“It’s alright, Detective Kennex. I’ve been...” she'd been a goddamned wreck is what she had been. Utterly out of her mind with grief. She’d thrown herself into too much work to keep from being at his side the entire time. After a pause, she finally replied. “I’ve been okay. We’ve been worried about you.”

It was late the evening, just an hour before visiting hours were over when Valerie had finally been able to sneak in to see him. Dark rings were around her eyes and her usually crisp outfit was dinged from a long day of working.

John opened his eyes, damn, the alarm had faded in even more now and it was blaring in his ears. He rolled over and one slap to the table knocked it into snooze and he groaned as he rolled back over.

It was another day for work, but he was more than ready to go since they’d gotten a big lead on insyndicate and finally it was narrowing down to where they would start acting rather than planning it out.

Anna was gone, having left only a day or two ago for vacation leaving John alone in his apartment.

O… except for one thing.

He rolled over with with a smile, his eyes fell to the woman lying at his side, he wasn’t sure if the alarm or his own actions had woke her up but either way it was time for both of them to get ready to leave.

“Good Morning, Val.” He said softly, a hand came up to push a long brown lock out of her face.

This had been going on for quite some time. It went unspoken. Sure they would see each other at work throughout the day but it wasn’t until lunch dates, possibly supper, and later at nights when Anna was out that they found themselves together even more. Sure John loved Anna, but-… he’d loved Valerie Stahl even more… even longer. He just hadn’t found a way to tell her yet… in fact he didn’t know how to explain his feelings to either one of them.

At the hand in her hair, she smiled and gave a soft, contented hum. “Good morning, Johnny,” she cooed sweetly. Only when they were alone did she use that affectionate form of his name and it wasn’t that often. Leaning upward, she gave him a soft kiss. It was clear that she was truly in love with him, but she never said the words.
