It’s Labor Day weekend.

My parents, who haven’t come up since July4th, were supposed to come up today.

I made the mistake of telling Kam and he was so excited because Nani & Nana are like his most favorite people in the world.

& then of course, 1pm rolls around and my moms like “we’re just gonna come tomorrow” like it’s no big deal that her grandson woke up at 7am waiting for their arrival. Not to mention that my parents work m-f so they only ever stay for like 8 hours in a weekend. I thought she would take advantage of being off on Monday but I guess not.

It’s EXHAUSTING like literally exhausting trying to make people like you/love you. I don’t do this with anyone else besides my immediate family but like damn. My Kam only has me and his dad. On a regular basis. He doesn’t have other family and I regret not giving him a sibling so he didn’t feel the loneliness too. SIGH. I wish my family would stop using the distance and busyness excuse. I live 2 hours away and their definition of busy is cleaning out the garage every weekend that still is messy as shit after 30 years worth of weekend cleanings. 🤬🤬🤬

You can really tell who’s never experienced poverty and food insecurity when it comes to discussions around food costs and how unhealthy food is cheaper. Some fucker always comes in with the price of like… lettuce or… apples. And it’s like yeah bitch but can you work an 11 hour shift after eating some salad and an apple!?! Find me something cheaper, and more filling than the broke ass staples of boxed mac and cheese, hot dogs, noodles, bread, beans, and rice. I’ll wait.

It also ignores the mental toll that poverty takes like maybe your home made veggie filled recipe isn’t crazy expensive but it also involves prep time and cooking time and organization in terms of fresh food that a lotta poor people can’t manage.

Not to mention if you can only afford to get to the store once every couple weeks via bus or cab then you can’t keep fresh veg on deck.

But ya know.. poor people are just dumb and lazy.

there will be a moment when you realize you are more grown up than your parents are. this is the loss of childhood, my love. it is when you’re standing in the kitchen and one of your parents is screaming about something and you recognize: you will let them win the fight not because you are wrong, but simply because you know that they will keep shouting unless you drop the subject. you expect them to have childish understandings of things. they will hold onto their concept of the world as if it was not a changing thing. they must be right, and they must be somehow more right than you, always, in everything. their idea of control is so necessary to who they are that you just let it go.

this is the moment. you are 11 or 17 or 21. and you realize that you’re more mature than they ever were.

and in some odd, sad way, this frees you. where they have stagnated, you continue.
