It didn't matter who he'd killed. Terrorized. Enslaved. Even Tyler.
They can all claim love. Friendship. Devotion. Even as they abused. Manipulated. Isolated. Used. They can take and take and take and expect her to give and give and give even as they offered nothing in return.
Sure she and Kai have tried to kill each other. But how many times has Bonnie died for them? Bled for them? How many times has her heart stopped beating? How many times has she been asked to kill for them? Even as he tried to take her life it meant something to him to take it. Meant something to die by her hands. Meant something to get under her skin.
They want to protect her they say. She laughs. Where was this protection when Grams died? When her mother was turned? When Bonnie walked into the line of fire for them again and again? Where was it in the aftermath of all she has suffered? Where was it before the suffering began?
If she's going to suffer, let it be on her terms. Let her be able to dole it out and not just take it. Let her be able to get a bit of blood on her hands and teeth and tongue. Let her be the executioner and not the martyr. She can be those things to him. With him.
“Everyone keeps telling me you’re the bad guy.” She says as he traces the scar he left on her skin with his tongue. As she thinks about the scars they've left that never quite reached the surface but were still somehow unburied.
Even this. Asking her opinion. Being open to her thoughts. Even the ones that don't lend him favor. Is a gift. A gift that makes the way they torture each other bearable. That makes the pain bliss.
"I say they're right," she says, "I just don't give a shit."
