I find it interesting how Basil has no confirmed family or loved ones outside of Lord Henry's friendship
Following this with the idea that he's the only religious character as well, we can assume that he wouldn't know much about "loving." Even his relationship with his father seems to be strained(?).
Naturally, you could say he can only love in worship, as it's the only way he knows how to love. This could explain or put some foreground to why he views Dorian as an idol to praise.
