the pool of blood beneath her was growing as her assassination attempt on the tsar’s life was unsuccessful. but he had gotten his due in return, wounding her greatly on her side. she had just finished fending off someone coming after her to kill her. but the viking princess was not going to let them get the best of her…. but it didn’t help her wound, only worsening it. “i’m sorry…” she looked up at her brother. “i failed…. and i won’t go to valhalla with you it seems…”

the   war   cry   that   tears   from   his   throat   is   𝒃𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒅 - 𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒅𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈   ,      𝙱𝙾𝙽𝙴 - 𝙲𝙷𝙸𝙻𝙻𝙸𝙽𝙶      enough   to   give   most   of   their   enemies   pause   and   provide   an   opening   for   ulf   to   chop   and   slice  and   hack   his   way   to   his   sister’s   side   .      ❛❛      you’re   right   about   one   thing   ,      systur   ,      ❜❜      ulf’s   free   arm   comes   to   wrap   around   her   then   ,      offering   support   while   the   press   of   his   palm   is   insistent   against   the   gash   on   her   side      ;      viscous   fluids   coating   his   hand   in   a   slippery   substance   that   threatens   to   spill   between   the   cracks   in   his   fingers   .      ❛❛      neither   of   us   will   be   welcomed   into   odin’s   hall      -----      not   before   we   remind   these   russians   why   it   is   they   fear   us   .      ❜❜

nimble fingers was swiftly translated to sticky fingers in anton’s mind ( from what whispers he’d heard of the — scandinavian’s, that seemed to be a favored activity of choice ). and while he really shouldn’t have risen to the bait ( austria was suffering enough from their lack of coin, anton ought to have known better than to make matters worse ), it seemed he simply couldn’t stop himself. keeping his gaze locked on the other mans, he sat back down. “i much prefer to bond in battle, but what’s a game of cards or two?” he muttered after a moment, gesturing to one of the tables empty seats. “you have some confidence in your abilities. we may as well test to see if your word holds true.” 

❛❛      i’m   happy   to   cross   blades   ,      if   such   is   your   wish   .      ❜❜      lips   stretch   thin   baring   pearly   whites      &      there’s   something       𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐃      in   the  husk   of   a   boyish   chortle   that   follows   .      ulf’s   grin   has   always   been   a   𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍   thing   .      simultaneously   predatory      &      cautionary      :      watch   your   step   lest   you   get   caught   in   his   maw   .      ❛❛      but   to   humiliate   my   future   kin   so   thoroughly      -----       even   i   am   not   so   cruel   .      in   cards   at   least   you   might   stand   some   chance   .      ❜❜      when   ulf   at   last   moves   to   claim   the   vacant   seat   opposite   anton   selection   is   seemingly   innocuous   enough   but   its   no   accident   he’s   perched   where   piercing   gaze   can   maintain   a   careful   assessment   even   behind   cards   .      anton   is   an   unknown   variable   .      farce   aside   ulf   isn’t   so   naïve   as   to   underestimate   him   .      ❛❛      in   fact   ,      you   may   choose   our   game   .      consider   it   a   token   of   my   good   faith   ,      mágur   .      ❜❜      despite   pleasant   tones   the   way   his   tongue   curls   to   choke   out   the   moniker   is   sour      -----      distasteful   .

The fire raging behind the Prince’s eyes was evident, and Alistair was most certainly not immune to the waves of pure heat obviously radiating from the other man. Despite appearances, the Crown Prince was neither stupid nor foolish, and in fact remained entirely aware both of precisely what he was doing, and the risk involved within it. Though he did not lack in height, Alistair would never have been described as a man with any substance to his muscular structure. Though he partook in exercises which would keep him alert and healthy, heavy lifting and the like had never proven to provide any use or enjoyment. Still, his eyes remained locked onto Ulf’s, his expression outwardly present, yet with a cloaked determination and near-plain stubbornness providing the unspoken force behind his small smile. Alistair did not waver, and he did not back down. 

The Prince’s snarl came, and for an incredibly brief moment, Alistair found himself questioning whether or not he truly should have gotten himself involved. His presence in the middle of situations which might otherwise not have concerned him was fairly common, much to the chagrin of his mother, and much to his own puzzlement. Still, despite all the other apparent truths about himself, Alistair was at peace with his innate desire to assist others. It was a quality he’d heard  might easily make him a weak and unsteady ruler. It was also a quality he’d heard would prove to be his greatest asset. Before the Crown Prince was able to further process his second-guessings, the Nordic Prince seemed to back off just a bit, his demeanor not changing dramatically and yet offering acknowledgment of Alistair’s question. Smiling, he turned, motioning to a nearby pitcher. “Just there, for starters. However, if you’d grant me the grace of your time, Your Highness, I’m certain we can suss out a wider selection.”

