It was during the spring when you got a letter from the Crown Prince himself, requesting your company. You had found it odd, cocking a thin eyebrow at the audacity. You, a mere girl from the bakery in the heart of Berlin, and the Crown Prince of both Prussia and Germany himself? A thought appeared in your mind that he might actually be insane as the rumors have said!
You closed the letter gently, placing it back on your coffee table, covered in a delicate and silky frilled tablecloth. It had been a gift from Wilhelm, having bought it for you after it caught your eye. You smiled at the memory, your lips curving up at the scene flashing in your headâ you insisting you pay him back while he coolly brushed off the purchase like it was nothing.
However, the thought that he might just be playing with your heart couldnât help but creep up and try and make your throat tighten, making you sigh with a frown. There was only one way to go from here, and that was to face him yourselfâ like the confident woman that he fell in love with.
On the weekend requested of you, you arrived, clad in a gown befitting the era. The bust was loose and flowing, with the gown ankle length with beautiful pleats. To complement the cream gown was a thin, lithe, gold necklace, a small pearl seated in the clutches of its clasp. Rather than you waiting for the prince, you found him waiting for you patiently. He looked up at his pocket watch with a roguish grin, his whole expression lighting up.
âIâve been waiting for you,â he breathed, his eyes raking across your body, almost as if he was already mentally undressing you in his mind. It made you squirm, your cheeks dusting red in slight thrill and discomfort. âYou look wonderful tonight.â
âThank you,â you whispered softly, unable to meet his gaze as the weight of his stare and the creeping embarrassment left you bereft and silent.
Wilhelm seemed to notice this and tilted your head up with a gentle touch, forcing you to look into those eyes just so alike to Prussian blue. âI would like to give you something. Just a⌠a gift. Yes. A gift.â His hand left your chin as he reached from behind him, pulling out a box. It was rather plain, compared to all the extravagant and decadent ones he seemed to reserve for you. He placed it firmly into your hand, then placing your other on top.
The box felt so lightâyet heavyâin your hands, cradling the box close to your chest. Wilhelm took a step back, as if to fully take you in. âOpen it,â he whispered, beckoning you to peer at what was inside. He gave a reassuring nod, hoping to soothe your shaking hands that seemed to pass downward to your whole body.
Still trembling, you opened the small box. Inside⌠was another box. The Crown Prince let out a laugh, his features looking boyish and all the more endearing to you. âYou have to open that one too,â he said mid-giggle, motioning for you to open the next one. His laughing definitely soothed your nerves, as you smiled along with him.
âWhat could you possibly be hiding under all these boxes?â you asked playfully, opening the next box. You were only met with another box. And another. Wilhelm only kept laughing harder as if it was the funniest joke he had seen or even heard. A pang of doubt and perhaps hurt throbbed through your heart. What if he had called you here, in the sunset, just to make fun of you with all these⌠these stupid boxes?!
You didnât have to wait very long before you were met with a beautiful ring. Then, you heard his deep, baritone voice talking to you. âCatherine Auspitz,â he said, covering your shaking hands with his own. âWill you marry me?â
You froze. What? He couldnât be serious. Not when he was the Crown Prince and you were⌠you.
Then, tears sprung to your eyes. âIf this is a joke, itâs not funny.â you whimpered, your tears falling onto the box. Before you could close it, he grabbed your hands, his expression solemn yet somehow full of affection.
âIâm certainly serious, Catherine,â he said with conviction, forcing the box open again. He slowly took out the ring, as if admiring it in the setting sun, before slipping it on your ring finger. âYou are officially my fiancĂŠe.â Wilhelm had spoken it into reality. And yet, the unspoken declaration was there. You meant more to him than the royal and imperial thrones of Prussia and Germany respectively.
âAnd I will show you why I love you more than anything in this world.â
