The man looked up, raising a brow and lowering his novel. “Yes?” He asked, his voice gentle. Alfred’s southern accent always made his ears perked up. The American leaned against the wall, putting his hands in his pockets. 

“So, this weekend, I gotta go away for work. Go visit a bunch of my fathers ranches. Ya’ think you’d be okay by yourself?” He asked, raising a brow. This would be the first time Alfred would leave the omega by himself overnight. There’s a tingle of guilt in his chest for having to do so, but he desperate for spa. He’d never forgive himself if he crossed a line with Ivan. 

Ivan blinked, surprised by the question. He hadn’t thought about Alfred leaving, he’s grown accustomed to his presence. An entire weekend alone? He should find it appealing. To have the entire house to himself. To eat, sleep and do whatever he wanted. No need to greet the alpha, or cook him a meal. No spending time with him in the garden. This should excite the elusive omega. Nevertheless; it did not.

Alfred perked up, nodding. “Ah, good! I left some money and my card on the kitchen table. So if you need anything, you should be alright. Go shopping if you want. Keep yourself busy.” He encouraged Ivan to shop on several occasions. Books, clothes, shoes, he wanted to spoil him. Yet Ivan seemed apprehensive and conservative with Alfred’s money. Never spending it on a want, only a need.

Alfred’s trying to change that.

“Oh! And invite whoever you want. I know that Feli fellow is nice. He’s always welcomed in our home.” He emphasized on the word our, per usual. The past two weeks have been spent with Alfred including Ivan into all aspects of their home life. Asking and valuing his opinion, proving to the omega that he’s considerate and thoughtful. Not the boss of Ivan.

Ivan’s eyes glanced down as he thought about his best friend. He’s been over a handful of times. Inviting him over this weekend could be fun. Two omegas bonding, without the watchful eye of an alpha. To be able to speak, no paranoia if an alpha had super hearing and could understand their gossip.

“... I might do that. That could be fun.” Ivan nodded, eyes returning to Alfred. He took notice of the man’s outfit. A clean pair of dark denim jeans, held up by a dark brown leather belt. He’s frequently been outside the entire day. Ivan found himself liking Alfred’s taste in clothing, even what he wore on the ranch. Impulsive thoughts slipped from his lips.

A shorter Italian man with a cheerful smile walked beside Ivan. One of his few friends, Felicano, had talked Ivan into going on a shopping spree with him. Feli shook his head and waved his hand in dismissal. “He gave you his card and is always begging you to spend his money! He wants to spoil you! Let him!” He’s overheard with his own ears Alfred suggesting they go shopping together.

“We are going to turn you into a stylish omega! Alfred won’t be able to stop staring at you…” Feli teased, grinning. He’s quite a fashionable man himself, as he’s from Milan. It would be a shame to be from one of the fashion capitals of the world and not know how to dress.

Ivan blushed from the suggestion of Alfred gawking at him. The alpha already did at times, he noticed it from the corner of his eyes. His usual baby blues were piercing, like a wolf waiting for his prey to move. The omega knew from the beginning that Alfred was pinning after him. The alpha is a gentleman, of course. Feli sighed and shook his head. “Lie to yourself, friend. Not me!” He puffed out his chest, having the confidence Ivan so lacked. He pouted in response while following behind the Italian. 

“Oh! Come in here!” Feli ushered, going inside a store and leading him to a clothing rack. The metal poles held up an assortment of mock necks. Feli grabbed a black one in and held it up to Ivan’s chest. “What are you? Extra large?” He questioned. Ivan sighed and looked down in embarrassment.

“I am fat, so.. two X-Large…”

Feli rolled his eyes as he went to hunt for that size. “You’re not fat! Just… tall and wide…” Offering a kind smile, and shrugging. “And even if you were, that’s not a bad thing.”

Ivan’s violet eyes narrowed as he raised a brow. “Says the skinniest man alive.” He snarked back. Feli just giggled and waved his hand. “Hehe, thank you!” The omega went back to looking for clothes, while Ivan snorted and held his face in his hands.

After some time for Feli gathering a huge collection of clothes and forcing Ivan to carry it, they went to the dressing room. Feli gave strict instructions on what pieces to put together. Ivan walked out nervously with the first set. A black turtleneck with dark green cargo pants, held up by a belt and black combat boots to match. Feli clapped and grinned, pleased with himself.

“I love it! We’re getting that.” He stated. Ivan turned his hips to look at his behind in the mirror, then using his hands to feel his waist and chest. The turtleneck was soft and slim fit, showing off his figure. 

