"this won't cost me my head, will it?" she raises a defiant eyebrow, crossing her arms across her chest. if there was one thing xiaoli had, it was opinions. on anything and everything. "alright, since you're curious: mugunghwa is stuffy and self righteous. they treat each other with what seems veiled hostility and the elders seem to favor appearances and reputation over their children and their happiness. they're my least favorite house. just boring people, really. I loathe boring people."

"magnolia? perhaps i'm biased but they are my favorite. accepting of others that aren't like them, more built on character and who you are, not who you were born to. still, they're bound by traditions like arranged marriages and other expectations, which has to be hard for those who fall under the gaze of their elders. they also don't seem too keen on marrying one of their seventy two heirs off to me, so, that automatically demotes them in the ranking but they're still above mugunghwa."

"gladiolus is probably the house i'm least familiar with. you can't go wrong with a manner in uniform, right?" an awkward laugh passes her lips as she claps her hands. "the idea of knights is romantic and all but surely they want for more? or maybe they really are as upright and loyal as they say, who really knows? as far as I'm concerned you can't trust them as far as you can throw them and i'm very weak and unathletic so take that as you will."

☕️ : you have a table at the sweetbrier tea house, but you only have room for three guests. who would you choose and why

she taps the tips of her chin with a perfectly manicured nail for a moment, a soft chuckle escaping her lips. "a prince, another prince, and perhaps the heir to a wondrous fortune, even if he isn't a prince?" the she keeps her sincere answer close to her chest, unable and unwilling to admit her vulnerability, she can't help but think she'd enjoy inviting her dad and brothers, if they'd even spare her the time these days.

📜 : are you on the nice list, or the naughty list?

"naturally the nice list, of course." a coy smile tugs at the corner of her lips. "what could I, the purest and most innocent soul in beonhwa, have possibly done to make it on to the naughty list, hm?"

🎁 : handmade gifts or store bought?

"well it all depends, now doesn't it? if you're buying for a very dear loved one only the best is enough. something from the golden flower with notes of amber, bergamot, and cinnamon would be coveted and the envy of everyone who caught even the smallest whiff!" she flashes a coy smile, the corner of her eyes creasing. "but for me? either will do. it's more about if the person remembers my tastes and interests and understands me. even the most expensive gift is boring and trite if given without concern of who's receiving it, don't you think?"

🌿 : one person you would like to get caught under the mistletoe with this crocus.

xiaoli quirks an eyebrow, amusement etched into her features. "shouldn't everyone be clamoring to have the honor of meeting me under the mistletoe?" soft laughter bubbles from her lips as she allows the question a moment to settle and give it thought. "there's never a lack of beautiful men and women in beonhwa who I would be glad to share a kiss with but..." her voice trails off as she thinks about the nobility of the three houses and the security they could bring her. "perhaps there's a lord or lady, an heir to a house, that will see me and fall madly in love at first sight. they'll meet me under the mistletoe and a kiss will seal the deal. they'll sweep me off my feet in a whirlwind romance so beautiful that poet will write about it for centuries!"

💫 : what is your most treasured family tradition during the crocus holidays?

"ah." her voice is soft, wistful, as she thinks of holidays gone by. prior to relocating to beonhwa her family had never taken part in celebrations for crocus. astrantia was the preferred time of year for festivals and thanking the gods within her tribe but being so young she adapted quickly and found herself anticipating the frosty festivities as if was all she had ever known.

"when my mother and grandmother were still alive, especially when I was little, we'd make a day of strolling through town square. stopping by every vendor stall anc seeing the seasonal goods, trying a different food or snack we had never heard of, buying something to commemorate our time together and how things had changed, had gotten better for our family. it was a day dedicated to enjoying one another and ensuring our bonds were as tight as ever."

a breath hitches in her chest and her voice falters as she feels the sting of tears prick her eyes. blinking them back furiously, she plasters a wide smile on her face. "it's been five years since I was last able to do such a thing. I wish I had seen those times and realized how precious they were in the moment. now...well now I hope to find a party to attend that had a strong wine or soju. when out of options, one must create their own fun,, hm?"
