“Loyalty is one of my currencies. Worth much more than money or gold in my view.” Without trust and loyal people to push an empire what good could it possibly do to have one? Corvus instills loyalty in all who work for him. Anyone who is discovered to cease upholding that oath seeks a bitter end. No longer among the land of the living. How many skulls has Corvus DeVille truly built his throne upon? Too many to count.

He watched her carefully. While his expression remained neutral, Corvus always observed with a peculiar method of thought. Everyone shows their cards in one way. If not now they will later. “You do a favor, any favor I ask when the time comes, I will see no one bothers you again.”

“Wait a second,” Landon interrupted her, still leaning in close to keep their discussion more private. “Your baby… are you - are you talking about Lana?” Is this her mother? No way. How is that possible? Anybody could throw out bits of info to get him to slip up. Say something he shouldn’t. Talk a little too much to the wrong person and all sorts of bad can come his way. Not only his way but the people he cares about. That’s not happening.

“So you know Sarah. Well, if you did you’ll know she’s a child abuser that I called CPS on. So unless you tell me exactly who you are and what you mean I’m not saying a thing about anybody.” Whether he realized it or not Landon was in full protective dad mode.

"I didn't want her to grow up in that life. Sarah was a relative who said yes to taking custody. I didn't have a say. As far as anyone knows I'm dead too. It was the only way out. Sarah wasn't always bad. A little head underwater maybe, about being handed a baby to care for, but not abusive. That is until more recently, I don't know how long it's been going on or how bad it gets, truthfully. I only found out when I came back to the city for the first time in years. Last I saw my baby she was still in diapers. I couldn't step in or say anything, I'm not supposed to be there. Not supposed to be alive. But I'm glad someone else did make the call."

People were mean. Even as young as he was, Mayson already learned that very well. But he never imagined just how cruel some people could be. That was until someone had grabbed him when he went out to play one day. How long ago was that? The hellish days blended together.

The men did different things each for his own pleasures. One had a knife, another would treat him as a punching bag, and the last one broke some of the boy’s fingers. Why? Why? Why? They were all creeps in their words and handling as well. Scummy and grimy. Humans were capable of some evil shit.

The fresh wounds still stung and bled, and tears flowed down his cheeks. Deep red marks lined and circled his wrists from where the ropes had held him. His captures lay unconscious on the floor.

He didn’t fully process the fact that someone had saved him or what they had said. Huh? He was safe now? It was over? This woman saved him? But why?

It was okay now. She took care of them. The special treatment. They wouldn't be doing this again, or much of anything for that matter. The dead weren't known for their hobbies and scheming.

Random bar encounters are usually not his speed. Who knows what sort of winos crawl through. The type of bars he's been in? Varies from classy to dive. Honestly this is the last one he'd choose but this wasn't exactly by choice. The journalist had a little lead on this mystery caller. Maybe this will finally shed some light. Getting to the bottom of things is usually his thing.

He glanced around as he went up to sit directly at the bar. Ordering his usual shot of Tequila, Landon waited, expecting someone to show themselves. Sure enough there is a person near the end of the bar. A woman he isn't familiar with seemed to be paying attention to him.

“You run in curious circles, Lily.” The man emphasized her name. Adding a chance to gain something is very smart of her. She offers a warning. Out of good nature? Or merely to protect herself?

Corvus glanced over to his head of security. George Preston watched as they spoke. Ever persistent in maintaining a peaceful atmosphere, Scarlet Lunge is known for its classy reputation. Trouble always finds a way pushed outside. If at an extreme they enter the back door and never exit. What threshold shall Lily Hinton cross?

“Swift is my nature, MS HINTON.” Opting for formalities now, he sat back, shifting his hand from atop his cane to pick up a glass of red wine. No matter where it is his preferred indulgence. Rich. Expensive. “Though as I am a man of business I require something in return for your plea of safety. Problems go away without a trace by my hand. Always for a price of course.”

A business forerunner of her own sort. She could push heads and cross lines but she recognized the dangers as she did it. What was her own price? Everyone had one. A line of personal well being they dare not disturb, a task they could never agree to, a final financial sum too much to deal out. Fatal all in their own right. It's all in a days work was it not? At least in the way she was raised to handle things.

