one of the most stark differences between RTD and moffat is romance.
RTD is character driven, moffat is Bigass Concept driven, and this is crystal clear in the romances.
moffat: All About The Concept. river was trained since birth to kill the doctor and in the end she falls in love with him? wow!! that is a TWIST!! (let’s not even bloody talk about how we didn’t even get to see the relationship developed it was just shoved in your face)
even amy and rory… it’s like, rory waited TWO THOUSAND YEARS for her, and that’s supposed to be romantic but honestly? i just find it so unrealistic and ridiculous and just like moffat was Trying To Prove A Point.
now look at RTD. the main romance, obviously, is the doctor x rose and it’s one of my favourite relationships of tv history and here’s why:
because there was NO love at first sight. it was not Predestined, or anything like that; it was just some crazy old alien being like “oi, you wanna go and see all of time and space?” and rose was all, “yeah, why not!” and they were BEST MATES FIRST. they were just two best mates flyin around in their stolen TARDIS, having a laff, and then when the Stakes Were Raised rose kind of went - oh fuck. i love him. and the doctor went - oh fuck. i love her.
it was just a natural, mutual caring that can’t compete with doctor x river, when river essentially told ten on her FIRST EVER MEETING WITH HIM that she was his wife. it was no amy x rory where rory had to wait two fucking millennia to Prove Himself.
it was just two nerds, both of whom would raise HELL for the safety of the other in a way that was NEVER contrived like the Last Centurion arc was. just two nerds who were in love.
and quite frankly, i believe the doctor would NEVER fall in love with someone who would risk THE ENTIRETY OF SPACE AND TIME because she didn’t want to kill him, i.e. river. he would NOT love someone like that. that is reminiscent of gallifreyan mores, and the doctor would hate it. he would certainly not marry her because of it.
