Ladies and gentlemen, sometimes it is incorrect to use "I." The trick is to remove the other person and check if "me," "I," or any other pronoun is the correct word to use. Example: And here is a picture of my partner and I. CHECK: And here is a picture of I. (INCORRECT) REVISED: And here is a picture of my partner and me. Him and Lucy went biking. CHECK: Him went biking. (INCORRECT) REVISED: He and Lucy went biking. Priya gave Taylor and I several pens. CHECK: Priya gave I several pens. Earlier this week, I did an activity with my 5th and 6th graders about the power of punctuation. I showed the following sentence and asked them to discuss its meaning: "A woman, without her man, is nothing." Then I showed the second sentence right below and we discussed ITS meaning: "A woman: without her, man is nothing." I introduced Lynne Truss and the panda joke that was used for one of her books, then proceeded to show them a letter I wrote twice. Both letters use the same words in the same order, but each one was punctuated differently. After I read each one out loud, we discussed how the meaning changed because of the punctuations used. I challenged them to write at least one sentence twice, copied word for word, and punctuate it differently so that the meaning changes. Many got it and gave examples, such as, "Let's eat, kids! vs. Let's eat kids!" "Thank you for being so helpful vs. Thank you for being so 'helpful.'" Some even went above and beyond with a letter of their own. I have two copies of the same novel: its first edition and as an anthology of the first three novels in the series. If I had the time (and/or patience), I would go back and forth to see if any scenes, descriptions, or dialogues were changed between the two. Earlier today, I did an activity I read about with my sixth-grade students. Each person was given a piece of blank paper. I instructed students to crumple one corner of the paper, straighten it, then crumple it again. Then they had to crumple another corner, then another, then a fourth. Afterward, they crumpled the entire paper. After that, they had to restore the paper to its original form. Try as they might, they agreed it wasn't possible to restore the paper to its original form after crumpling it so much. Several of my students asked why we were crumpling paper and I responded, "Pretend this piece of paper is a person. When someone makes a teasing or mean comment to or about that person, he or she can feel upset. Their feelings are damaged or hurt, much like damaging a piece of paper. What happens when another person making a mean comment or this person hears the same mean comment every day? Their feelings continue to get hurt. Now let's say the one saying the mean comments apologizes, like trying to straighten the paper after choosing to crumple it. Even if you say sorry a million times, the damage has been done." At the end, I asked students to use the very paper they crumpled to write down their thoughts and what they learned from this activity. I hope this lesson sticks with them #powerOfWords #mindfulness
