The UnderWar: Chapter 1
MonsterâŚsuch a broad term is itâŚâMonsterâ, but what makes a monster? Is it appearance? Actions? Both? But what makes a hero? What makes a man? Such questions have many answers. But one thing is certain, it doesnât matter what you are, as long as you do good in the eyes of God. Thatâs what one particular monster, a skeleton, wished to do good for the world for both man and monsterkind.
âSANS!â a loud, frustrated, but charismatic voice called out from another area, waking the groggy skeleton named Sans. he seemed exhausted like he didnât get enough sleep last night. His brother, a tall, lanky skeleton, comes barging into the room, nearly breaking the door off its hinges.
âPapyrus, Watch it! You nearly broke the doorâŚâ Sans says groggily.
âIâll worry about it later! Toriel called us to the castle, itâs urgent!â Papyrus says urgently, Sans immediately picks up the urgency of it, and this causes Sans to sit up.
âWhatâs wrong?â Sans asked, baffled.
âI donât know, Toriel wasnât specific on what it was, but we need to hurry!â Papyrus said, rushing to get his things to prepare to leave. Sans soon went and got dressed quickly and made it outside their house, Papyrus was already outside.
âSansâŚI donât ask this oftenâŚbut we need your shortcutâŚâ Papyrus says with a serious look, Sans looks at his brother in surprise, this gives the short skeleton a good indication of just how serious the call is.
âOkay, hold on,â Sans grabs hold of his brother and they soon vanish into thin air, it takes less than a second to arrive in Asgoreâs war room, Toriel looks while holding a young human childâs shoulder.
âThank God you're hereâŚâ Toriel stated, concerned. âWe have a serious situationâ she added holding her child close to her.
âWhat is going on?â Sans asked.
âMonstersâŚcreatures of the underworldâŚtheyâve returnedâŚâ Asgore says this caused the room to go quiet.
âAnd your kind unfortunately doesnât affect themâŚâ spoke a human general standing to the side.
Sans and Papyrus are at the human general. They are surprised to see a grown man standing near their king, but it shouldnât be as surprising since they were on the surface and had been for the past couple of years.
âWhat exactly do you mean by that General Samuel?â Toriel asked him.
âMany Monsters tried using their magic to fend off the Underbeasts but ultimately failedâŚitâs like the beasts are immune to normal magic attacks. Magic spears, blastsâŚyou name itâŚâ Samuel says pondering on what to say next.
âPardon me but-â Papyrus started to speak, but Sans cuts him off.
âWho are you?â Sans asks bluntly.
âOh! Sorry, Iâm Samuel Thomasâ Samuel says politely, as if he isnât even looking at two skeletons right now.
âHe's been a huge help in fighting the Underbeasts,â Asgore said as he gestured to Samuel.
âIs that what theyâre calledâŚâ Papyrus says as he ponders.
âSo you said a monster's magic is ineffective towards these things?â Sans questions.
âNor human weaponsâŚâ Asgore adds with a saddened look, Sans and Papyrus were worried.
âThenâŚweâre sitting ducksâŚâ Sans says.
âWhere did these things even come from?â Papyrus asks.
âWe arenât sure, weâre currently looking into that,â Samuel says. Soon the sound of the doors opening caught their attention, Samuel looked and smiled. âAh Debbie, great timing,â Samuel said as a girl with a messy bun came rushing towards them.
Sans looked over, his eyes widened at the sight of her, she was a rather beautiful woman with long black hair up in a bun, and she wore round glasses that framed her cute rounded face. She was pretty average in appearance, but that didnât matter to Sans as he watched her.
âThis is my sister, Debbie, she is doing extensive research on the Underbeasts,â Samuel said as he looked at Debbie. Debbie smiled a sweet and calm smile.
âItâs nice to meet you all,â Debbie said, handing the papers to Asgore. âAlphys and I were looking into how the Underbeasts operated, and we did find something interesting,â Debbie said.
âAnd whatâs that Debs?â Samuel asked. Debbie looked at her brother and then back to Asgore.
âThe Underbeasts have a weakness,â Debbie said calmly. This revelation made the whole room go silent, Sans was shocked by this information.
âThere is a magic thatâs powerful enough to kill themâŚitâs called the Nightmare WarriorâŚlegend had it that the first being to use it had a noble heart and soul, its magic was so powerful it managed to drive the Underbeast back to once they came,â Debbie said, she sounded calm but certain. Sans felt a glimmer of hope arises from within him. He looks and takes Debbieâs hand without thinking to ask more about this Nightmare Warrior power.