“I… are you sure it looks nice…?” Ivan asked in a nervous tone. He liked how it looked, but felt as if it’s silly on him.

Feli nodded quickly, “Yes. The way baggy pants meet at your waist accentuates it.”

Ivan looked at himself in the mirror and gulped. Nodding, he accepted Feli’s approval. He lifted up his foot, pointing out the platform of the boots.

“These make me even taller…”

“Mm. I knew you would like that.”

Ivan smiled for the first time in the dressing room. Going back to change, he came out with Feli’s next instructions. A creamed color tank top, with light brown grid-checkered pants. Feli offered another clap and signaled approval. “Perfect! Oh, this would look so good with a chunky necklace…” The omega started detailing more ideas, while Ivan rubbed his arms.

“I hate my arms…”

“Why?!” Feli asked in shock, eyes wide.

“They are so big…”

Ivan turned red and went back into the dressing room to change into the next outfit. “I do not even think he truly likes me.. He probably assumed I’m desperate and would sleep with him the same night…”

The Russian had no comeback as he returned with a new outfit. Simple jeans with an off white top. The short sleeve had embroidery near the shoulders, a sunflower design. Ivan ran his fingers on it, having a smile.

“I like it…” he confessed, then turning his hips to see the back of the jeans. “I usually do not care for jeans, but these are comfortable.”

“That’s because they fit you properly.” His friend explained, picking up a cream brown belt to hold up to Ivan’s waist, checking to see if it matches.

“Which outfit should I get…?” Ivan asked, unsure which looked best on him. He had a soft spot for anything floral, and hoped that his omega friend would choose it.

“Which? No, no, we are getting all of it.” Feli said casually. Ivan’s eyes went wide as he shook his head. He pointed to the shirt he’s wearing.

“All?! This shirt alone cost one hundred dollars… I cannot buy more than one…” He insisted. Alfred told him to shop, but he could imagine he meant to spend hundreds of dollars. The alpha already is paying for his independent papers, he couldn’t add on to that burden.

“Do not even worry about the price. He wants to treat you.”

The pair went back and forth until Ivan sighed and agreed to pick out sunglasses. While most were afraid to be pushy with Ivan due to his size, the omegas had known each other for long enough. Feli saw past Ivan’s intimidating exterior years ago. Ivan’s less prideful with the Italian, and felt comfortable going along more than others. It didn’t hurt his ego to give in to the cheerful man like it did with others. There were very few people who Ivan had that dynamic with.

After another hour of grabbing clothes and trying everything on, a gigantic pile formed on the checkout counter. Feli looked proud of himself, Ivan appeared concerned, and the cashier seemed impressed.

“Y’all had fun, haha!” She chuckled. As she began to fold and scan their purchase, a fellow cashier came over to assist.

“Yes, my friend’s alpha wants to treat him to a new wardrobe.” He bragged, making Ivan become flustered. He never thought he’d have an alpha to gush about like this. He didn’t know how to respond to a situation he never could have foreseen.

Someone taking care of him.

“Well, aren’t you lucky. He must love you a lot.” The other cashier said, flashing a friendly smile.

“He does.” Feli said for him, before Ivan had a chance to put himself down. The chatty omegas gossiped amongst themselves as Ivan bit his nails, watching the final price climb up. Once everything is folded and ready to bag, Ivan forced himself to speak up. He could not spend five thousand dollars; something needed to be put back.

“I, I cannot spend that much money Feli-”

“Yes you can. He wants you too.”

“When he said to go shopping, he probably meant… a few hundred dollars, yes?” Ivan argued, unable to fathom the idea of Alfred alright with this. Feli isn’t having any of it.

“Call him. And ask, right now.” Feli pointed to the two sweet cashiers. “They spent all this time folding everything for us, come on~”

“You can call him and take your time. Don’t worry.” One of the cashiers said. The store isn’t busy, and they wouldn’t shut down the idea of getting Ivan convinced to follow through with the purchase. They were in sales after all.

“Um…” Ivan took out his phone, feeling put on the spot. Three people were looking at him, awaiting the call to ask if Alfred would approve of an absurd amount of money. Gulping, he pressed ‘call’ and held it to his ear. Feli leaned in to eavesdrop.

Praying that Alfred wouldn’t pick up, he’s nervous when he hears his charming accent on the other side. “Hey honey! What’s up? Everything okay?”

