House Doore messes around in the lab and there are dire consequences. Sand gets EVERYWHERE. Lady Splice is not having any clowning around.  You know what they say⌠âyou just canât go home againâ.  Some jerk makes a creepy return.
featuring: @ladyoftarth-postsâ @grammarsaveslivesâ @clothospindleâ @chickrenâ @fuegitaâ and @wontkinsâ our Game Narrator and artist of the above image
The ladies solved a couple mysteries by themselves: who poisoned Dranther (Cicero), and who made the high-pitched laugh when Lot killed the Shadow Assassin (Cicero again). In the past Iâve had to prod PCs towards answers, but they did it like a bunch of super sleuths. So I give them kudos for that. There are a couple things left unsolved (What was Cicero's plan? Who else knew about the cat-napping?), but clues havenât been given to figure that out yet. And that fits with the asoiaf setting; some things are just left a mystery.
Q: Did the PCs know they could die of Wounds?
A: I told them that was possible during the Chicky vs Ogre duel (around the 1 hour 14 min mark, 1 hr for the youtube version). Also they have access to the rulebook, so they can look up the rules at any time.
Q: What was Dranther poisoned with?
A: A new poison concocted by House Sithis, Cicero's original house. Somehow the antidote ended up being alcohol fumes. It's a fantasy setting, deal with it nerd.
More of my thoughts and corrections are sprinkled throughout the YouTube version.

I've been playing tabletop role-playing games (like Dungeons & Dragons) for over a decade. Most of the time players are only concerned with saving each other from danger. Often they don't even bother with that. Rarely do they concern themselves with Non-Player Characters. NPCs are faceless, disposable dispensors of loot, experience points, or quest info. Usually it's a struggle to even remember their name. In all my experience, as a player or Game Master, I've never seen what @chickren did in ep 7. Without hesitating she saved a castle full of NPCs even though it meant death for her party. And most people in Blackhorn are jerks (excluding Jonah)! But that didn't matter. Because (I infer) Chicky is playing her character as a True Knight, and it wasn't really choice for her at all. Chicky displayed dramatic role-playing in this briefest of moments, and she will get nothing but shit from her party for it. Meanwhile, no NPC was there to witness what went down. So nobody [that I control] can tell her they appreciate what she did. To the Moorsheads, the Doore ladies destroyed their expensive alchemy lab and murdered their pyromancer. I wish like hell that I could insert a NPC that knows what really happened so that I could express my admiration for her heroics (through the NPC's voice). But that won't happen. She's hated and feared by the people she saved. And she doesnt ask for recognition or glory in the future episodes. Reminds me of another knight who saved the population of King's Landing and never got credit for it. Just wanted to share that thought here, 'cause I couldn't think of a way to do so in-game.
The events at Castle Blackhorn alluded to in @closethedoorandcomehere âs RPG episode 7 actually âhappenedâ in that they occurred during a real-life session of Green Roninâs Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying by the players that comprise House Moorshead. Here is a link to an in-universe summary of these events if youâd like to read further. Several characters that have already been introduced are referenced, including Lady Iris, Lord Nic, Squire Jonah, and Cicero the Fool.
Wildfire Atronach pictured above. (Not my own art)
I'm not trying to kill the PCs. If I was, I would've hit âem with a shockwave from the wildfire explosion after the sand came down. I made sure, through Jonah, that they were forewarned about the danger of fighting in a lab full of wildfire. It was their choice to write off that warning as "a bunch of hocus pocus." I, as a the referee, always let the chips fall where they may.
Some quick notes on the game:
Q: Where is Lord Nic Doore during this whole thing?
A: In Port Meril being ransomed by Ironmen to his uncle Ser Merik.
Q: Where is Uncus?
A: Hiding in Castle Helmcrest, the seat of House Dannett. He knew the Doores would come for Finn and wanted to stay clear of that storm. He knew about the volatility of the Alchemy Lab and the risks of interrupting Valaera during an important ritual.
Q: What was the point of hunting a wildcat if it was impossible?
A: I try to facilitate unexpected PC choices to the best of my abilities. Unfortunately that means that the group may spend a lot of time following red herrings and doing things that don't make a whole lot of sense narratively. The alternative is called railroading. But it wasn't an impossible feat; they could've found a Shadowcat by using a Destiny Point. Also the roll would've been possible for a group that was strong in Survival or Awareness. I don't raise the limbo bar for my players. There's no fun without the possibility of failure and it wouldn't feel like Game of Thrones otherwise.
Q: Why did you have wolves show up right after saying you didn't want to waste time fighting them?
A: As a Game Master it's my job to keep up the game pacing and fun level. If I feel the listeners are getting bored during a long discussion then I'll do something to make the game continue. Also, you can't just stand around in the middle of the Westerosi wilderness at night making a lot of noise and expect nothing to happen, can you? It's canon that the Riverlands wilds are filled with wolves at this time.
