my goal is to have insect themed knits (sweaters and socks) in time for when i take entomology class next aug, and then marine themed knits in time for aug 2027

most likely just gonna knit leafhopper knits for insect class, but for marine biology im gonna 1. def make this cute trilobite sweater and 2. maybe if i have time and knowledge, make my own?

AS PROMISED!

Friends and I have been calling this “Fancy Lady Sweater” as a Fancy Lady has commissioned it from me. I keep track of my hours and charge hourly + materials. This sweater took about 80-ish hours all told.

Materials:

BFL 2/8 by Fleece Artist, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Purchased from The Net Loft, Twitchy Hands Creative, and Beehive Wool Shop via their websites, as well as Three Fathom Fiber Arts on Etsy. This yarn was tricky to source because to buy directly from Fleece Artist I would have had to order in bulk quantities. I had worked with the yarn before and knew I loved it, but am also sooooo scared of ordering colors I haven’t seen IRL off the internet so it was a leap of faith. I love all the colorways so much and will be continuing my love affair with variegated colorways.

Things I love about this yarn: Airy but structured woolen spun with delightful loft, squish, and bounce; crispy without being abrasive. I am a horribly picky texture bitch and this is one of my all time favorite yarns for texture. I look for texture and handfeel in yarns over color. Felts pretty readily which I prefer for colorwork. Huge variety of colorways to choose from. BFL wool- not overly fine (i.e., like a merino) and looooong staple so it will in theory be fairly durable over the years. This one is still very comfortable for next to skin wear, without being toooo soft. I don’t like a buttery yarn, it’s just not my thing texture-wise. BFL also has a nice, subtle luster that I enjoy. I will be coming back to this for stranded colorwork projects for years to come. I am scheming up a fair isle project in this yarn…

US 1 for rib, US 2 for stockinette. I use ChiaoGoo interchangeable circulars, expensive but awesome investment long term I looooove them.

Construction:

Bottom up starting with cabled cast on and corrugated rib. Steeked at split hems and arm holes because I hate knitting flat with a passion. Steeks are not as scary as they seem, this is a felty, fingering weight yarn so it was no problem to cut the steeks- the wool holds itself together. I reinforced the steeks at the arms with crochet, and did not need to at the split hem as I added the denim trim. Arms were picked up and knit from body out. The neck hole is double knit to give it a more robust structure. The last few rows of the wrist cuffs are double knit as well.
