interminable linguiphile

somewhat tempted to brush up on my stats skills because it’s been ages since i sat those exams and i’ve noticed i can’t automatically understand the descriptions of data collection in papers anymore without having to look things up

anyway, i guess since i’m trying to motivate myself and dig myself out of the hole i’ve gotten into, here’s a list of languages that sound compelling to look into for me right now: armenian, bengali (again), ottoman turkish, welsh, vietnamese (again), and maybe italian

i do really wish there were a free german graded reader app like dot is for mandarin because my greatest struggle is actually reading things even though i know from trial and error that it’s the quickest way for me to absorb and retain skills. it’s a far more daunting task to try and stubbornly struggle my way through a couple pages of my german copy of swbts than it is to read a couple graded reader articles that are intended for the actual reading level i’m at >_<

haven’t been around much recently—not quite sure if/when that will change (hopefully soon. hopefully at the latest by october); i’ve been dealing with a mixture of irl stressors and mental health/disability-related issues that have, to be transparent, made it really hard for me to do anything except the bare-minimum life maintenance. i really am going to try hard to set a schedule for myself again, hopefully within the week, but unfortunately i don’t know how effective that might be, which is rather frustrating, because i really do want to do the things that bring me joy (self-study). the unpleasant realities of being disabled, i guess TT-TT

in belated news, though, i made dean’s list again for spring ^-^ two 4.0s and one 3.6 (my german class, which was a relief because i really struggled to actually attend the class since it was in the morning)

oh to have endless amounts of time and money to throw at language resources

i've been travelling a lot these past couple weeks but i have a few days to rest and i'm planning on working through my flashcards again. i can't actually study extensively at the moment since i couldn't pack my usual notebooks and writing utensils, but as soon as i get back my goal is to dive back into korean/mongolian/qazaq ^-^

this blog has been fairly dead (as tends to happen in spring quarter, when i start to burn out after a full academic year T^T), but i got my german oral final back (99%) and the proctor wrote a compliment about my usage of sein and extensive vocabulary and communication skills (for the 103 level, anyway)! which isn’t too surprising, speaking has always been my strongest skill especially for german, but it was cool ^-^

they need to invent a way to tell cats “i know you think my being awake means i should feed you but i need you to know there’s three more hours until your breakfast time, which is not changed by how bad my insomnia is at the moment”

perhaps mildly petty of me but i do intermittently think about the time i made a post going “hey i think radicals are kind of important to learn because many characters make use of them” and then someone reblogged it claiming “well i just learnt english by guessing” and then about six months later an article came out about how three cueing devastated a generation of american children’s literacy
