Happy left handers day to me and all other lefties! Tag a lefty and lets celebrate the Silver surfer syndrome 😂! This week's @goodtype prompt was about celebrating left handlers day and the challenge was to letter left hand problems. I was researching various problems and I found THIS! Yes! This problem even has a name 😂😂😂. Can't believe? Google it! 😂 I often compose my lettering work on tracing paper first, then transfer it on cardstocks. Tracing papers are really smooth and take up a lot of lead. After I'm done with the tracing paper, I always end up with lead on the back of my palm 🙄. Give more than you take. #LOVELEIGHINSPIRATIONCHALLENGE . I've been following @loveleighloops since last year, when I was trying to bring more uniformity and precision into my brush lettering. I first saw their video on YouTube which was about the basics of brush lettering, and that's when I understood the foundations of constructing letters 🤩. Ever since, I've been a fan of these two, because their teaching skills are just magnificent 😍! I'm very thankful to Jillian and Jordan, who have created such helpful videos. ☺ . Yes, I know this was supposed to be done with a pointed pen, but I currently don't have one 🤷🏻‍♀️. Instead, I chose hand lettering. Support your local artists 👩🏻‍🎨👨🏻‍🎨 . Submission for @secretwalls and @goodtype . The theme for this week was to letter "support your local artists" in black and white. TBH I'm not completely satisfied with the final result because I believe the lines should be kinda more crisp and clear (like vector) but I made on paper so 🤷🏻‍♀️. I really love this fluid swashy flourish-y kind of script (please someone tell me what is this exactly called😂) and I enjoyed doing it, but I'll be practicing more 😁 . Matrah Souq (formerly, Mutrah) is a very prominent place here in Oman, famous for all sorts of traditional Omani goods like clothing, perfumes, antiques, handicrafts, souvenirs, etc. Souq is an Arabic word, which means 'market/bazaar' and here's where all the Arab magic lies. ✨ . I love walking into the souq, check out what's new in the market, sniff and smell all varieties of ittar (perfume) and oud sticks, amidst the chaos, which literally makes me feel like I'm in the Arabian nights 🧞‍. . Omani men usually wear a kumma (Arabic word for cap) on their head (swipe for the photo), which exhibits piety. They have foliage and geometric design which is woven on it, and I tried putting that into the negative spaces of my work 😁 (swipe for the closer look!). I also tried incorporating the golden ambiance of the souq through bevel. . So many sources of inspiration here, taking a lot of notes 🧐🤓. At my hometown, Muscat :) I tried incorporating the colors that come into my mind the moment I think about Oman. Blue and green for the scenic ocean and date trees and orange for the extremity of summers here 🙄 (because yellow was just too light to be included 😂). #TUTORIAL - 30 WAYS TO FLOURISH ASCENDER AND DESCENDERS! I really love flourishing, doesn't matter if it's brush or hand lettering. It really makes your lettering look so elegant and unique, plus it's a really good way to cover up the negative spaces! So here I've grouped up 30 combinations (I'm sure there are sooo many more ways) of flourishing. I've started with descender because it's very easy to flourish as compared to ascender, but I came across this trick by @loveleighloops where they turn the paper around and it turns into ascenders! That's genius! 🤩🤯 I've also roughly made guides using pencil in a few complex flourishes in order to get its loops right! It's a great way if you're a beginner and you're in doubt about how you'll place such complicated curves! 🙂 Swipe for the process video.