âThen we need to find the Nightmare power and destroy those things, Miss DebbieâŚ!â He asked her with a bright smile, this sudden action caught her off guard and it made her blush.
âW-while yes these things indeed have a weaknessâŚthere is one problemâŚwe donât know how to find or get this powerâŚâ Debbie said as if she was saddened. Sans noticed her saddened attitude.
âWhat do you mean?â Papyrus asked with a concerned look.
âWe can pray to God that he gives us the answers we seek,â Debbie said looking at Sans, her deep brown eyes piercing into his white ones. Sans blushes, he soon pulls his hands away from hers.
âYeahâŚthatâs one option,â Sans says flustered.
âWell Miss Debbie, do you need more time to research this?â Asgore asked.
Debbie snaps out of her blank stare.
âOH! Yes! Sorry, yes I would need more time to research thisâ Debbie says as she shakes off her blush. Asgore noticed but didnât mention this at all, all he did was nod in agreement.
âThen itâs settled, you may look in the royal library to see if you find any information there,â Asgore said. Debbie bows slightly.
âThank you, sir,â Debbie said with a smile. Asgore nodded and soon the meeting adjourned, Sans was blushing like crazy with embarrassment. He couldnât believe he held Debbieâs hands without thinking, but he canât lie, Debbieâs blush was adorable to him as well.
Sans was making his way back into his room, he seemedâŚdisheartened, so he walked into his room and sat down on his bed. The room was filled with silence, his thoughts were all over the place, he soon looked up to the ceiling, as if he was expecting something. That's when he sighed and soon got off the bed and kneeled, as he kneeled, he looked up at the ceiling.
"Please...give me the strength to help the people I love..." Sans says as he looks down, he keeps praying. âPlease GodâŚgive me the strengthâŚâ He said looking up, he continued praying, and thatâs when he soon went to bed, as he laid down, he started to doze off.
He started to dream of him running through the city. It was complete and utter chaos. He was running around, calling for his brother, or anyone for that matter ...the entire place was in disarray and chaos. He looked and saw Debbie on the ground unconscious. âOh noâŚâ he muttered as he rushed over.
Sans held her gently, checking for any indication of injury. As he held her, there was the sound of thundering footsteps, the ground shook as the thunderous sound got closer. Sans looked and his eyes widened when he saw a towering Underbeast, its massive body towering over the buildings.
It looks at Sans and it growls with rage, it soon prepares its attack from its mouth. Sans had zero idea how to avoid or escape the beast's attacks. He feels that he is too weak and hopeless to go against it. And not just to save everyone. Including Debbie. He was starting to shake, he fearfully closed his eyes, but he felt a wave of determination fill him, reopened his eyes, and unbeknownst to him, his eyes changed to have a four-pointed white star in his eyes. He held onto Debbie with a firm but protective hold while glaring at the Underbeast. He stretched his hand out and summoned a strange spear-like weapon with an ax head. With a battle cry, he threw the spear weapon at the Underbeast. It soon goes straight through the Underbeastâs head, killing it instantly. Sans was shocked about what had just happened. Blinking, he looked at the spear returned, he looked and saw it was a halberd, it was a beautifully crafted weapon, with elegant markings that were carved into its blades.
Sans was very confused, he looked at the halberd and soon saw his reflection in its blade, he was shocked at how his eyes had changed, some markings appeared on his face as well. He reached to touch the markings, which gently glowed upon contact. Thatâs when Sans slowly started to wake from his dream, as he did, he had the worst headache heâd had in yearsâŚthis wasnât like any other headache, this was like a hangover headache or a headache you get when you wake up late. He sat up with a groan, he went to put on his slippersâŚonly to notice how tight they were. He looks and reaches to grab one.
âWhat? They fitted just fine yesterdayâŚâ Sans says he went to stand up, only to realize he was now much taller than normal. âWhat?â He asked himself, clearly, this was throwing him off. But he soon went to see where Papyrus was. As Sans made it downstairs, he heard the sound of cooking, which brought a sense of relief.
âMorning Papyrus,â Sans says as he walks to the kitchen doorway, he could still clear the doorway without having to duck, which is a good thing cause no doubt that wouldâve been an annoying thing to deal with.
âAh! Good morning Sans! You're up early!â Papyrus says as he looks towards Sans where he thought his brotherâs original height would be. Papyrus has his eyes closed for a moment as he smiled cheerfully, âyou're just in time for breakfast! Your going to-â thatâs when Papyrus stopped mid sentence when he opened his eyes and realized that SansâŚis no longer shorter than him. âUhâŚSansâŚnew look?â Papyrus asked.
