Shigaraki ⢠Development
Backstory
(Note: Tenko was Shigarakiâs childhood name.)
First things first: Shigarakiâs backstory is probably meant as an allegory. The house his father built is a microcosm of society, his father Kotaro represents people with power, Tenko represents people without it, and the other family members are bystanders. The power imbalance and communal emphasis on harmony enables Kotaro to take out his baggage on Tenko while Tenko is required to repress his. Resistance, even if itâs minor, causes Tenko to be shunned and beggared, as Kotaro locks Tenko out of the house in the backyard, in the dark, unfed, without even a roof over his head.
Edit: @codenamesazankaâ has an excellent reading of this allegory!
Theirs is a household that prioritizes unity and a façade of happy domesticity over Tenkoâs wellbeing. His mom and grandparents treat him gently, reject him kindly, and refuse to admit to him just how terribly Kotaro treats him. Though the three adults understand that Kotaro is the problem (they criticize him in private or cry out futile protests during an incident), they are unwilling to disrespect Kotaro to Tenkoâs face. Doing so would mean facing their victim and owning up to their own culpability, too.
So, throughout Shigarakiâs backstory, Horikoshi intersperses black panels with increasing grains of white. This references Shigarakiâs âwound in his heart.â
The first black panel appears when Tenko is crying to his mom, Nao, about his dad; the second appears when he is similarly comforted by his grandparents.

This is all absolutely wonderful.
Just one tiny speck of pure speculation about that last bit there... Maybe Shigaraki saw Twiceâs âwoundâ in being asked to submit to the one who wronged him (Overhaul humiliated him in betraying him after he let him in, as well as aggrieved him in killing one of his loved ones) and nurtured it in a similar way that All for One did, expecting he will âdo what he wantsâ? ... While also restricting his actions to âyou have to join Overhaul first.â
In a way that could be seen as using Twice to get revenge on Overhaul, the same way All for One manipulated Shigaraki, but in reality... Shigaraki believes being taught to do what he wants (destroy, revenge) saved, or at least helped, him. (And restricting himself in learning not to cry was a necessary step, the same as Twice having to work for Overhaul.) Especially with the way he revealed his own face, with a genuine smile and words of camaraderie, his intent is to benefit the both of them, who have the same goal and needs in this case. There is no need to tell him what to do next. He trusts Twice to be who he is.
Just a thought.

Learning control, and the lack of it. (Spoiler-free except for Shigarakiâs real name.) Â
Content Warning: No death or violence, but does contain calculated child neglect and All For One being supportive about exactly the kinds of things youâd expect him to be supportive about. Â

There was a whistle of amusement as he popped a piece of chocolate into his mouth, holding it in his cheek as he spoke. âSomeoneâs getting daring â you really mean these werenât just for me? Iâm hurt.â If they were going to play this game, he could play all day. âHow long did it take you to make all of these? You really went all out, didnât you?â For the whole class? Shimura had a fragile heart and he was flashing it on his sleeve.
âIt was my sisterâs idea; I made them with her.â In honesty, he would have been lost without her instruction. Who knew making chocolate fudge was so complicated? At least her extracurricular culinary classes that Father insisted on were paying off in some way.
âI guess we got a little carried away...â he eyed the differing experimental designs on each piece, for each classmate. âBut itâs not like it was a chore or anything. We just got creative.â
Not forgetting the otherâs initial âgrievanceâ, Tenko turned it back around on him now with a simple question. âSo what did you get me?â He hadnât done this expecting anything, but if Todoroki was going to (fake) complain, heâd be held to the same (fake) standards. All in fun--that was probably obvious.

âI got hungry, and it gave me an idea.â Shimura cast the other a sheepish grin. He had to admit, though, he thought they turned out well. Missing limbs, plus green skin outline, ragged clothing, and a little bit of guts as icing details... Maybe it wasnât as traditionally festive, but he had fun along the way. Got to snack and test out the taste before decorating them, two birds with one stone.
âI didnât bite off of them directly, so you can still have one if you want.â

âNot going to deny the rest?â That was enough to satisfy him. He was kind of surprised he was really going to let all of that slide so easily â not even a little bite? âTo some extent I guess realism is kind of joyless. Are you really going to try and tell me it isnât?â Todoroki wasnât going to argue that he preferred living in fairytales or whatnot with his head in the clouds but the faces of reality were often not very pretty. Did Shimura have a different view?
âThe rest are subjective, and denying them would probably just make you more convinced.â It was like accusing him of being contrary; thereâd be no way to protest without losing credibility. Todoroki probably just wanted him to get defensive anyway.
Shimura gave a snort at the otherâs reply, teasing wryly. âWell, that says a lot about your life, doesnât it. Now whoâs being emo?â Still...it was actually a legitimate question, and Tenko gave it a moment of serious thought. Realism wasnât the opposite of optimism; that was his stance from the start. But could he really deny real life gets pretty bleak...?
âRealism...is what it is. Itâs the baseline. Everything else is measured by its difference from reality, and it can go both ways. Optimism is seeing things as better than they are, and pessimism is seeing them worse. So doesnât that mean realism has some of everything? How would we even know what joy felt like if it wasnât a part of reality?â
He understood fantasy and its diversion from the mundane as a purpose of escape, of course. He couldnât deny indulging in that pastime himself; he enjoyed it quite a lot. So what was the difference? It wasnât like he hated happy endings altogether, but why did the saccharine sappy epilogues in particular tend to bother him at times?
â...Stories that donât include both sides are just lies, and whatever you feel from their endings is...fake. It just feels fake.â He didnât think he was explaining well...
Tomura deliberately takes the string with all two working fingers of his left hand, sending the balloon, untethered, up to who-knows-where. Opens the tacky card with his other hand.
âWhat, no money?â Jokes.
âI just bought Animal Crossing, and âDetneratâ ordered in some fancy cake.â Shigaraki knows Re-Destro has a name--and a code name, obviously--but âDetneratâ is about the level at which he cares on the average day. âThat guy missed his calling as a concierge.â
Itâs Tomuraâs birthday today. ...Is he wearing a tiara?
Feel free to send birthday-related asks or starters if you so desire!
If you donât think a villain who has been exposed to the seedy underbelly of society since childhood, who is also an avid internet-goer, doesnât know the ins and outs of sex, youâd be wrong.
If you think that implies he has any personal experience with physical intimacy to speak of youâd also be wrong.
