even  shrouded  by  the  dark  of  the  night,  the  jump  of  her  shoulders  is  unmistakable,  tómas'  eyes  catching  on  the  movement  as  he  steps  fully  into  the  kitchen.⠀"⠀'s  just  me,⠀"⠀he  tells  her,  a  warning  withheld  until  far  too  late.  guilt  is  sure  to  stir  in  his  chest  over  it  later⠀—⠀for  now,  he's  far  too  busy  with  making  quick  work  of  reaching  into  the  fridge  for  a  bottle  of  water,  anything  to  keep  himself  from  caving  into  the  hands  of  his  own  fears  as  his  gaze  flickers  towards  the  glaring  1:35  flashing  back  at  him  from  the  oven  clock.⠀"⠀…⠀it's  late,  kit.  why  are  you  still  up,  hm⠀?⠀even  dane  and  iris  have  gone  to  bed  by  now.⠀"

01. running their thumb over the others bottom lip slowly. 02. standing just a little too close, enough to feel each others breath. 03. grazing their knuckles along the other's hip or thigh in passing. 04. undoing the top button of their shirt while holding eye contact. 05. leaning in like they're going to kiss and then pausing shyly. 06. sliding a hand under their chin to tilt their head up.

“ i  know  you're  probably  with  him,  and  maybe  for  good  reason.  but,  listen,  you  don't  fuckin'  need  him. ”

“so  who  do  i  need,  exactly  ? you ?”  the  last  word  is  tacked  on  in  part  disbelief,  part  scorn.  “oh,  give  me  a  break,  tony.”

concern  etches  itself  across  her  features  in  no  time  at  all⠀,⠀dorothy's  footsteps  hurried  as  she  makes quick work of following  him  into  the  house⠀.⠀"⠀hey⠀,⠀wait  a  second⠀,⠀"⠀she  pleads⠀,⠀gentle  hand  lifting  to  curve  around  his  wrist⠀.⠀her  eyes  are  wide  when  her  gaze  meets  his⠀,⠀glossy  lips  pouted⠀,⠀and  she  wastes  no  time  on  hesitation  as  she  steps  further  into  his  space⠀.⠀"⠀are  you  sure  you're  okay⠀?⠀you  look  like  you  saw  a  ghost⠀,⠀baby⠀.⠀"⠀

he  had  always  known  he  couldn't  outrun  his  ghosts.  carver  had  been  the  runner  between  them,  devin's  own  feet  too  flat  and  clumsy  to  ever  make  it  more  than  a  few  blocks  away  (  it  had  been  unremarkable  that  he  had  been  the  one  captured,  then,  and  even  more  unremarkable  that  he'd  given  them  all  up  entirely;  a  coward  then,  a  coward  now  ).  but  the  sight  of  the  two  new  neighbors  and  the  person,  brown  eyed  and  familiar,  that  had  brought  them  to  his  small  town  made  every  nerve  and  sense  come  alight  in  him  —  his  perfect  life,  now  shrouded  in  a  phantom  past  that  even  dorothy's  goodness  cannot  assuage. “allergic  to  the  dust  that  old  house  brings  up,  that's  all,”  he  lies  gently,  because  even  in  the  face  of  his  whole  life  collapsing  he  still  sees  salvation  in  her  pout.  his  hand  comes  to  meet  hers,  pulling  on  it  gently  to  press  a  kiss  to  open  palm.  “i  rattled  you,  an'  i'm  sorry." this much, at least, he swears is true.  "you  should  go  back  there,  swear  to  them  i'm  not  just  your  crazy  roommate.”

he  calls  for  them,  voice  all  flint  against  steel  ringing  in  her  ears,  &  oh,  she  smells  smoke.  the deep  breath she takes  only  serves  to  fan  the  flames searing through the gaps of her ribs further,  warmth  burning  through  to  itch  just  below  her  collar.  it  isn't  too  hard  to  find  the  right  label  for  the  feeling:  irritation,  caught  in  an  infinite  war  with  love  (for  the  work,  that is)  to  be  her  companion  in  the  kitchen.  he'd  caught  her  just  as  she'd  been  about  to  take  a  break,  remind  herself  what  fresh  air  had  felt  like  on  her  skin,  allow  for  a  minute  of  respite  from  the  stove's  smouldering  heat.  still,  doesn't  take  too  long  before  she's  peering  over  her  shoulder  at  the  other  —  or  had  her  eyes  always  been  on  him?  she  can't  tell,  in  all  honesty  —  and  her  feet  are  leading  her  over  as  if  with  a  mind  of  their  own.  “  artie's  probably  throwing  another  tantrum  out  back.  and,  like,  that's  only  if  he  hasn't  locked  himself  in  the  walk-in  again.  better  check  to  make  sure  before  he  goes  full-fledged  jackie  taylor,  yeah?  ”  she  wishes  the  desire  to  be  useful,  to  lend  a  hand,  wasn't  always  bubbling  over  inside  of  her.  she  wishes  it  wasn't  obvious  how  it's  amplified  thrice  over  when  it  comes  to  him.  callused  fingers  rub  at  twinging  wrist, the kitchen's heavy cast iron waging war against her carpal tunnel. her doctor would hate her if he ever got to see her.  “  but,  uh,  yeah.  yes,  chef,  of  course.  always.  what're  you  working  on,  what  d'you  need?  ”

there's  a  brief,  confused  beat  there,  punctuated  by  an  unequivocal  “—  yeah,  no,  i  don't  know  who  that  is.”  that  at  this  point  ani  should  be  more  than  used  to;  it's  not  the  first  reference  ani's  pulled  (  he's  pretty  sure  it's  a  reference  )  that's  gone  over  his  head,  and  he's  certain  it  won't  be  the  last.  still,  it's  strange  —  in  moments  where  he'd  usually  prefer  the  silence  he  so  rarely  gets,  he  finds  he  doesn't  mind  her  words,  even  if  sometimes  he  can  only  understand  them  individually.  his  gratefulness  holds  him  hostage  when  she  accepts,  something  in  the  way  she  says  always  dizzying  for  reasons  he's  not  willing  to  confront,  especially  not  with  the  more  foreboding  presence  of  dinner  rush  looming  over  him,  the  weight  of  the  wood  demanding  to  be  felt  in  his  arms.  “yeah,  thanks,  chef  —  just,  like.  c'mere  for  a  sec  ?  damn  table's  not  aligned  up  properly  so  it  keeps  shaking  whenever  someone  so  much  as  breathes  on  it  —”  with  what  little  movement  he  can  muster,  he  wriggles  stubbornly,  allowing  her  more  space  beside  him  such  that  she  comes  into  his  peripheral  vision  as  he  stares  up  at  this  hollow  piece  (  months  ago,  he  would've  had  guys  who  had  guys  to  do  this  shit  for  him.  god,  what  the  fuck  ).  “could  you,  like,  hold  it  up  for  me  a  sec  ?  just  while  i  try  to  screw  this  together,  it's  real  stupid  trying  to  do  this  all  with  just  one  hand.”  off  the  cuff,  he  knows  artie  or  charlie  would've  made  some  juvenile  joke  about  his  choice  of  wording,  but  he's  thankful  he's  in  better  company  now.  unless  …  “——  wait,  shit,”  there's  realization  that  tides  over  him,  followed  by  a  guilt  he  can't  quite  place.  “yo,  you  weren't  about  to  head  out  or  anything,  right  ?  i  can  totally  do  this  on  my  own  if  you're  not  —  like,  seriously,  all  good.”
