I don't know if this has been done before but oh well.
I have about 4 drafts on my fanfiction blog and I can't find motivation or ideas for any of them. I've tried everything - from different search engines to just about every site I could find - and there's nothing for writing fanfiction! Any help?
This happened to me last winter. Honestly, I saw a therapist, but there was also other crap going on. I mention the therapist right away because there's no way for me to truly diagnose what's going on with you, especially if you're cutting off your friends--this is a red flag for depression, and to me, signals that you should talk to someone more qualified than I am.
Anyway, though, my therapist noted that, as an English major, my homework involves reading and writing. And then I came to her wondering why I didn't want to read or write anymore in my free time. It freaked me out, because my old hobbies were suddenly just feeling like work, like homework. I felt like my passions were slipping away from me.
It turned out that what I needed was to get out of my head. My therapist suggested I find something physical to do in my free time, something with immediate results (the opposite of reading/writing). So, like, knitting or painting or something. I crochet sometimes.
I also needed to get my head out of my ass and get on with my life. Maybe it sounds harsh, but I desperately needed to stop feeling sorry for myself and just do things. Tell yourself that it's just a rough patch, because that's exactly what it is.
Do things, Anon. Get out of your own head and get on with your life. It worked for me, at least. I'm back to enjoying the things I've historically enjoyed, but in more moderation, and I feel better about my motivation now.
Hi! I really love your blog over at The Epic, the Awesome, and the Random. It's always so fun to read, and you are such a smart, wonderful, and adorable person. Just thought I'd let you know how much I loved your blog and your writing advice (I actually recommended your blog on my own Tumblr, under 'My Favorite Websites!').
Aww, thanks! I wish I still had time to update that thing as often as I used to, but it makes me smile to know that people read it and enjoy it.

“You should outline each character’s development in complete detail before even thinking of starting your story!”
No, I haven’t killed anyone. I just need to know how to hide a body for....for...for science.
And when you can’t think of a name, you just call them ASDFJKL;.
So, I start a lot of stories and I tend to lose interest in them. The people that urge me to continue them get let down and so I was wondering if you had any suggestions to get that motive back
Hey, sorry for taking so long to get back to you (and for being absent lately in general)! If you’re looking to rediscover that motivation that you started with, try making a list of why you started that particular story in the first place. What caused the initial spark? What about it made you excited? Do some troubleshooting–maybe it’s lost that spark. Maybe it’s gone off track, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fixed. If you do some general troubleshooting, you might discover why your motivation is gone. It’s possible that you just keep hitting slow points or walls in character development and lose interest that way, so if you can fix these issues, you can get yourself over these bumps.
If you’re having trouble finishing anything at all, try setting writing goals for yourself. Set a goal to finish Story X by next week. Or next month, or however long it takes you to write. Be realistic–pushing yourself harder than you’re willing to go will only kill your motivation. Then again, do push yourself, since a too-easy goal isn’t worthwhile. Set yourself up with a little reward, too. I will occasionally hold off on downloading an album I’m excited about until I reach a certain goal, which gives me even more motivation to reach that goal. Do whatever works for you. You might find that having a system of challenges and rewards in place keeps your motivation at a higher level.
Hopefully that helped; always feel free to follow up with any other questions.
I actually made a schedule for my writing times ! It really works for me and I put in it the time when I had to only think of the development, the plot, the twists and all that stuff, and then there is the actual writing moment (no more than 2hours in a row for me). And it helps me to keep motivation too ! I know what I have to do and when (and I have 5 stories ongoing) and I have one day and a half free to do whatever I want (writing or not). It will also actually help you to please your readers because it gives you the opportunity to give them regular updates and new pages to read ;) And sometimes, just the fact to read or watch a movie which could remind you in a way your story, or your character, can help ! It gives you new ideas and stuff :) When I am stuck in my stories, I often think about them just before sleeping, there, in the dark under my blankets and it can help too !
Reblogging for the extra advice!

when you start a new book and you think it’s gonna be like
but it’s actually like
[A novel is] a paper where your thesis is that these people are real, and you have to prove it.

WHEN I’M WRITING AND I REALLY GET IN THE GROOVE
It’s just like:
When writing couples, I like to use the Kiss Rule:
If they have to kiss for you to know they’re in love, you’re not writing a romance right.
damn tho
