why wave?

As a cyclist I constantly feel the urge to wave to cars that are courteous. But why? It’s not even like they’re going out of their way to be nice to me; it’s more like they’re not being disrespectful. It must be that I’m so used to being mistreated as a cyclist that when someone treats me respectfully (not threatening to run me over, giving me the right of way when I have it, etc.) I feel like they’re being way nicer than the regular motorist.

That’s not the way it should be. I shouldn’t feel that way. I should feel just like any other person on the road who deserves respect from the motorists around them. It should not be considered abnormal for a motorist to treat me respectfully, thereby urging me to instinctually wave.

As a cyclist, I am constantly moving my hand to the brake lever (”just incase…”). Obviously that is the sensible thing to do as you’re approaching an intersection. I expect that most motorists do the same thing.

But I shouldn’t have to feel like I need to exercise so much caution every single time I am near a moving vehicle.

I don’t know if I have trained myself to be this way, or if I developed naturally, instinctually into a cyclist who is constantly skeptical of a motorist’s willingness to respect my right to be on the road.

So why should I wave? Why should I treat a motorist like they did a good thing for doing the right thing? Why should I act like their behavior is abnormal?

Because it's true. But I won’t wave.