Ivan stuttered, the emotion of discomfort the only way he could describe this situation. “So, uh, me and Feli are at the store shopping.”

“Oh, that’s great! Whatcha’ getting?”

“Clothes, um, a lot.” Ivan isn’t the type to stutter and use ‘ums’ and ‘uh’s, but he felt as awkward as ever. “But, the bill is very high. I told Feli it was too much, but he insisted that I ask. But, I know you will say no.”

“Well, how much is it?” Alfred inquired.

Ivan whispered the amount in fear, but was hit with a:

“Oh, that’s fine! Ha, spend more if you want.” Alfred chuckled on the other side of the line. Ivan blinked, in shock of those words. “... Really…? Are you sure…?”

“Yeah, of course. I saved up for when my omega moves in. Put Feli on the phone.”

Ivan handed over the phone with uncertainty. Feli smiled and nodded while talking to Alfred. “Mhm. Exactly, yes. Yes we will. Do not worry!” He hung up and handed it back over to Ivan.

“Alfred says, to spend whatever you want, and that he wants me to take you to more stores. And that is an order, not a suggestion.” The Italian winked.

“OOOOO~” The cashiers wooed in unison, both grinning and giggling. “An order through the phone! He’s serious about spoiling you. You’re so lucky!” Everyone gushed about Alfred, but Ivan stayed silent as he handed over the credit card. He nuzzled his burning red face into his scarf. He’s never in his life been the center of attention for something positive. No one has been envious of his circumstances. But here he is, surrounded by omegas telling him how fortunate he is to have Alfred. Perhaps there’s a truth to it.

Not to mention, getting an order from Alfred caused his heart to skip a beat. While they weren’t bonded, and Ivan didn’t even hear it, the mere mention is enough. It’s drilled in an omegas head to follow the orders of their alpha from birth. Ivan’s engaged and living with Alfred, in his custody. Therefore, if any alpha were to give him an order to follow, it’d be him.

After everything was paid for, Feli called Ludwig to carry Ivan’s belongings so they could continue that spree. Three hours and six thousand dollars later, Ivan sat in the living room surrounded by shopping bags.

Ivan shrugged, sitting down on the ground as he went through the bags. “I am… Just not… used to it…” He defended, taking out the folded clothes. Avoiding eye contact, he blushed as he forced himself to thank the alpha.

“... Thank you. Again.”

Alfred couldn’t help but beam and spread out his scent. Seeing his omega crush turn red and thank him did the trick. Ivan took a whiff of it and found himself unable to stay near Alfred. In a panic, he grabbed as many bags as he could and rushed upstairs. “Uh, I, I need to put this all away!”

The little girl had ashy blonde hair, similar to one of the parents. Even cut bangs, with bright blue eyes that matched Alfred’s. He looked at his husband Ivan, smirking back. “Whatcha’ doing? The solar system?”

Before Ivan could answer, their daughter Alina did for him. “Yes! I have to color the planets, and, and, then put them in order of what orbits the Sun!” She said excitedly. She had a red crayon in her hands, filling in the planet of Mars on the paper. Since she was looking down, her hair started to get in her face. Ivan responded by pushing it behind her ear.

“Mmm, let's do some trivia. Ivan, how many Earths can fit inside our sun?” Alfred could make a game out of anything.

Ivan chuckled, playing along, “About a million.” His finger traced the soft carpet of his daughter's room.

“Correct! Ally, could you walk on Neptune?” He asked, turning his attention to his daughter. She shook her head, looking up. “No! It’s a gas giant! You would fall all the way down…” She described, speaking up again, “You, you would fall through Jupiter too!” Excitement came from her voice about the topic. A clear passion for the entire family.

“What color is the sunset on Mars?” Ivan asked, deciding it’s time for Alfred to be quizzed.

“It appears blue.” He said with confidence, puffing his chest out. Ivan rolled his eyes, but smiled, “You are correct.”

Alina took her blue crayon, making scratching sounds on the paper as she colored it in Neptune. The mentions of planets made her ask her own question. “Papa, if you had to visit a planet, what would it be?” She asked in an innocent tone. She’s five, and has the child-like curiosity of wanting to know everything. Ivan had to pounder, looking up as he hummed. “Mm. Good question…” He trailed on, “Perhaps Mars. There is evidence of past life. It would be fascinating to see, yes?”

Alina nodded, then glanced at Alfred. “What about you, Daddy?”

