âI know the Hebrew is scary, but theyâre just jelly donuts. Delicious, home-made jelly donuts. Trust me, itâs the hardest thing in the world working this stand without eating all of them myself. Can I get you one?â
The jelly donuts did look beyond delicious. But then again, Rory had never had a donut before in her life. She didnât know if theyâd actually taste as delicious as they looked. âUm, sweets arenât really me thing. Sorry.â She apologized, her eyes still longingly staring at the desserts. Sheâd love to try one; but she knew her father would kill her if he found out she strayed from her diet. Heâd been mad enough over the milkshake and fries sheâd gotten with Bellamy. âBut they look wonderful. And for the record, Hebrew isnae scary. Itâs a beautiful language with quite the rich history.â
âListen - â Naomi started her pitch. Her uncle was far better at catching buyersâ attention, but she had to pull her weight here, right? âI know you have a family member who wants a book on Cacti. On Amazon, this baby retails for 15 bucks, soft cover. This is a mint condition hard cover book on Cacti for $1.50.â
Of course when she heard there was a stall selling books, Roryâs plan was to make a beeline straight there (after visiting Bellamy at the firewood cutting stall firstâAlba desperately wanted to say hello). So with her collie in tow, she started in search of the book vendor, only to have someone from the stand call out to her. âCacti?â She inquired, turning her full attention to the stall and the spread of books. âThatâs quite specific; and Iâm sorry to tell ye, Iâve no one interested in such a topic...â She apologized, her eyes glancing over the books before her. âNow this, on the other handââ She reached down to pick up a paperback copy of The Fellowship of the Ring. âDo ye happen to have the rest of the set?âÂ
thatdudebellamyâ:
âEnnui?â Isnât that the Japanese dish made from the sea creature with lots of pokey stuff? You know, the one they crack open to eat the inside yellow part? He canât remember what itâs called but heâs pretty sure itâs that. âWhat does Charlotte actually do for you now?â Bellamy asks curiously, completely unfazed by the fact that Rory has this whole other life where sheâs like, super rich or something. It just seems like this far off thing he doesnât really think about because Rory is so Rory and thatâs already so much to think about. âSince youâre like pretty much adult status, I doubt sheâs got much to worry about. Sâgotta be pretty cool though. Kinda like your own Alfred. Yanno, like Batman. Bruce Wayne,â he adds after a beat in case Rory needs a little more clarification. But he thinks Alfred is a butler or whatever but thatâs probably the same thing. Maybe itâs the term for a Dude Nanny. âRobert the Bruce?â Correct him if heâs wrong but isnât Bruce like⌠a name? âSo⌠itâs about a Bob tryna be a Bruce?âÂ
âEnnui. Itâs a word of French origin meaning: a feeling of listlessness and dissatisfaction arising from a lack of occupation or excitement.â Rory stated matter-of-factly. It was a word that frequented her vocabulary and also one sheâd grown up hearing used quite often. She sometimes forgot not everyone was familiar with the term. âAs for the dish yer describing, I cannae say Iâm familiar enough with Japanese cuisine to know what it is yer referring to. â The extent of her knowledge of Japanese cuisine was sushi. And sheâd never tried sushi. âCharlotte more or less is just there if I need her for anything; but in all honesty, sheâs taken more on a role thatâs a cross between a maid and a personal nurse... Oh, and a personal shopper too.â The Batman reference went right over the Scotâs head. She sorta knew who Batman was; but she had no idea who Alfred was. Or Bruce Wayne. As far as superheroes went, she was only really familiar with Superman, aka Clark Kent; and that was because of Bellamyâs Halloween costume and the fact that Orion used to like Superman when they were small. âA Bob trying to be a Bruce?â She couldnât help the laughter that escaped her lips at that description. It was ridiculous. âUm... no. Robert I, more commonly known as Robert the Bruce, was the King of Scots from 1306 until his death in 1329. And Bruce comes from the Bruce dynasty, or, uh, clan.â
St. Andrewâs Day Aesthetic
St. Andrewâs Day is Scotlandâs official national day. In 2006, the Scottish Parliament designated St Andrewâs Day as an official bank holiday. It is also a national holiday in Romania (since 2015). The celebration of St Andrew as a national festival is thought to originate from the reign of Malcolm III (1034â1093). It was thought that ritual slaughter of animals associated with Samhain was moved to this date, so as to assure enough animals were kept alive for winter. But it is only in more recent times that the 30 November has been given national holiday status.
In Scotland, and many countries with Scottish connections, St Andrewâs Day is marked with a celebration of Scottish culture with traditional Scottish food, music and dance. In Scotland the day is also seen as the start of a season of Scottish winter festivals encompassing St Andrewâs Day, Hogmanay and Burns Night. There are week-long celebrations in the town of St Andrews and in some other Scottish cities.
It is said that when Saint Andrew was crucified he requested it to be on a soltire, or X shaped cross, because he deemed himself unworthy of using Christâs cross. This is why the Scottish flag has an X on it.

