Josie's mom was just nineteen when she ended up pregnant with him. She wasn't in a relationship with his dad and despite trying to coparent in the beginning, his dad's visits became infrequent and eventually stopped all together. His dad passed away shortly before his fifth birthday and the only memories he has of him are small fragments. It's hard to miss someone you barely knew, but he does sometimes wonder if he and his dad would have ever had a relationship if he hadn't died.
His mom would get married when he was still in elementary school. She didn't really know herself well when she first had Josie but she knew she couldn't be with his dad romantically. So it suddenly made a lot of sense to her when she fell for a woman. Together they raised Josie and he considered them both to be his mom.
When Josie thinks about his childhood he can honestly say it was pretty laid back. His moms encouraged him to stay in touch with his creative side. He became a bit of a jack of all trades as a result, always jumping from one hobby to the next. They were supportive, perhaps not surprisingly, when he came out as pansexual in middle school. And though they were sad to see him go, they supported him when he decided to attend college out of state. He wanted to pursue a career in film.
His family owned a surf board shop in Hawaii and when he was fresh out of high school, they expanded it to another location in California. He took that opportunity to jump states and attend school in California while helping his family at their surf shop.
While in college he moved in with a fellow student named Henry. The two of them seemed to be from opposite worlds but somehow got along anyway. Josie was very open about his sexuality and when he later came out as non-binary, he was open about that too. Nearly all the films that he made for his classes were about LGBT topics. At first he just thought that Henry was some straight kid from Texas but after awhile he started to suspect that he might actually be gay. What could he do with that information, though? It's not like he was going to make him come out.
College ended and maybe they could have went their separate ways. Yet they remained roommates. He considers Henry to be his best friend. But sometimes he wishes they were more and lately, he suspects that Henry might feel the same way. Especially after taking a little peek at one of Henry's manuscripts. The story seems to hit a lot closer to home than one might suspect from a piece of supposed fiction.
He makes most of his income by offering surfing lessons. Sometimes he dabbles in being a lifeguard. He still makes documentaries and has even had one released on a streaming platform. He will sell paintings. Basically he thinks a 9-5 job would be a death sentence. Josie likes karaoke and recently that has evolved into drag. It's new for him, but he has been enjoying being able to express himself through drag.