Alfred had a quick response, "Wherever Papa goes.” He offered a gentle smile to Ivan, taking in his features. His ashy blond hair framed his face, with soft locks curling around his cheeks. He had a large nose, with a bump on the bridge that Ivan hated, but Alfred loved. Large hooded shaped eyes. His iris were such a deep shade of blue that they appeared violet. Full, pink lips that Alfred would bruise if allowed. A soft round face that he covered in kisses everyday. In his eyes, Ivan is stunning. He could look at him all day, and would when together.

“Okay, well, I guess I’mma go to Mars because I need to go with my Daddy and Papa.” Alina replied, making her parents laugh. Ivan took his fingers and ran it through his daughter's soft, straight hair. “You are so sweet…” He whispered, kissing the top of her head. She’s clearly a loved child, with both Ivan and Alfred doting after her.

“What’s for dinner?” She asked, still coloring.

“Chicken and rice… it should almost be done, actually…” Ivan said, using his arms to push himself off the ground. “How about we finish your project later?” He suggested. Their daughter got up and followed them into the kitchen. She immediately got distracted by the TV in the living room, then began begging for a show. “Can I watch Bluey?” She asked, jumping up and down. 

Alfred nodded, heading over, “Yes, for a little bit.” While he handled that, Ivan went to the stove to check on the rice. Opening the lid, the aroma hit his nose as he nodded. “Perfect.” He said to himself in Russian. Putting his oven mitts on, he was about to bend over and open it when he felt arms wrap around his waist and lips on his neck. A smile grew on his face as he leaned in. “Mm, my love, I am trying to cook…” His plea for Alfred to move didn’t work, as his husband only squeezed him harder.

“Let me just touch you for a second…” He whined, kissing his neck more. Soft lips on his neck is Ivan’s weakness, it felt cruel to push away such loving embraces. But he had dealt with this the entire day. Ivan had worked from home, and Alfred had a night shift at the funeral home today. Which meant he had his husband pester him all of daylight.

Ivan waved him off, rolling his eyes but having a small smile. “Touching me is what you have been doing all day. You act touch starved.” He muttered. Alfred rested his chin on his shoulder, shrugging. “I am. I can’t get enough of you, ever.” He said it as if it’s an obvious fact. Ivan shook his head, eyes looking at the ceiling. “You are obsessed with me.” Teasing his partner, Alfred reacted by nodding and agreeing. “Yes. I am. Always. Forever!” He went to kiss the back of Ivan’s head, smelling his mint shampoo in his hair.

Alfred did loosen his grip so Ivan could back up. Bending over, he retrieved the baked chicken. A wave of heat hit Ivan’s face as he squinted his eyes. His husband watched with careful eyes, fixated on Ivan’s hands as he lifted the pan out. His fingers rubbed the soft fabric of Ivan’s sweater.

“My little puppy. What would you do without me?” Ivan whispered, a grin tugging on the corner of his lips before getting out of his hold. “It is time for dinner, Alina!” Ivan exclaimed, going to grab plates and utensils for the family. Alfred went into helpful mode, aiding Ivan on creating plates for all three of them. Silverware and plates clanking as Alfred piled them. Once the family were settled at the table, they all began their usual talking and chatting. 

“Daddy, today, someone asked me what you do for work.” Alina stated, putting a piece of cut up chicken in her mouth. It had a faint peppery smell. Alfred raised a brow, “Oh? What did you say?” He asked. Curious to know how a five year old would word his career to others. After finishing chewing, she swallowed and answered. “I, I told them that you cut up dead people’s bodies and put chemicals in them so other people could look at them.” She said in a matter of fact tone.

Ivan had to cover his mouth to stop himself from spitting out food, while Alfred is lucky enough to have nothing in it. The room fills with stifled laughter, with Alfred putting his face on his hands. In horror, he shook his head as he tried to not keep giggling at what his daughter had to say.

“I mean… You’re not wrong… But…” More laughs slipped out, the adults struggling to control themselves. Children had a way of saying things, especially at the wrong times.

“Baby, just say I’m a mortician…” He said, chuckling after his sentence. His daughter sighed, her shoulders falling down. “I do, Daddy!” She exclaimed, defending herself. “I say, ‘My Daddy is a mortician’... But the other kids don’t know what that is! So, so I have to explain! And I say, that you cut up dead people’s bodies and put chemicals in them! Because that’s what you do!”

