The words "umfahren" and "umfahren" mean opposite things :) one means "to drive around something" and the other means "to drive into someone"

And "umschreiben" and "umschreiben" also mean different things :) one means "to describe" and the other means "to rewrite"

Copying texts into a notebook

Choose some short & fun texts, something like fairy tales, local news, wikipedia entries etc. in your target language and copy the text into a notebook, leaving a bit of space at the side. Then go over the text again and mark any words you didn’t know & write down their translation or definition next to the text. Also check for any unknown & difficult grammar you noticed and mark that in a different colour.

By writing in your target language (even if it’s just copying) you’ll get used to the sentence structure and overall grammar of your target language. If you do this regularly, you’ll soon find it more easy to form and produce sentences by yourself!

Learning Chinese is a journey that never ends! Sometimes you think you know a word, but then you find out that it has another meaning or usage that you didn't even know about.

Here are some words that I thought I knew but evidently didn't know well enough! The bolded text represents the meaning(s) I was not familiar with.

家教 jiājiào - family education / upbringing / to bring sb up / private tutor

后天 | 後天 hòutiān - the day after tomorrow / life after birth (the period in which one develops through experiences, contrasted with 先天) / acquired (not innate or congenital) / a posteriori

生气 | 生氣 shēngqì - to get angry / to take offense / angry / vitality / liveliness

组织 | 組織 zǔzhī - to organize / organization / (biology) tissue / (textiles) weave

明白 míngbai - clear / obvious / unequivocal / to understand / to realize

冒险 | 冒險 màoxiǎn - to take risks / to take chances / foray / adventure

If you’re looking to practice a bit and remember your target language better… here are tons of free worksheets/workbooks for 34 languages (Japanese, Spanish, Korean, French, German, Italian, etc, etc.)

It’s the same type of “fill in the blank” workbook across all of their languages but the magic in actually rewriting things over and over is that the words end up sticking. Plus, there are English sections where you’ll have to force yourself to remember and write the word/phrase in the target language - which is even better for your memory (called active recall - forcing yourself to remember).  I’m personally a big fan of this approach and I’d do similar to pass vocab quizzes in my HS & uni language classes.
