I want to try so many little hobbies. Candle making, soap making, basket weaving, wood carving, book binding, baking, weaving, I want to try them all.
I almost made a post about this the other day (unless i actually did and totally forgot) but there’s so many
I was going to make a list, but then i realized this is a good time to share this book
Making Stuff and Doing things is a whole collection of old punk DIY zines about making and doing just about anything, even things you probably never knew you wanted to do.
Book binding? In there.
Making bowls from old vinyl records? I made a whole ton for my brother’s grad party last year.
Basics of guitar? Making rubber stamps? Silk screening? Composting? Homemade beer, root beer, and wine? Soymilk?? Quill pens??? All in there.
Since it’s more punk, it doesn’t have a ton of the folksy, cottage vibes/hobbies, but it’s all about being resourceful and sustainable, which they both have in common.
If i ever need to do anything I’m not sure of, I double check this book to see if there’s anything in there. It’s one of the only books on diy I’ve ever needed.

What stood out with Moana 2 was a further exploration of Pacific culture. Two points especially stood out in highlighting the diversity within that vast expanse.
The first was when Moana came across a shard of pottery. That was most likely a reference to the Lapita, who were the ancestors of many Pacific Islander cultures. As they spread across the ocean, they brought pottery technology with them, refining techniques and intricate designs in the process. However as time progressed and the civilization expanded, pottery would get supplanted by weaving and carving technology, with some spots dropping it all together. So it was a good touch that Moana didn't even recognize the material, though she recognized that it was human-made.
The second was at the end when they meet other islanders. Especially the first ones who is clearly Melanesian, as opposed to our Polynesian main characters. That crew being Melanesian was shown not just in their dark skin but also their boat; that very distinctive crab claw sail and hull structure evoking the tepukei of the Solomon Islands.
I would love to know what cultures the other boats/envoys were supposed to represent.
Overall, it was great that they leaned more into Pacific Islander culture, and I hope that if more works are created, they will pursue this line further.

I already know one thing I'm going to enjoy when watching this movie, just watching Moana and her little sister being adorable together cause it's already working on me.
Having two little sisters myself- this seemed like a mother daughter relationship that Disney creators wanted to do but had to change for propriety sake. Like Skipper& Barbie
