A bead of water drips onto the tip of Hyunwoo’s nose. He brushes it away and rubs at the damp hair hanging over his forehead, considering shaking it like a dog. He’d just finished his shift at the pool in the Sports Center, then taken his usual thirty minutes for himself, just to get a few laps in. It was a pretty easy job, since most shifts he didn’t have to do any rescuing—he just sat and watched people in their varying levels of adeptness in the water.
However, tonight he’d been a little distracted. He watched the swimmers with a glazed expression, his mind far away, in the hours following his time at the pool, when he’d be laying beside Roha with his nose pressed into the crook of his neck, adamantly telling him he’s paying attention to whatever they’re watching, when they both know he isn’t. It’s routine by now—Roha meets Hyunwoo from work, they grab snacks or order takeout to meet them back at the dorms, then settle in for a night of indulgence.
The variety of indulgence only seems to be growing.
Shifting his weight from one foot to the other, Hyunwoo contemplates texting Roha, just to check he’s still coming, when he spots him. He can’t help but break into a warm smile, a calmness falling over him at the sight of his best friend. “Hey you, thought you’d forgotten about me.”

there’s something in the air that feels electric, and as he wanders through the crowded corners of the itaewon district, evan feels as though he’s found his place in the city — one decorated in gorgeous lighting, rainbow sparkles, and a sense of acceptance that he can’t exactly describe. every time he turns his head to take in a new sight before him, he’s met with a diverse group of people, plenty of eateries that seem absolutely delicious, and clubs that are calling his name with the selection of music that booms out of them. his eyes are wide like a child’s, and the excitement that pulses through his veins already has him feeling intoxicated despite having no alcohol circulating through his system. he tries not to get too ahead of himself, but he rushes ahead of his partner-in-crime for the evening; not exactly watching where he’s going, but it’s due to the many distractions that taunt him. he has no idea where to begin because he wants to experience it all, so after taking a second to soak in all of the stimuli and decide on a plan of attack, he turns his head around to meet eyes with hyunwoo; beaming at him with awestruck wonder and a toothy grin; ecstatic.
“ wow, this is so cool !! ” evan exclaims, waiting for his comrade to catch-up to him. “ i heard that this was a fun place to be, especially when night falls, but like, i don’t know… i get a good vibe here. everythin’ looks so fun !! ” a part of him feels pretty lame for being so thrilled by this, but having grown up in a conservative area in southern united states, this is like a carnival to him. he always had a hunch that he was destined for city life, but now that he’s here, he’s able to confirm that inkling as fact. “ i heard there’s a place called ‘ why not ?? ’ that’s really fun. do you wanna start there ?? that, or do you wanna go someplace else ?? ” he asks his mate, not wanting to make all of the decisions himself. it’s their night out, after all; not just his.
You’d think, after a few years now of back and forth, will-he-won’t-he, yes, no, that Hyunwoo would be at least somewhat comfortable in a place like Itaewon. In a way, he is, though the awe and excitement is clouded by the deep, bone-deep dread of acknowledging why he belongs here. Sure, Itaewon has it’s regular clubs and bars and shops and people, but then there’s the other stuff, the people and places that make Hyunwoo’s insides twist and turn and knot themselves up. He wants to be here, that much he’s sure of, but fighting against his nerves has never been easy.
With Evan, though, it’s at least possible.
Hyunwoo’s eyes are glued to his companion, a small smile fixed to his lips. Seeing Evan so excited and in his element puts Hyunwoo at least slightly at ease. He may not be ready to dive headfirst into what Itaewon has to offer, but he wants Evan to experience this, to see things he’s not seen before, and enjoy being unashamedly himself, as Hyunwoo wishes, deep down, he could be too. “I want to go wherever you want to go. I’m just having fun watching you have fun.” Hyunwoo doesn’t usually leave decisions purely up to other people, but tonight he wants to watch Evan bask in the glow of the city lights and smile and laugh and dance.
While Evan may get drunk off the atmosphere, or the drinks they’re bound to find in their hands later tonight, Hyunwoo can already feel himself becoming fuzzy around the edges from Evan’s intoxicating existence. He quickens his steps to catch up with his friend, reaching out upon instinct, as if he’s about to take Evan’s hand, then draws back, glancing at the people around them. His insides clench with a heavy feeling—he’s ashamed of pulling back, yet he’s frozen, and can’t put his hand out again. He merely falls into step beside Evan, hoping to forget his cowardice quickly.

