this is not a drill i repeat, this is notĀ a drill
iām back, motherfuckers
does anyone maybe want a small quick thing?
Ocean eyes follow the gesture and he finds himself drowning in details. In string
dried sage, rosemary, terracotta pots blossoming with fat, flat leaves of basil and the tiny star-like sprouts of Thyme. He sees the way a sunburst of marigold brightens a pot painted sea-glass blue and he touches the golden orange petals gently. "Good for healing," he murmurs thoughtfully, hand dropping back to his side.
"I have less talent for these things than others, I am afraid," he admits. And then Ā softer still, a warm smile uncurling on strong lips, ābut Iāve always wanted to Ā learn. It is good know, for when you are stuck in a wood, battle-worn and bloody, Ā which plants might give you a fighting chance.ā His damp braids are left as they are, no more water able to be drawn from the tips. Thor gestures for Raleigh to lead the way, his smile spreading until he flashes a toothy grin, ānow, to the ale!ā
It's on the very tip of his tongue to offer to teach him, to show Thor what it was to have your hands in the earth, to carry it under your fingernails and in the lines of your palms. It's not like him, to want to open, to share, to teach. Of course, it wasn't every day that Raleigh had an Asgardian prince in his kitchen, either. There was...Ā something in the air around him, probably the something that brought others into his service, that beckoned them to follow into battle.
"-- Ale, right. Sorry, got a little sidetracked." Raleigh grins, looking at Thor through the fall of thick blonde hair that never seems to stay pushed back from his brow.
"We can take my brother's truck. It's kind of shitty, but he loves it, takes care of it." He motions for Thor to follow him, now that the rain that had heralded his arrival had seemed to let up a little bit.
too perfect not to share tbh

every morning, i wake up and forget just for a second that it happened. but once my eyes open, it buries me like a landslide of sharp, sad rocks. once my eyes open, iām heavy, like thereās to much gravity on my heart.

itās been years but he can still feel the desert heat caked into his skin, remember the lightning shocked into the weather-beaten ends of his hair. heād worn a bright, sunkissed smile and three beads on his dog tags. broad-chested, shoulders built to fill his flack jacket out to the seams and hearty pride to keep him sated, bucky had stomped off into the afghani war zone to fight for his country.
back in those days, heād been a king. Ā
now, he sits at a plastic table that wobbles under the weight of his elbow. vinyl creaks with rocking hips. Ā soft cotton rolls up to his bicep. itās been slimmed down by years of fatherhood and a different kind of lifestyle than he used to lead. Ā he no longer has a hundred press-ups to pump blood out from his heart every morning. Ā
his left sleeve pins up near his shoulder. Ā
today, the prosthetic rubbed his skin too pink, twisted just a little too sensitive. Ā
today, instead of dog tags with a pink bead for wife and daughter each, a blue bead for his son, he wears his wedding ring looped through a simple chain that bounces against his sternum when he walks. Ā
he sits across the table at the v.a., a pamphlet tapping beneath his fingertip, and looks back at the young soldier with crowās feet crinkling the corners of his eyes.Ā
"not easy cominā home, is it?"Ā
It's been nearly a month since Raleigh's been back. His brother's last-- and perhaps greatest-- gift to him had been Raleigh's ticket home. The last son of a family who had lost it's oldest and brightest child to an act of war. A set of three tags hang on a simple ball chain around his neck, all ending in the same last name', though one isn't like the others, listing a Becket, Yancy.
The desert sun still shows on his face, a mix of tanned skin and scattered freckles, and in his hair, a sandy yellow that look washed out beneath the faintly buzzing fluorescent lights. He's still cleaning sand out of his luggage, shaking it out of his clothes.
Raleigh had been sent home in a hurry, a confusing mess of grief and paperwork and red-eye flights that had landed him in a city that was now strange and strangely empty.
Coming home? He hadn't come home any more than Yancy had.
"-- No, it's really not." Even to his own ears, his voice sounds like a screen door on rusty hinges, unused. The pamphlet should have been enough to make himself scarce, but there was a look in the other soldier's eyes, something like what Raleigh might see if he bothered to look in a mirror.

WATER POURS INTO HIS HELMET AND HE THRASHES right out of his bunk, groaning in agony as he lays on the floor of their room, letting his head thunk lightly against the metal as he takes a moment to get his bearings. He has to gulp in air, feeling like he canāt get enough, like heās still drowning, deep beneath the thrashing surface where his kicking makes no differenceā- āRaleigh,ā he rasps out, reaching up blindly and grabbing for his brother on his own bunk, sure heās started to wake as wellā¦
-- He's up in an instant, a scant blessing of his inability to sleep. Yancy's voice is desperate, thin and choked as he calls out in the darkness that has that early morning, pre-dawn feel to it that Raleigh knows all too well.
"I'm here," he says gently, more gently than he would have thought himself capable of. Anything so soft as gentleness or compassion had been burned out of him a long time ago, and yet... Here he was, on his feet and reaching out to touch, to comfort. "I'm here, Yancy, it's okay. You just gotta breathe."
Natasha dips, knees bending as she picks up her staff from the mat. Her fingers curl as if they were made to weld this length of wood, wrist twisting easily as she spins the rod in her hands.
Once, the Beckets were a fearsome pair of Jaegar copilots. More than just good fighters, they were halves of a whole, and when they took on a Kaiju, they always came back victorious.Ā
Until they didnāt. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Until neither came back at all.
Feet sliding into position, she drops down her hips, thighs holding the weight of her body as she raises her staff to him. āIām ready.ā
-- God, he hopes he's ready.
They have an audience, a ring of people eager to see what she could do (--trained and disciplined in a way Raleigh had never been, even in his prime. Natasha was a tempered force of nature, Raleigh was a storm spread out over barren stretches of earth, stretched too thin--). He could feel their eyes on him as well, judging and evaluating, just as she was.
Raleigh makes the first move, lunging forward, staff held out. It's not a blind rush, but designed to look like one, a move to intimidate, to surprise, to seek out any weak points.
