Each of them is floating around in space with the corpses of their crewmates. There's a problem that's destroying their homes, and likely the whole universe, that they don't have any idea how to solve. They're probably going to die, too, and suddenly there's a ship right next to theirs and an entirely strange and possibly dangerous new form of life entirely unlike themselves. It would be easy to read that as a threat. To act out of self-preservation first, try to take the resources from the other ship, try to survive.

But they survive together. They survive precisely because they each see a new form of life and realize: it's life. It's what they're fighting to save. It's worth dying for.

So they choose kindness over self-interest. Rocky chooses to communicate first, and all the work that entails, instead of enveloping and destroying Ryland's ship. Ryland chooses to work with Rocky, even though he doesn't think he himself will ever see the fruits of his labor. Rocky chooses to give up six years of his life to give Ryland a chance to go home, and risks his life to save him; Ryland chooses to give up that chance and saves Rocky's life, and brings him home instead. They choose kindness, they choose to put the other above themselves, over and over, and that, quite literally, saves their worlds.