Everything is telling him not to engage in this. He should alert someone. Maybe ask the police himself about strange phone calls with allusions to law enforcement being unable to help. Sensible thinking sure. If sense followed journalists. He is a rarer breed. A journal guy with a camera. He’s done some crazy things to get the perfect shot. It all goes hand in hand with the writing. What’s a little mystery then? Could it really be bad news? Probably. Knowing his luck.

Landon read over the short messages a few more times. Clearly they knew who he is. Can’t exactly say it’s a wrong number now can he? Unknown strangers asking him specifically for help is never a good sign. Anything can go wrong.

[L. Wynter] I’m not promising anything until you give me some info [L. Wynter] 1. how did you get my # [L. Wynter] 2. who are you? [L. Wynter] If you don’t tell me your game I WILL get the cops involved.

[Unknown] I have many contacts in the city. I can get what I want.

[Unknown] That was not a threat or anything just the truth.

There was a pause between the next message as Lilly debated what to say. She didn't have to worry if he did contact the police. She has ways of dealing with that. They would not find her. But she wanted to talk to him, and him on high alert with the authorities was not going to help.

[Unknown] I'm just a mother who's been put in a hard place.

[Unknown] There is no game. Curtis keeps fucking up.

[Unknown] All I want to know is what is your motive? Do you truly mean well with the girl?

bringing up a child wasn't going to do anything to help her case, she knew. It would only raise suspicions and alarm if anything. She knew this. But she didn't have anything else to say. That was the truth. This was her purpose.

A few minutes later one last text comes through.

Lana tilted her head in even more confusion. What? But then again, Miss Sarah knew a lot of people, many of them Lana didn’t know. Some of them weren’t so nice. But this woman seemed different than all of them. She wasn’t like the rowdy men Sarah had over most weekends.

“This is bullshit!”

“This is not what it looks like.”

“This doesn’t make any sense.”

“This makes me want to punch you in the face.”

“This is so stupid.”

“This was a shitty idea.”

“This is not what I wanted.”

“This is so disgusting!”

“This is really pissing me off!”

“This is my jam!”

“This wasn’t my fault.”

“This is just what I needed.”

“This sounds like a bad idea.”

“This is so fucked up!”

“This is the best I could do.”

“This was good.”

“This is not my problem.”

“This looks painful.”

“This is beautiful!”

"Do you know how important this is?" Jade had plenty to deal with when it comes to her job. Stress is situational. Depending on what sort of case she's involved with it can be the simplest or cause a lot of grief. At times she wonders how much blood she can wade through before it all goes numb. That's what she signed up for. she knew going in things wouldn't always be minor grievances. Lately, though, she's been embroiled in following up on forensics in what appears to be a connected series of murders.

She switched her phone from one ear to the other, moving through her apartment at a steady pace. Occupied with the voice of a colleague, Jade gave it plenty of thought. "I know. I know I should be getting rest but I can't stop thinking of this. DNA can only get me so far and the investigators need those results in the lab before they can even officially call this a serial matter. That's why I brought the data home on my thumb drive." Information is power. Connecting the dots will tell a story and if there's one killer with multiple victims they're dealing with the classic case of a serial killer. No going back from that.

She just hoped this worked out well, she would hate to have any loose ends or messes laying around. There was always a factor of risk and accountability in plans like these. The situation was always changing. But loose ends and messes is what drove the paranoid criminal to hire her in the first place. They need not make a cycle of this. For everyone's sake.

Lilly had thought out this plan as best as she could. Accounting for the uncertainty that was the always present human factor, running through her main plan as well as several backup plans. Plan B and plan C were always important to have. An ability to think quickly and work on the fly was necessary as well.

She researched and gathered information on the target, made herself her own file on this Jade person, and learned the ins and outs as best as she could. She had disposed of any evidence of those notes before coming here, in case it didn't go well. Here's hoping for smooth sailing.

With everything covered, she finally stood at the door of Jade Winthrope. Just the first stop in a few planned pleasantry stops. It was going to be a long work week. Lilly was going to need a drink after this.

When the door opened she shoved her left foot through the threshold and planted her bulky steel-toed boot firmly in the woman's apartment. The rest of her didn't maintain any boundaries either as she swiftly moved to invade the other's personal bubble.