Hyunwoo was born in Busan, South Korea to a science teacher & a secretary, but his parents were never really in love, and when he was 8 his dad disappeared (read: ran away) and he’s not seen or heard from him since
He was very close to his older brother growing up, though after their father left his brother took it very badly and began to act out and rebel, eventually getting in with undesirable crowds and turned into a very different person
His brother had opinions on everything, and many of the negative ones, unbeknownst to his brother, applied to Hyunwoo, so he tried to hide who he was and change himself to be what his brother thought of as ideal. This led to Hyunwoo repressing his emotions, ignoring his interests and passions, and denying his attraction to men
When Hyunwoo was 12 his mother met a wealthy man who a year later she and the boys moved to live with in Seoul. The man helped pay for intervention for Hyunwoo’s older brother, but he didn’t improve, and when he turned 18 he moved out and just got worse
Hyunwoo hasn’t spoken to his brother since before he entered the military after his first semester at Kyungwon. Last he heard his brother was working odd jobs and living on a friends couch, spending most of his money on alcohol
Hyunwoo has always had big emotions that control him far more than he controls them, and this often got him in trouble when he was young, especially after his brother began to encourage him to bottle it all up. He’d push everything down until it exploded out of him
He loves history and sports, which he spends most of his time focusing on these days. He enjoys studying for his classes, so does more studying than your typical student, and a lot of his free time is taken up with swimming or gymnastics. Sometimes he’ll go for a run but that’s more of a last ditch effort to blow off steam when he feels ready to explode
He wants to be an archaeologist, though he used to want to be a competitive swimmer or gymnast. Despite it being too late to go professional in these sports, he still likes to maintain his skills

In Hyunwoo’s first semester at Kyungwon, back in the summer of 2020, he tried to open himself up to relationships with men. The thought terrified him, and he had no idea as to how to go about it, but eventually he met your muse, and they ended up being his first kiss with a guy. Things looked like perhaps they could go further, as both they and Hyunwoo seemed interested in continuing what they had going on, but then suddenly he enlisted in the military, and they didn’t really speak much while he was away. [ — Must be male born ‘01 or before. They had a budding relationship—nothing yet official—but things were looking, tentatively, promising. Perhaps your muse is hurt by him leaving so suddenly, or they could understand his hesitancy and fear around the relationship. During high school Hyunwoo had a girlfriend. They were friends first for a while, and though he sort of knew he didn’t like her like he should, he thought he could force himself into a relationship with someone he liked as a friend and be perfectly happy. This didn’t really work, as it was obvious to her that Hyunwoo wasn’t as into her as he tried to say he was. He never wanted to be intimate, and only reluctantly kissed, but was a good boyfriend nonetheless—good enough that the relationship went on for the best part of a year, until she couldn’t take it anymore and broke it off. [ — Your muse was friends with Hyunwoo during high school and they dated for a while, but since he never wanted to do much more than kiss, your muse got suspicious, and eventually broke things off. He was a good boyfriend though, always kind, attentive and thoughtful, he just never seemed to be romantically into your muse, so the breakup wasn’t awful, but was still not pleasant ]
Earlier this year, when Hyunwoo had just returned from military service and started his job as a lifeguard at the college sports center, your muse got into difficulty while in the pool one day. Whether they weren’t a strong swimmer, or just got a cramp at an inopportune moment, Hyunwoo had to drag your muse out of the pool and take them off to the nurses office to get checked over. He wouldn’t leave their side until they were given the all clear, and they’ve been friends ever since. He’s somewhat protective of them now, and isn’t keen on them going in the water, but playfully offered to give them swimming lessons so it doesn’t happen again. [ — Somehow your muse almost drowned, and Hyunwoo saved them. This helped form a strong friendship between the two of them, and Hyunwoo would now consider your muse a close friend (who he still wants to teach to swim—even if they say they already can) ]
Back in Busan, Hyunwoo was very close to a neighbour around his age, and always hung out with them after school and at weekends. But after his dad disappeared he didn’t come out to play as often, and rumours spread about his brothers behaviour. Your muses parents maybe didn’t want them involved with Hyunwoo anymore, out of fear that he might be the same as his brother.