Q: Why did Valaera steal Finn and then act like an asshole when they came for him?
A: She didn't steal him. She paid Uncus 150 gold dragons to find her a wild shadowcat. Since it's winter and it's almost impossible to find a shadowcat south of the Wall, Uncus had only one option: Finn. Uncus paid the same amount that the party paid to resurrect Finn, which seemed fair in his mind, and pocketed the remainder. Valaera didn't know Finn belonged to someone. When the group entered the lab in ep 6, the first thing Jonah said was inferred by Valaera that the shadowcat wasn't the same one the Doores had lost. To Valaera, this meant the Doores were opportunists. By the time she found out the truth, the ritual had already started. There are many resources that go into starting the ritual, such as Sorcerous Destiny Points and expensive material components. She couldn't stop performing it to explain that to them or else both cats would surely die (the ritual had a time limit). Interrupting the ritual imposed -1 dice penalty to Valaera's roll to perform the ritual. Without this penalty, Finn likely would've lived through it and only been temporarily weakened. The second interruption meant -2D to the ritual rolls. The additional penalties to the ritual meant success was improbable. This really pissed her off. Valaera was honestly one of the good guys (as far as anyone in GoT can be). If her familiar was killed by Chicky stopping the ritual, she would've lost her sorcery powers (she had the "Familiar" Drawback). Seeing Dranther as a literal part of herself, she defended herself from Chicky and the others.
And ask yourself, honestly, how would you feel if a bunch of weapon-toting armored strangers burst into your restricted-area-workspace that's filled with napalm-dynamite while you were in the middle of life and death surgery? Then they came back later and did the same thing again except now they're arguing about whether to kill you?
Q: Is Valaera a Targaryen?
A: She has valyrian features, as do many people from Volantis like her. She has ties to House Velaryon, who also share valyrian features.

Lady Iris Moorshead (Dannett). Art from SIFRP adventure Peril at Kingâs Landing. As a powerful schemer in the Game of Thrones, Iris retained control over the Dannett castle after marrying into House Moorshead, essentially ruling both houses. Fuegita did a great job role-playing her.
Other notes:
The guard named Taako is a reference to The Adventure Zone, a Dungeons & Dragons 5th ed real-play podcast.
In their Blackhorn guest room they missed a bloodstain under the carpet. And the furniture is all new to cover up recent murders that happened in the room (Irisâs little sister, Eilene Dannett, and Lord Nic Moorsheadâs half-brother, Kellin Moorshead). The group has a low Awareness, so thatâs why it wasnât found. But there was enough ill omens in Blackhorn to get the point across.
Art for a new character introduced in Close the Doore tRPG episode 6, played by a guest. Another Player Character will be introduced as well, so more art to come.
If Jonah fought Arya, Iâd put my money on Jonah.

Guys, Iâm friggunâ psyched that the ladies from House Doore are going to Castle Blackhorn. House Moorshead of Blackhorn was my trpg group in meat-space. So, hereâs an ominous teaser to share how jazzed I am. Blackhorn is a wretched hive of scum and villainy, the ladies must be cautious.
If youâd like to learn more before the next ep airs, you can read about House Moorshead here. You might end up knowing more than the players do about the tangled web of Blackhorn.

The Pink Wedding aftermath: Kendry the servant boy, youâre the worst character I ever improvised. For the record, there is Animal Handling (Charm), but Lot has Bonus Dice in Persuasion (Charm). Either way, Charming an animal doesnât help you identify a beastâs chase scene suitability. Que up Yakety Sax when the chase begins. Lot fires an arrow and the booze completely shuts down mah brain. Finn tanks and pulls aggro. DMâs lame in-joke: the Dothraki are named A (Abo), B (Biqui), and C (Ciquo). Letâs all ignore how Ser Chicky can carry a lance everywhere she goes.
If you kids donât settle down I will turn this cart around right now! Donât make me come back there and get Joffrey on your ass. Now thatâs just great, Look at what youâve done: youâve stressed out your destrier. After all she does for you! Iâll drive this cart into the Doom of Valyria! Next time Iâll leave you at home with your uncle Uncus to babysit you.
tl;dr: If an amateur artist didn't ask for critique, DONâT CRITICIZE THEM! If youâre an artist afraid of criticism, maybe think twice about posting that work publicly -- maybe spend a couple more hours (or even *gasp* days) working on it until youâre fully proud and confident. If you see some worthless, unsolicited, negative criticism on tumblr art, tell the Anon to go critique Wontkinsâ work instead. He asked for it. Or give the instigating artist something helpful and constructive to develop on.Â
I was drawn to the JB fandom because of how supportive it is. Thatâs a great thing and I donât want it to change. But what Iâm about to share might be controversial. Thatâs okay. Opinions are like assholes: everyoneâs got one and most of âem stink. Iâm going to be talking about visual art criticism because thatâs what Iâm more familiar with, but I think this applies to writing and any other creative field.