Ivan had to push his chair back due to laughter. The chair legs scraped across the floor as he leaned into his lap. His legs were used to hide his laughs. Nothing could be funnier than a child’s bluntness. Alfred put his face in his hands again, his cheeks red from laughing. “We are gunna get fucking CPS called on us… Your friends probably think I’m some psycho…”

Alina gave a ‘duh’ look on her face, raising a brow. “Well, Daddy, maybe you should have a less weird job.”

Ivan continued snickering, his eyes tearing up. He panted for air, talking between laughs. “Oh my god, I can’t breathe!” He snorted. Alfred sat up straight, extending his hands. “Oh, you just think this is soooo funny, huh?” Alfred had a sheepish smirk on his face. Clearly joking back, Ivan nodded as he attempted to contain himself. “Yes. Yes I do.” He wiped the corner of his eyes, enjoying every second. Nothing is better than watching his husband catch strays from a child.

Alfred put his elbow on the table and pointed to Ivan. A raised brow and a weak smile, he defended his profession. “Listen. My dad is retiring soon. So after ten years of hard work…” He used his other hand to point behind him. “Soon Daddy is gunna make a lot of money paying other people to cut dead people open.” He put both palms in the air and smirked as he glanced at both. “A lot!”

Alina merely rolled her eyes and shrugged. “Whatever you say, Daddy.” This wins another laughing session from Ivan, with Alfred closing his eyes, and taking a deep breath.

“Just tell people I’m a funeral director… and eat your dinner, baby.”

Ivan manages to compose himself to resume eating, with their conversation moving to a less morbid topic. Ivan used this opportunity to bring up his sister. “So, Irina, her husband got the job. It is official. They are moving here this summer!” He said with a big smile, eating a spoonful of rice. Alfred’s eyes went wide due to the news. “Wow. That’s amazing! I’m so happy for them. I’m glad it worked out…” He nodded, showing interest. Ivan did a little clap, beaming from the news. “I know. I am so excited. And they will only be forty-five minutes away.” Ivan glanced at Alfred softly, “It will be nice to have more family close by…” Alfred smiled back, but it didn’t reach his eyes.

The trio gossiped about the details of Ivan’s older sister moving to America, and after a while dinner ended with Alfred getting ready to go to work. It being close to seven, he’s running a bit late. But he valued dinner time with his family. Moments like this were unforgettable. And he’d never be able to get them back.

Before leaving, he of course gave everyone a hug and kiss goodbye. He first went to Ivan, grabbing his sides and dipping him in a romantic manner. He could feel Ivan’s smile under the kiss, and adored the giggle he made when lifted back up.

“Text me before you go to bed, bunny.” Alfred reminded. Ivan rolled his eyes, half smiling. “Of course… I always do…”

Alfred bent down to give his daughter a kiss and hug, squeezing the little girl. It made her laugh, which is one of the cutest sounds in the world to Alfred.

“Night baby, I love you!”

Alina waved, with Ivan feeling the weight of her leaning against his leg. “Bye, bye Daddy.”

Closing the door behind him, Alfred’s charming smile turned to one of annoyance when alone.

White lights.

Sterile.

Cold.

Those were the words Alfred would use to describe the prep room. Ventilation everywhere to take in the toxic flumes. Slightly antiseptic, sterile air. All the supplies were organized and had a place. From the tools, machines, and bottles of chemicals. Nothing could be left misplaced, the process required perfection.

Covered in protective gear, the average person would think he’s a nurse dealing with infectious patients. Full body smock, medical face mask, a face shield, and a hairnet. Even two pairs of gloves. The only thing that left him identifiable were his bright blue eyes. Only someone who knew Alfred personally would be able to recognize him.

There’s a step by step process that he’s been doing for a decade. Lock the door. Place the cadaver on the table. Check inventory.

Look over their condition. Wash the body, set the features. Make their face look presentable if being buried. Use a needle injector for the upper and lower jaw to close their mouth. Use a scalpel to cut into their neck to gain access to the carotid artery. Begin to drain out the blood with a tube he’d insert.

Those would be the first few steps if he was only embalming, but with this corpse;

Alfred has different plans.

Alfred looked over the wrist tag of the cadaver. It laid out all the identifying information. Name, date of birth, and time of death. A woman in her seventies, who had an autopsy. By the looks of her body, he assumed natural causes. There were no major injuries that would suggest she was hurt or a victim of a suspicious death. Only an empty chest cavity, with a viscera bag sitting in it. He lifted the clear bag to inspect it, and inside were a mix of the woman’s internal organs; heart, lungs, liver and stomach. His trained eyes could easily tell each other apart. Narrowing his eyes, he decided on which part to take. The heart.