snarl   becomes   overexaggerated   sneer   as   ulf   shifts   to   eye   the   jug   with   disdain   .      syrupy   contents   yet   left   a   thick   aftertaste   coating   throat      &      tongue   alike      (      is   accustomed   to   a   corrosive   tango   BLAZING   a   path   down   gullet   ,      not   a   minute   tickling   in   the   back   of   his   throat      )      that   lacked   a   distinct   fire   spreading   and   warming   his   gut   .      had   partaken   of   it   earlier   ,      when   upon   entering   the   hall   a   bumbling   servant   with   shaky   hands   had   offered   him   a   glass   ,      and   ulf   had   subsequently   spat   it   back   out         much   to   said   servant’s   chagrin   and   his   own   amusement   .       ❛❛      a   wider   selection      .   .   .      ❜❜      repetition   is   a   slow   drawl   as   icy   hues   burn   a   frigid   path   around   the   still   buzzing   room   before   an   idea   sparks   in   his   mind   .

she could still vividly recall the conversation they’d had mere hours earlier — how enthralled he’d been by the mere thought of her talent. at the time, she’d made an empty threat and prayed she never would have to do something so pointless. but the moment the chaos had erupted and people had seemingly stopped caring about how friendly their seat mate had been only minute earlier, ece had found herself tugging forth her talent and drawing years ( and sometimes entire lifetimes ) from anyone who tried getting to close.

a sword had nicked her arm, drawing forth a rather surprised shout ( the fingers of the opposite hand moving to press down on the flow of blood as she spun to face the assailant ). whoever they’d been ( and whether the hit had been intentional or not ) would not be something she discovered; the body crumpling to the ground unmoving. blue orbs flickered to take in the man now before her, her gaze cautious. “if you raise talent or sword against me, i will kill you.”

its   an      INTRINSIC   TUNE      this   which   beats   a   brisk   rhythm   of   his   heart      ;      the   sing   of   steel      parried      &      clashing      and   the   forlorn   cries   of   the   defeated   .      tendon   and   muscles   hum   their   strenuous   melody   with   each   reverberating   catch   of   his   axe   that   mercilessly   bites   ,      sinking   into   its   mark   .      with   each   forceful   dislodge   that   rips   and   tears   its   own   harmony   from   his   victims   to   join   the   endless   echoing   cries   of   their   fallen   brethren   .      just   as   he   has   heard   mad   ravings   claiming   to   find   so - called   sin   purified   in   still   waters   ,      ulf   thinks   himself   cleansed   in   a   spray   of   red   .      can   sense   the   valkyries   circling   above   ,      can   feel   odin’s   presence   like   a   guiding   beacon      :      warm      &      encouraging   ,      like   a   ray   of   sunlight   trickling   through   mosaic   windows   ,      prompting   a       𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭    𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐫      as   he   continues   on      searching   for   other   offerings   to   sate   a   bloodthirsty   appetite      (      if   cruelty   is   linked   to   godliness   then   there   must   be   an   inkling   of   divinity   flowing   through   his   veins      )      ulf   is   about   to   claim   another   with   a   hurl   of   his   hand   axe   when   the   body   crumples   lifeless   before   him   unveiling   the   she - ottoman   .

𝟶𝟶𝟷 .    𝙳𝙴𝚂𝙲𝚁𝙸𝙱𝙴   𝚃𝙷𝙴𝙸𝚁   𝙹𝙾𝚄𝚁𝙽𝙴𝚈   𝚃𝙾   𝚅𝙴𝚁𝚂𝙰𝙸𝙻𝙻𝙴𝚂   .

much   of   the   journey   was   spent   on   a   ship   which   suited   ulf   fine   ,      scandinavians   were   born   and   bred   with   land   and   sea   legs   .      rocky   waters   were   the   majority   of   the   view   though   on   occasion   said   waters   did   pull   them   close   enough   to   shore   to   witness   the   devastation   left   in   the   wake   of   war   .      nothing   that   ulf   hadn’t   encountered   first   hand   ,      having   been   on   the   front   lines   at   every   given   opportunity   .      even   the   aftermath   of   a   battle   is   enough   to   get   his   heart   racing   ,      his   blood   pumping   .      ever   eager   for   just   one   more   til   the   valkyries   called   him   home   .

in   truth   ,      ulf   barely   spared   the   portrait   a   passing   glance   before   discarding   it   underfoot   .      he   thinks   the   entire   thing   to   be   a   ruse   ,      not   for   everyone   of   course   but   for   his   family   he   believes   it   to   be   a   means   of   reclaiming   their   stolen   kin   and   nothing   more      ;      expecting   to   return   home   shortly   .      he   has   no   want   nor   need   of   peace   or   alliances   .      the   state   of   the   world   suits   him   as   is   and   viking   blood   is   best   left   untainted   .
