Perhaps the biggest misconception people have about homeless teens is that they are troublemakers--why else would they be homeless, right? Not so. There are so many reasons why youth become homeles...

" According to a study from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, approximately 26% of gay teens who “come out” about their true selves are told to leave their homes. Imagine being shunned from your own family simply for being you…."

Here are some other facts about homeless youth that will surprise you:

– 1 out of every 3 homeless people is under the age of 18.

– 13 kids die on the streets every day in the U.S.

– Approximately half of all runaways were physically abused before fleeing home.

– Up to a third of runaways have been forced to perform a sexual act against his/her will.

– Half of all runaways left home because of a disagreement with a parent or guardian.

– A third of all runaways will attempt suicide.

– Homeless youth are up to ten times more likely to have or contract HIV than non-homeless adolescents.

– 10% of homeless and runaway females are reportedly pregnant.