On tumblr I see more criticism of Anons than actual constructive criticism from Anons. Though itâs possible that my sample size is too small cuz Iâm semi-new, semi-casual to tumblr. On one hand itâs great that people shut down bullies. On the other, that isnât conducive for a constructive artistic environment.
Does this mean nobody should send criticism on tumblr? Should critique be saved for more suitable sites like wipnation, artstation, & deviantart? Maybe, IDK.
Hereâs what Iâve been hesitant to say: saying vague things like âIgnore that assholeâ and âJust keep practicingâ  is mediocre support if the artist is earnestly trying to improve. I like specific, detailed critique if Iâm to take myself seriously as an artist. [Blah, I sound pretentious when I read that back to myself.]
Some new artists are sensitive. Some art viewers are insensitive. This will never change. But if sincere critics are too afraid of backlash to even try, then I fear that the only critics remaining are the monstrous ones.
I want to state here, for the record, that I welcome all criticism on my work. My art, my tutorials, my skills as a Dungeon Master, itâs all up for critique. Thereâs no way you could be harsher on my work than I am. Thatâs how I improve -- in seeing what mistakes I make and trying not to repeat them. Now thatâs not a challenge for you to try to be as mean as possible, but itâs an invitation for sincere suggestions on technique.
Most valid criticism that I allow past the âbullshit wallâ is stuff I was already aware of but didnât yet admit out loud. While drawing or sculpting there are a hundred mistakes a minute, and the work is mostly parsing which mistakes to fix and what is âgood enoughâ. Having someone point out the glaring mistakes you left behind is a lesson on whatâs more noticeable by a general audience. And unfortunately, sometimes these numerous glaring mistakes pile up to make a piece (subjectively) absolute shit, especially for artists who donât do it for a living.
Somewhat contradictory, I do weigh critiques from their sources, usually sorted into two categories: general audience and fellow artists. As one would take film opinions from Quentin Tarantino more seriously than some rando from the YouTube comments section. But if itâs valid, even if it came from a faceless jerk, then it will stick in my subconscious the next time I'm arting a similar thing.
Several times in my career someone has pointed out something to me in a tactless way and my first response was âhey, fuck you very much!â But then days or even weeks later I found myself coming at a piece of artwork from a different technique because of that offending suggestion -- and the result is better. Just because an asshole said it in a offensive way doesnât mean sheâs automatically wrong. Ad hominem logical fallacy.
Yes, it takes practice to be able to separate useful feedback from general shitbashing. But if I want to improve then I put on my galoshes and wade into the muck. Ignoring all negative feedback on the whole makes me stagnant as an artist. But thatâs just me. If youâre comfortable over there in your own artist bubble then Iâm happy for you.
Iâm not usually one for long-winded posts, but this is something I keep thinking every time I open tumblr and see another drama pop up. Iâd rather receive criticism than be coddled. But take my words with a grain of salt. My advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.
We critique the fuck out of the Game of Thrones tv show. And many of us donât mince words while doing so. Why the big delineation between that and someone publicly posting their own fanart? Are David and Dan (and all the other thousands of people who work on the show) not human beings of flesh and blood that deserve respect and consideration for the years of effort they put in? Is there that big of a difference between publishing something on HBO than on tumblr? For both platforms, the creator is saying âHey world, look at this thing I made!â And then the world will give its opinion on it.
If youâre a casual artist then donât get offended if someone calls out your work as amateur. ...But if youâre a rando Anon, observe Wheatonâs Law; âDonât be a Dick.â
If youâre one of those people who has, in the past, tried to anonymously give criticism and then got a wallop of backlash by all the artistâs friends, then next time try something called a compliment sandwich to ease in your criticism-meat [heh]. Maybe they take it, maybe they donât. If your knowledgeable criticism was valid and directly actionable, then thatâs on them if they ignore it.
Whatâs an example of valid art critique?
âRob Liefeld, creator of Deadpool, sometimes draws feet too skinny and tiny.â
âBayonettaâs exaggerated proportions may cause a harmful body image to young female gamers.â
âJamie Hewlettâs Tank Girl art is a bit overly busy and nonsensical.â
âMike Mignola never draws pupils in his Hellboy comics.â
âAdam Warren draws noses as just tiny nostril lines in his Empowered comics.â
[hey, I enjoy all these things despite the cited criticisms, so donât think Iâm hating on âem.] Sometimes artists accept their weaknesses and it becomes part of their artstyle.
Whatever your criticism is, just please make it more substantial than âkeep goingâ or âstop altogether.â
ps I wanna link this post from my pal JBO, which is similar in topic.