âWell, Iâve been good,â he answers initially. Thenâ âOr not too good, but okay. I mean, I missed you a lot. It kinda sucks having like, 3 friends here.â Itâs the honest truth. Bellamy doesnât feel comfortable enough to just sit and talk to anybody. âDid really good on the homework you helped me with though. They should totally look into making a tutoring app via text or somethinâ. Worked wonders.â Even if Rory was bed-ridden, she still managed to help him out with his studies. That was super bomb. In a way, it was like she was still there even if she wasnât. He still prefers her actual presence than her online one though. Not that her online presence wasnât cool too. âUhh, I hired like a babysitter while you were gone.â It takes him a second to realize how weird that might sound. âI mean, like, from school. And like not for me,â he clarifies, face confused. âMy sister,â he adds after a moment, wondering where he was going with this. âBut uh yeah, thatâs basically what Iâve been doing since you were gone. Whatâd you do?â
When Bellamy first said heâd been good, Roryâs smile widened. She was glad to hear heâd been good; but then her smile faltered ever so slightly. Okay was just that: okay. It wasnât good. Sheâd rather him have been good. âWell Iâm glad ye did well on yer coursework. Helping ye with yers actually gave me something to do. So I must thank ye for that... Otherwise, I think I mightâve perished of ennui.â Sheâd managed to keep up with her homework for the duration of her time out sick; and sheâd always been one to complete her work rather quickly. âOh, I knew ye meant for Peyton. Yer much too old for a nanny... by all standards other than me parentsâ. Technically I still have one whilst back at the castle; but Charlotteâs more like an honorary auntie than anything else now.â That was something she didnât share with most people; but she knew Bell wouldnât tease her. And if he did, sheâd bring up the fact Charlotte was still technically Orionâs nanny too. And he was 24. âWhat did I do? I ensured Iâd not return to school with any make-up work, slept roughly eighteen hours a day, and felt like utter shite... Oh, and I watched that new Netflix film about Robert the Bruce. But I fell asleep about thirty minutes in; so I cannae say much about it.â
thatdudebellamyâ:
That voice. Bellamy feels like he hasnât heard that voice in forever. He looks towards it and his face immediately lights up. âRory!â Heâs abandoning his conversation and meeting her the rest of the way without warning, his arms quick to come around her in a hug. âDude!â He canât believe Rory is here in the flesh. âYouâre alive!â He announces when he pulls back, hands on her arms as he takes her in. Tangible! Talking! âThought the flu would have you forever, Iâm so glad youâre backââ Glad is an understatement. Bellamy has an incredibly small handful of friends at Northlake, and the flu took a majority of them for the past two weeks. Itâs safe to say heâs been suffering without their presence around. Heâs pretty sure heâs clogged Roryâs phone with an absurd amount of texts for the time sheâs been gone. âYouâre all good?â
Rory was both surprised and not surprised as Bellamy quickly threw his arms around her in a hug. She knew he had to miss her while she was out sick. Sheâd missed him too. Itâd been awful not being able to see him. âOf course Iâm alive, ye numpty. Ye think Iâd let influenza be the death of me? Iâve been through worse. This was nothing.â She teased, hugging him back for a few seconds before letting go of the embrace, a smile wide upon her face. She let out a light sigh before answering his question, the smile never leaving her face as she spoke. She was just too damn glad to be back and no longer feeling like absolute crap. âMmhmm. Iâm all good... Howâve ye been? I feel like Iâve much to catch up on.â
â hey ! a bit weird seeing you here . â
âI know. I know.â Rory shook her head and let out a soft sigh. âIâve disappeared for nearly two weeks... But Iâm back. So ye can get used to seeing me around again.â She added, her lips widening into a slight smile. It felt good to be back.
âDude, Iâm like super exhausted from that whole soup kitchen thing. Pretty sure thereâs gonna be zero leftovers at home this year because Iâm gonna eat it all. I think Iâm gonna look into doing this kind of thing every year thoughâ itâs really good for like, building up an appetite. And like obviously helps out other people and all, and thatâs obviously more important,â Bellamy makes sure to clarify. He doesnât want to make it seem like him having the appetite to eat everything his mom prepares this year is more important helping people because thatâs totally not true. He just thinks itâs super cool that heâs going to eat this year and actually be super hungry and like have a new perspective on food and stuff because of the whole giving out food to people thing.
âItâs really sweet that ye volunteered yer time at the soup kitchen.â Rory commented in response to overhearing Bellamyâs words, a spring in her step as she made her way towards her friend. She hadnât seen him in roughly two weeks due to having come down with the flu and being stuck in the hospital; so saying she was glad to be out and about wouldâve been an understatement. And she was very glad to finally get to see him again. Sheâd missed her favorite person in Northlake. âI wouldâve loved to join ye... Maybe next year.â If she was still doing the exchange program thing this time next year, sheâd definitely see about volunteering. It sounded very rewarding.Â

âMost people say Mean Girls, but yeah, thatâs her. Sheâs not really that good, but sheâs always in a bunch of rom coms.â
âOh! Iâve actually seen Mean Girls!â Rory exclaimed, probably with a bit more excitement than was necessary. Usually when someone mentioned some popular movie, sheâd heard of it but never saw it. She wasnât a big movie fan. But when she knew what someone was talking about more than just recognizing the name, she got excited. She didnât feel so left out.

Rory: Well I'm flattered.

âIt wasnât that great, so youâre not missing out. I only remember it because it played three times in a row once while I was at the doctorâs office. Believe me when I say I never wanted to watch another Amanda Seyfried movie ever again.â
Amanda Seyfried? Why did that name sound familiar? It took her a few seconds; but then Rory remembered why she knew that name. âSheâs the girl from Mamma Mia, correct?â

âI hope it was hilarious because Iâm gonna get back at you when you least expect it.â She threatened, jokingly. She took one of the tissues and struggled to get the ice cream out of her nose. âOh definitely. Iâm pretty sure this was a scene in that movie Letters to Juliet. All thatâs left is for us to fight before reuniting in an airport.âÂ
âI cannae say Iâve ever heard of that film.â Rory admitted with a slight shrug of the shoulders. Then again, she simply didnât watch a lot of movies in the first place, not unless they were Disney or adaptations of her favorite books.Â
