Dominic smiled. Brothers did have their uses, but right now, Frederic and Edgar were hellbent on ruining their own lives. āMine only like to cause me headaches." He laughed, but it rang hollow. They didnāt listen to reason or advice. He wanted the best for them, including marriages. Frederic wanted someone whoād lied to him about her family. Edgar wanted Genevive but was oblivious as to who she was, and still they painted Dominic as the monster.Ā
He mulled over Vitoriaās choice before deciding on them. Leather gloves would be better for the Irish climate, but they didnāt look as pretty as the others. Heād only ever shopped for his mothers, and even then heād known their tastes. There was still time to learn Leonoras. āI promise I am trying to get to know my future wife." He smiled. āBut we canāt all be as thoughtful as your husband. How is he? I've seen his brother in the House of Lords, but only occasionally?"Ā
Heād seen a successful, loving partnership in his mothersā marriage. Neither of them wanted to steal the shine from each other. They reminded him of the sun and moon. One more gentle than the other, and neither allowing their light to diminish the other's. When one set, the other rose, making room for each otherās light. āIād hope not,ā he said, blushing a little. āI want a true partnership. One where we can share the light equally.ā Leonora would be the sun to his moon. Both of them take turns carrying the burdens of the skies, trusting each other to keep darkness or reality and the burden of duty at bay. That was the hope at least.
āThat is quite brotherly of them. My youngest often caused us all a headache at least once a month.āYes, she could imagine that Frederic and Edgar caused him a great number of headaches. Had she misjudged Dominic in the same fashion she had misjudged his youngest brother? Nothing about him made her believe he wasnāt being truthful in their conversation. Perhaps he wasnāt telling her the full story, but Vitoria could not fault him in that. She had told no one but Nathaniel the entire truth of her. Hiding some truths from the world was how one survived at court.
At the mention of Nathaniel she could not help the way her smile dimpled as it took over her face once more. Let the world call her lovestruck, she did not mind the slightest. āHe has been well, as has Nicholas. The estate keeps them both busy, I suspect that is why Nicholas are not often in Parliament. Their young sister is also off age to debut, we will have to start thinking of matches as well.ā
Not that they had much dowry to offer, with all of Vitoriaās past locked away. Perhaps she could muster her courage should Nita find someone she wished to marry. Though what a horrid thing to reappear from the grave only to beg for what was rightfully hers. No, she did not know if she could do such a thing to her family. They deserved better of her homecoming.
āI hope that you can become that for each other. It is a good thing to go into a marriage with such a wish. It will put you on equal footing. It is hard to begrudge someone who wishes partnership rather than servitude.ā
