Tricks up their sleeves

“But I’m not, though! That’s the thing! If I was tired I’d stay home and take a nap. Believe me, I know what’s going on with my body, you don’t. You just said you didn’t.” Callie pokes herself in the stomach, the other hand propped on her hip. She has to flail to catch the soda and prevent it from flying over the edge of the cliff and down into Octo Valley.

“Besides, I’ve been more relaxed than ever lately.” She pops the can’s tab with a hiss of carbonation. “I dunno what your standards for relaxed are but they must be way stricter than mine. I feel totally fine.”

So much for caring ... Which by the way was exhausting. 

“ Fine. ” The slight frustration in her voice is barely audible. “ I went too far. ”

She doesn’t sigh this time, just looks into the distance, eyes observing the sky, then the emptiness of the canyon captures her attention. 

He doesn’t remember anything from the past. He doesn’t remember anything about coming there. His memories are fuzzy and confused, covered in green, soapy ink.

The world I knew seems like a trap. I'm drawn now to the strange and new. Would my old friends think me a sap ?

His eyes keep looking to that distance shore, to the sea where it all went down. His breath is lost in the salty breeze.  One day he had opened his eyes, in a lime-colored paradise. The descent in hell was abrupt and fast.

The tides go out and take the light. How will I greet you when we meet ? It keeps me up on inkstained nights.

“…Wait, wha-”

Metry didn’t even have time to finish her very brief sentence before she was flicked in the nose, letting out a frustrated noise of pain and wincing. “Hey…don’t do that. That hurt.” She rolled her eyes as Summer’s comments, speeding up her walking speed and crossing her arms. “Yeah, I actually care about the guy I’m going out with. I think you’re supposed to do that.”

" Whatever, whatever ! " Summer cheered, giggling lightly. " You're so sour Metry, losen up a bit ! "

She took her hand, dragging her along as she began to run towards the mall. It was big, it was new, so of course she was excited. It didn't take long for her to pull them inside one of the first clothing shops, and she immediately lost herself in the women section. Summer would sometimes take some dresses out and put them in front of her newfound ... Friend ? Were they friends ? It didn’t seem to matter for now.

“Fair enough,” Metry shrugged, walking off in the direction of the mall. “Old? This cardigan is my trademark! Do you know the name of my team…? Actually, since you don’t know Emperor’s name, I’m just gonna assume you don’t.” And what the heck was an Empoleon? “We’re the School Cardigans. And I’ve got quite the selection of clothing at home. I just wear this so often because it’s my school and Turf uniform.”

“ Sure honey, but there’s a hole in it ... ”

She pointed out briefly a spot on her jacket, waiting for the girl to lower her head, before flicking her nose with a giggle. “ I am messing with you, chill out ! Who doesn’t know about Emperor, nerd ? But you sure do care about him to get so worked up, hmmm ? ”

Aria nodded silently - wherever Soba was taking her, it must have been of the utmost importance. Something really secret, really hidden, maybe even something that only the agents were supposed to know about?

She nervously followed Soba as she ducked down an alleyway, trying to walk with a narrow stride so she wouldn’t be brushing against the walls so often. Aria had no idea where they were going, and she was almost too scared to ask - she’d been all over the city, but she usually stayed out of alleyways because they were a bit claustrophobic for her tastes. She nodded again as Soba spoke, and followed her into the curtain…

…only to see what seemed to be a perfectly ordinary noodle shop, albeit one that did seem unusually good based on the smells from the kitchen and the pictures on the menu.

“…noodles?” Aria whispered to Soba, raising her eyebrows. “I, uh…I thought this was about something a bit more, uh…serious. Like, I thought someone might’ve died or something. Not that I’m, like…complaining, or anything, since I like noodles, but…uh…I’m a bit confused.”

It took very little for Soba to look so displeased for once, as she wasn’t usually one to frown that easily. Aria must have spoken a few words that were too much for her. 

“ This is serious. Do you think that you find those kind of places anywhere ? Good, quiet and calm noodle shops, in Inkopolis ? Almost no one comes in here. ”

In fact, the very few other clients could be as peculiar as those one could find in the Deep Sea Metro. They were both the only inklings and octolings around, aside from maybe one or two people in the kitchen. Soba sat at the counter after taking off her jacket, but left her mask on.
