I Owe Emily VanCamp an Apology
This is sort of an addendum to this post âEmily VanCamp Doesnât Deserve the Hate, butâŚ..I sort of get it.â
Iâd originally wrote that post in an effort to offer an observation (and one made from personal experience at that) on why I thought Emily was sort bringing some of the guff she was getting from fans onto herself. It was in no way meant to be hateful to her, although that seems to be how all of her adamant and staunch supporters interpreted it.
After having some private conversations though with some folks (Many of them anti-Sharon  and Anti-Staron folks), itâs occurred to me that I may have not taken some things into consideration when I formed my opinion.Â
Firstly, to clarify, I personally attended two of the CW press panels. And I was not familiar with Vancamp before this. Never heard of her or seen her in anything. And while I donât like Sharon, I am adult enough to know the difference between an actress and the character they play.
However, Emily (to me) came off as defensive and sort of angry at both events. She had weird chemistry with the other stars. Something seemed âoff.â. To someone who didnât know her, she came across as whiny and sort of self-righteous.Â
I went back and watched the videos of those interviews online again and my opinion of her during them does stand. You can choose not to agree with me on that take of her conduct, but please hear me out before you start writing me MORE hate mail. Because with some input from other folks, it occurred to me just why she might have come across that way.
She had to know at that point that her role in the movie was small and uneven. Regardless of if you love or hate Sharon, I think everyone agrees the story telling surround her was underdeveloped at best. Emily had to have known that there was likely going to be a strong negative response to that kiss. And if she had read the comics, as she claimed, she would also have known that not everyone is enamored with Sharon from the source material either. Â Â
And here was Marvel throwing her on a press tour to face that hate, likely without giving her the media training or support that she needed to really âhandleâ the questions. And with such a small part, very little to actually say about the character.Â
I do maintain that she should not have been on the press tour at all. And YES, I know it was a contractual obligation which I didnât make clear in my initial post. I know she was there because Marvel required it. Which frankly wasnât very fair of them. Because as someone pointed out to me, they essentially threw her to the wolves, and all by herself at that, as even the cast she was touring with didnât seem supportive of her.
The other observation I had of Emily that I wanted to mention was twice during autographing opportunities, I saw some people pull their stuff away from her when sheâd worked her way down the line to them. (Listen, as a fan I get it. You want the signatures you want.) And she was a little more forceful asking those people if they were sure they didnât want her autograph than I thought she should been. Even telling one within my ear shot, âYouâll regret it.âÂ
It had read, at the time, as very unprofessional to me. But again, with some reflection, I canât imagine it wasnât pleasant for her to have fans taking signatures from everyone else BUT her. (Even as those fans were entitled to not want her autograph.)Â
The more I think about what I observed (personally) of Emily, the more it occurs to me that the poor woman was sort of facing the perfect storm of not enough experience with the media, a rabid fandom, a poorly written part and the lack of professional support.Â
And while I would argue that I donât personally think sheâs been treated any worse (or asked anything more offensive) than any other MCU woman, I think she was set-up with the least amount of âtoolsâ to handle the situation.Â
All of that being said, I apologize to Emily, and anyone else I might have offended, if my original post came off as hateful to her. It certainly wasnât my intention. I was simply making a personal observation.Â
But with some thought and input from others, I can understand better why she might have come across poorly to a new and first time observer like myself, as besieged as she might have felt.Â
Because as I originally said, âShe doesnât deserve the hate.â But she may well have been set-up by Marvel to take the brunt of what they knew would likely be unpopular story telling. And she didnât deserve that either.Â
