As the heading says I did indeed meet Askeladd’s Netflix Dub VA, Kirk Thornton! Honestly right now I am in shock that this actually happened as it was earlier today. The story is that I live in an area where there is almost no conventions ever around and if there is there’s no one I ever have interest in meeting.

This time however I saw that Kirk Thornton was coming to a convention only a few hours from my location! I convinced my mom to come with me and we drove on down. An after stopping who knows how many times we arrived. The con was very dead so me and mom were easily able to get into his line and were able to explore artist alley rather fast! Kirk was so nice and talked to me for quite a while about Askeladd of course. As well as Vinland Saga in general and how he really enjoyed working on the project and playing Askeladd!

You see... Ryan also voiced for Olmar in the Netflix dub. Of course, no hate to the other VAs who have voice Olmar (such as the original Japanese or the Crunchyroll dub) but the way that Ryan voiced Olmar has basically become my all time favorite depiction of him.

I love Olmar's facial expressions as he's very over the top with his emotions but it takes a voice performance that is equally over the top for it to work well. Ryan does it perfectly; there are points in the dub where it sounds like the voice is being strained. Hearing Olmar get so angry that it sounds physically painful on the throat... like that makes the anger sound so much more real. Ryan also has a habit of getting angry enough in his performance that it sounds like the character he's voicing has a growling tic to their voice. Denji is a good example as he seems to be growling a lot. Of course it works given he's not fully human so the voice tics play into the character. But I think that's such a cool idea for Olmar that he accidentally starts to growl like an animal when he's getting too overwhelmed.

I already wrote to Ryan on his twitter account about how much I loved his performance as Olmar... and he even wrote back to me and thanked me! So that makes me even more excited to one day meet him in person and have him sign something. And I'm sure he would enjoy that. As I said, he's more well known for being Denji's VA... but to me, I remember him for a small role that most folks never paid attention to.

Ryan isn't remembered for playing Olmar. But I remember him.
