do you ever think about remus lupin in the prisoner of azkaban? how it was like for him to see harry? harry who could’ve known him as uncle moony if his best friends hadn’t died? instead of professor lupin? because god fucking knows he isn’t supposed to be professor lupin. being james’s best friend and lily’s best friend and fighting with them in the order knowing that they could die? he should have been uncle moony.
imagine him waking up in the compartment on september first and seeing james. almost forgetting. almost forgetting that they were deadgonedead and everything has changed. waking up after a nap to see james screwing around with sirius and peter. except now sirius was a traitor and peter was dead. and it isn’t james sitting in front of him in the compartment. it’s his son. lily’s son. harry. he would know those green eyes anywhere. green eyes that were warm, just like lily evans was. before she was cold. a hero, true, but ten feet below the ground and cold.
harry regards him like a stranger. a professor. except he isn’t. he made gum stick to that hair just for laughs with sirius. he looked at those eyes for hours, discussing shakespeare instead of doing prefect patrols. he watched the boy with the unruly hair and the girl with the bright eyes fall in love. he also watched their house that was in ruins, the morning that they died. so remus regards the boy with warmth, as he would if he was uncle moony. but he’s professor lupin so he doesn’t say any much more.
he sees the marauders map in the hands of james’s son and he remembers. he remembers moony, wormtail, padfoot and prongs. before the war, when they were rowdy gryffindors who think they had the world at their feet. the map was a stroke of genius, and leaving it in the castle was a mutual decision they had come upon. it was their legacy. and it’s so right, yet somehow so wrong that the legacy has landed in james’s son’s hands and he doesn’t even know. it’s ironic how harry doesn’t know his dad had poured his soul into this old piece of parchment. harry doesn’t know his parents, save for the fact that they were heroes. harry doesn’t know uncle moony. and that’s not how it should have been.
