So, in terms of Gao Feng and Liu Er, she doesn’t hate him. Grief changes people. It can shatter already strained relationships, friendships, and family. Or it can bring them together. Yinuo (the original character introduced to be a mother figure for Liu Er) was quite literally the glue holding the family together. Without her, Liu Er became self righteously angry at the world and everything in it. Because of that, he went dark. He lashed out at everyone. Because there’s no good time for a parent to pass, it made things difficult for him to handle getting older.

So, this is an excellent question. In truth, I don’t think Ba, Ma, Beng and Liu don’t hate the Tang monk for the necessity of the crown. The thing is, though they’re animals, they do understand that once gods get involved, there’s very little they can do to go against that. WuKong is not a ‘monkey’ like them, even if he bears their visage. He’s special in a way that they knew they weren’t able to really intervene on his behalf.

So: Ba and Ma were relatively supportive! Typical relationship between monkeys and their child. Ma is usually very patient. Ba is a bit of the fun parent and the prime example of: Do what I say, not as I do. Mainly because I picture him as the more chaotic of the two. And mainly because Ma is physically larger than him, so she’s usually more relaxed as Ba (and later WuKong) would be chaos gremlins.

So with the current way I write them: Ba and Ma are adoptive parents to WuKong. Beng is Ba’s twin, and Liu is the aunt! In the books: Ba, Ma, Beng and Liu are just his advisors. So I took some creative liberties to expand that a bit!

We’ve got an update!

I’ve also had a lot of personal decisions to make about looking for relationships and defining myself as a person, so that’s just been there too. I’ve been more comfortable coming out to people around me, so they know I’m asexual (but I think they’re registering it as Bi because I joked about marrying a friend, which tbh is fair and I don’t mind either way). And it’s been received exceptionally.