Placing it back for a moment, he walked to the supply closet. Pulling a jar, along with formaldehyde and a label. Echoes of his own movements falling along.

Formaldehyde; it carried a strong, sharp order that Alfred wouldn’t forget. A smell he’s used to, and even his husband is at this point. All of his work clothes would immediately be thrown in the wash when arriving at home. Especially after having Alina, he didn’t want her to be familiar with the chemical. Unlike him as a child, he wanted her to grow up where she’d wrinkle her nose at the whiff of it. He didn’t know how long he could keep his daughter disinterested in his job. While a family business, he planned on selling it before retirement. And sending his wonderful, sweet, beautiful daughter to college for a subject completely unrelated. Enjoy the rest of his life with his husband. Never having to worry about getting a call at two in the morning, that’d force him to drive to the funeral home to collect a body.

Ivan.

Alfred glanced over to the small, stainless steel desk. Placed on it is his phone, paper work, a pen, and a picture frame. The wooden frame contained a favorite photo of his; Ivan holding their daughter as an infant. A beaming smile on his soft lips. Joyful to be a father.

He’d do anything for him. Everything he did was for him.

Also for their daughter as well, but, it all started with Ivan. Their perfect child wouldn’t be here without him. Everything great in his life came from that man. He couldn’t fathom how he’d go on if he ever left him. Divorced him, found another man to marry. It’s one of Alfred’s greatest fears, and he’d guarantee it’d never happen. Ivan would never leave him, even if he wanted to.

He meant the words ‘Until death do us part’ at their wedding.

He used the pen to label the jar with a case number, organ type, and date. He poured some formaldehyde in, before being reminded about his music. Since his hands were double gloved, he routinely had Siri set up.

“Hey, Siri! Play music.”

It isn’t uncommon for morticians to listen to music or the radio while working. Unless with an apprentice, you’d do this entire process alone. No one to disturb you, make a joke, or complain about what you chose to play. While two bodies were in the room, only one had the ability to sit in their thoughts.

Once music started to play from his phone, Alfred threw his head back in laughter once he heard the beat of the first. Tapping his foot, he sang along to a song he remembered his own father listening to. 

“Don’t sing if you want to live long,”  He grabbed a sterilized scalpel, returning to the viscera bag in the cadaver’s body. Carefully lifting the heart, he cut a section off. “They have no use for your song”. Quickly, he transfers it to the jar with a preservative solution. The liquid is at room temperature.

“You’re dead, you’re dead, you’re dead, you’re dead and out of this world.”

It’s only a section, and wouldn’t be noticed once he repaired and embalmed the body. Alfred is methodical, he couldn’t harvest everything. He swayed mildly to the guitar, the music and his voice lightly echoing in the stainless steel room.

“You’ll never get a second chance,” He glanced at the family photo. “Plan all your moves in advance.”

Each body, depending on its state, had to be a calculated risk. Sure, he could have taken all the organs. He’s talented enough to know how to repair and fill the chest cavity enough to make it look as if all the person's internal organs weren’t missing. But this family wanted their loved one to be embalmed and presented for burial.

In actuality, he’d be fine taking the entire heart. The chest cavity is already open, no need to cut into the cadaver. But he’s meticulous, he knew the exact amount of money each piece made. He’d calculated what he needed that month, but never over. Even if it was rare, he couldn’t risk getting caught.

“Stay dead, stay dead, stay dead,” Alfred eyed the cadaver. “Stay dead and out of this world.”

Letting the specimen sit in formaldehyde, he went over to wash his scalpel and hands. Water rinsing off blood and chemicals down the drain. Slight stickiness from the chemical residue as he rubbed his fingers together. His humming grew louder which each beat.  “Run fast, don’t stand in the sun,” His eyes went to the bag of organs he’d need to embalm later. Alfred leaned in, putting his elbows on the counter. He sighed as he thought about the next few hours he’d spend here, instead of next to his husband. “There’s too much work to be done.”

Turning off the water, he ran his gloved finger over the scalpel. He knew it’s clean when he could see his own reflection. A single blue eye looking back, “You’re down, you’re down, you’re down.”

He turned around, walking back to the cadaver. Alfred’s eyes went to her face, which was at peace. He’d have to focus back on embalming. The wet specimen would have its own process later. Taking another deep breath from emotional exhaustion, he kept singing.
