let’s not forget that mentally ill women have always been treated like shit. hysteria was a legitimate diagnosis for centuries up until the early 20th century; hysteria is a term derived from the greek word for uterus, which implies that a because a woman’s uterus is the source of her illness, rather than psychological disorder. hysteria was treated with hysterectomies and/or sexual assault (doctors would use a vibrator on women under the guise of medicine). if that didn’t work women were placed in inhumane insane asylums, and they usually died there. even when there was an unpopular trend in diagnosing male hysteria, there were lengthy arguments about the difference between hysteria in the sexes, because men did not have a uterus and their symptoms were considered different than that of women—because of their lack of a uterus. the name for male hysteria changed rapidly, as doctors objected to the associated with a female disease. male hysteria was never treated with castration and never with sexual assault. male hysteria was rarely diagnosed and short-lived. women were diagnosed with hysteria frequently and the barbaric treatments were considered standard. women suffering from anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, or even simple stress were subjected to mutilation, sexual assault, and death in an insane asylum—all because they were born female. it was their sex that led doctors to treat them so. it didn’t matter who the woman was or what she did, all that mattered was that she was female and mentally ill.
